Very clean and light, a nice comfy couch and quite a pleasant outlook from a small deck Room enough for two people.

Unfortunately, the deck was not shaded from the sun or rain. At the time of booking I didn’t realise that there were no kitchen facilities apart from a jug, toaster and microwave. It seemed rather unhygienic to be washing cups and breakfast bowls in the bathroom sink, which was also very small. Being 6km out of town, It would be better to book one the bigger, more expensive units with a proper kitchen so you could cook a meal, rather than drive into town each night for dinner.

Franz Josef was hands down one of our favourite stops. The Franz Alpine Retreat is a 2 minute drive from the town. It is quiet and peaceful with lovely views of the mountains in all directions. The hosts were very helpful and polite, they also provide a ton of information regarding what to do/ eat in the area.The room was perfect with many heating options in winter, they also had a laundry facility that we were grateful for. Very good value for money. Definitely recommend as the place to stay in Franz Josef.

Everything was clean and comfortable. Good location but not best location (best location would be directly in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier). Nonetheless it’s only a few minutes away but you need a vehicle. Quiet for a motel. Private entrance : you don’t have to pass in front of other rooms when you enter your room. Microwave and others to fix your own food and breakfast. I would definitely come back.

Not practical if you need to do your own dishes. I only stayed one night so not a real problem for me. Sofa was way too soft and kind of uncomfortable. Decoration is a bit sterile (but that’s personal)

Really comfortable unit which suited us perfectly for 3 nights. It was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The site manager was lovely and friendly and helped me when I couldn't work out the TV. We really enjoyed our stay. The helicopter flight over the glaciers was definitely a highlight.

Tiny little black midges kept biting me but that wasn't the fault of Franz Josef Retreat!

This was a lovely little cabin around 2km outside Franz Josef. It was clean, well decorated and had most of the facilities I needed. I loved the fact that it had a separate living room and bedroom. It also had a seating area both inside and outside the property.

The only sink for washing dishes was the bathroom sink which is way too small to wash dishes properly. I also had to wait for a long time for someone to appear at reception to check me in.

This was a lovely spot to stay out of main town, 5 min drive in. Cabin was small, but thats all we needed, bed was super comfortable although bathroom was small shower not bad size. Seperate lounge with comfy 2. 5 seater and small dining table. Coffee/tea making facilities with small fridge/microwave. Lovely to see mist low on ground in morning and stars at night. Parking at door. Good deal. Was perfect for base camp. Lovely quite spot.

We were there in a quiet and rainy time and we're very comfortable and cozy. Nice modern space, with a lovely open view through the sliders. Blooming lupin outside the door.

With curtains open you have light and view, but not much privacy. This was not a big issue for us. We preferred the view. The kitchenette is adequate, but dishes need to be done in the small bathroom sink. The bathroom has no shelving , counter space or hooks for towels. But is new clean and functional and has a nice shower.

The cabins were exactly what we expected..Modern cabin perfect for an overnight stay. Room comfortable without being large and perfectly adequate.

No air conditioner unit, fan was provided. No sink other than the one in the bathroom, so we weren't able to wash out the glasses. We knew this from reviews. Also the fridge freezer ice compartment had frosted so it was difficult to open. Obviously other people had same issue as the lid to shut the compartment was broken. It still worked. For a 1 night stay ideal

Beautiful location, nice and quiet, still accessible to Franz Josef by car for dinner. The room was fantastic. Bed was big and comfortable, nice bathroom and a lovely separate living room with little kitchenette. Nice bathroom products provided, great shower with plenty of hot water. Also a nice premium plunger coffee provided.

They did forget to replenish our milk for the second day and office didn’t open till 9am, so we had to have black coffee.

The apartment is very clean, all the appliances are good quality, the kitchen have all the necessary utensils and I love that it has the pull down faucet for the sink! The TV in the room is around 55 inch, which is bigger than most places.

It doesn't have AC/cooling, which is probably understandable for the location, but it can get quite hot from the afternoon sun in the summer, maybe provide a fan. Location is still 5km away from town centre (5 min drive).
