Warm panelled, stately, classy hotel that must be the best on the island. Situated above the surrounding properties for a commanding view of the sea from all east facing rooms. Lovely bar/lounge area full of chesterfield sofas and chairs well spaced out in a warm and inviting space. If you stay here you MUST visit Mount Stuart! https://www.mountstuart.com/ its about the best stately home I've ever seen (including several palaces).
O.K. It's not a modern hotel, so in places it appears a little shabby, but it's shabby-chic not dilapidated. Don't be late down for breakfast as replenishment of the buffet slows toward the end (I did ask and get freshly cooked).

Spacious room( we had the superior twin room with sea view). Glad we paid that wee bit extra for the beautiful views from the large windows. Comfortable beds, tasteful, sympathetic furnishings and decor. Any staff we met were friendly and helpful. Friendly, gentle wee seagull woke us each morning with a tap on the window.
Just one thing -carpets could do with some attention. Staining from drips of tea on the bedroom carpet, and lounge area carpet on ground floor needs cleaning in high traffic areas.

Breakfast was well worth the money. Beds very comfy, good shower. The staff that we came into contact with were nice. It's an old hotel so expect creaking floor and noisy doors. Plenty of character to this lovely old building. My room view was a tree, a very nice tree but still a tree 😆, so can't comment on room view. View from the road is magnificent. Just wish we were young enough to gambole down the grass slopes lol.
I did mention to reception on checkout, that a sign by the steps at the front telling you there was a back entrance without steps, would have made my husbands carrying of 2 suitcases alot easier on him. However, the customers on the terrace and myself did.have a giggle.

We had a family room in this hotel - great views of the sea from the window, absolutely beautiful. We found the beds to be really comfy, the room was big and spacious, the facilities all working well with hot shower and big bath. The staff were lovely, the hotel is beautiful and we had a great stay, finding it really good value for money. The sheets and furniture felt good quality. It was very quiet and we all had a good sleep.
We read the reviews about the hotel being 'tired' although our room was perfect for us. It looked like the hