Best part of our trip so far. We booked a twin room with a private bath on the balcony and we used it to it's full potential! the rooms are full tatami with shoji screens - really brought us the feeling of being in a traditional ryokan as we have seen on TV. The room was incredibly spacious, the bathtub fit 2 people without problems and the balcony had 2 chairs and a table for enjoyable evenings/mornings. The possibility to borrow yukatas for the duration of the stay - free of charge - was a highlight. The private onsens were amazing as well, but we did use our private onsen more :) The staff was incredibly professional and polite. the room had good soundproofing. We ordered 1 dinner - kaiseki which consisted of 7 courses - each item was chosen by the chef with us having the option of choosing between 2-3 options. We ordered clam pot - which had only 1 clam which was a bit dissapointing. the free drinks (non-alcoholic as well as alcoholic) provided by the onsen were our highlight as well. We celebrated our honeymoon and the staff suprised us with a small gift, which made the stay even better. Cannot recommend this stay enough.

This has to be the best hotel I ever stayed in my life. The place was beautiful, super traditional and private. The staff was so kind and helpful, the room was very big, with so many ammeneties and possibilities. The private onsen was a big plus and totally worth the price, since it's only for you, but you still get the view of the nature around the hotel but no one sees you, it's totally private. Really regret not staying an extra night.

It was not bad, but this is just a suggestion. Me and my partner are not big breakfast people, we usually just drink something and eat a piece a fruit, but the hotel makes you choose between japanese or western breakfast. The issue for us it's that the breakfast is so big, they bring it to your table, but the amount of food for one person, could feed 3. We felt really bad because we could only eat a quarter of it and it was a lot of food waste. I feel like it would be better if guest could pick some items, instead of bringing everything to the table.

Suiun was an absolutely incredible experience. I can speak some Japanese but they also had staff who could speak in English to assist us. There were a lot of free inclusions to our stay: a yukata to wear in the hotel, multiple drink and snack bars, and free late night ramen. Our room was so clean, spacious, and beautiful—we enjoyed having a private open-air onsen bathtub to ourselves too. Their multi-course breakfast and dinner meals were so delicious and filling. We enjoyed their onsens so much: there are three private ones and one public one, all of which were very traditional in design. Suiun met all of our needs and went above and beyond. I want to come back here on a regular basis. It is only a 7 minute from Gora station.

The views were amazing and the room is just beautiful. We enjoyed the private onsen and the onsen on the balcony. The stay was super comfortable and we enjoyed the free drinks and snacks. The staff was very welcoming also.

Unfortunately my husband got a bad spell of psoriasis after the onsen as we did not know this could be an issue. Not the hotels fault but something to be aware off. I got extremely itchy feet afterwards. The breakfast and dinner that was offered was very pricy so we skipped it. You have to drive a bit to find good restaurants nearby as we didn’t have reservations.

The Ryokan is in the Gora area of Hakone and has a lot of attractions nearby. The hotels staff was very friendly and professional. This was probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. I enjoyed the bath on the deck as well as the Ryokan's hot springs and private baths. The dinner has been the best meal I have had on my trip and I am glad I included it on my booking. The next time I come back to Japan, I want to come back here for a longer visit.

The Ryokan was perfect, I wish I had booked a longer stay.

Really-really nice staff and personnel, big thanks to them! I have tried breakfast and dinner included option - really good experience. High quality food, lots of fish, sukiyaki, sashimi, great desserts. There is a choice between traditional japanese and western-style breakfast (not dinner). During dinner\breakfast there are some options which you can choose - 3-4 dishes from all (~ 10 in the course). Be careful, do not eat much before dinner \ breakfast :) - there are very much food. Location - not so far from Tokyo ~ 2 hours by train with transfers. Nice trip by train Hakone-Yumoto Station with audio "tour" during usual scheduled train. Nice views, Hakone open-air museum 20 min walk (must-have for visit). Near Gora station ( 5 min walk) - cable-railway to Owakudani and to lake Ashi. Room: great and big rooms, you can select yukata to wear, everything like water \ beer \ snacks \ tea \ others - free, available whole day at separate room near elevator (or inside your room). Onsen - I have tried onsen in the room - nice, bath is in open-air room (balcony). Water can be super-hot, be carefull, there is additional water tap with cold water. Private onsens are also good (big wood bath, big stone bath and bath with stones) - almost anytime one of them was free (beginning of November). Public onsen - has also sauna, but onsen size is similar to private onsen. Great garden near entrance with carps.

Pricy for 2 nights :( May be there are similar places with good enough service and private onsens in Hakone with less price. BTW, regarding breakfast - there is a choice between traditional japanese and western-style: but even in western style there are a lot of fish \ parts from japanese-style food.

Staying at this ryokan was truly the realization of a long-held dream. From the moment I arrived, I felt warmly welcomed. Check-in included a lovely snack and tea that set the tone for the rest of my stay. The highlight was undoubtedly the private outdoor bath attached to my room, offering a serene and immersive onsen experience in complete privacy. In addition, the ryokan features three reservable private baths (first-come, first-served) and a beautifully maintained communal bathhouse, giving plenty of options to relax and unwind. The food was exceptional. The multi-course kaiseki dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast were both delicious and beautifully presented. I appreciated how the menu shifted with seasonal ingredients, showcasing the chef’s attention to detail and freshness. Glad I decided to opt into meals. Another wonderful touch was the generous selection of snacks and drinks available throughout the ryokan, including alcohol. There was a convenient snack room on my floor, as well as a more extensive lounge in the basement. Spa treatments were also available, adding to the luxurious and restorative feel of the stay. This ryokan was clean and truly captured everything I hoped for in a traditional Japanese inn with hospitality, tranquility, and a deep connection to nature and culture. I wouldn’t hesitate to return. There is also a cable car that goes from Hakone Yumoto station to Gora station, and from there, it is three minute walk to the ryokan. It won’t show up on your Google maps so hot tip.

Some former guests complained about the steep incline up to the ryokan. It might be a bit difficult for those with mobility issues.

My husband and I had the best weekend stay 5/24/25-5/26/2025 at Suiun during his first trip to Japan!! We stayed a few days in Tokyo and wanted to experience a calmer setting hence going to Hakone! This ryokan and the staff were amazing, always so polite and respectful! We especially wanted to give a shout out to Monami who was our waitress for multiple meals, she was so sweet and friendly! We loved chatting with her and she was so welcoming. Her english was fantastic and again her level of service was awesome! Definitely one of the reasons we will recommend this to our friends coming back to Japan. The private bath with the mountain view was also spectacular and we were able to relax every night, another highlight were the meals - such elaborate and well curated sets for breakfast and dinner. We truly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning!

Wished they did have more snack options!

Great staff - super friendly, helpful, providing additional service (complimentary matcha making experience) Great bottomless drinks - draft beer, spirits & snacks all complimentary in the basement bar Great hot springs baths - 3 types of baths located in Japanese garden, private hinoki bath in each room Great room - very spacious, traditional Japanese room, super clean, great bed, complimentary toiletries, pajamas Food - good kaiseki course & breakfast, a great quantity of dishes provided (very filling)

Food - little bit below expectation quality-wise (especially on seafood menus). Could tell the ingredients were a bit processed/ de-frosted.

This is a great hotel for those who want a real Japanese feel to their stay. From the moment we arrived (shoes off please) we were warmly greeted, offered a kimono to wear and shown to your authentic Japanese ryokan-style bedroom with its own private onsen. The well-equipped room was supplied with beer and water as well as tea and real-coffee beans and a grinder. At 10pm free ramen was available in the lounge where you could also help yourself to draft beer, coffee, tea etc. The breakfast was outstanding for those who want to try new foods, whether you opted for the Japanese breakfast menu or the western one. Tip - allow extra time in your schedule in order to savour the many courses offered. If you didn’t want the elaborate menu a range of bread/croissant/pastries were available too. The hotel has larger onsen for use by its guests - one for men, one for women and three smaller ones which can be booked (if it’s not in use you can use it). We chose to use the onsen ion the balcony of our room (for which there was a small but unexpected charge ) Thoroughly recommend this hotel if you are exploring the area, planning on using the Hakone Ropeway (cable car) to the lake for (if you are lucky!) views of Mt Fuji. Another great attraction is the open air art museum (15 min walk or 1 stop on rail) with a wide range of sculptures, a Picasso exhibition and lots to interest the children too.
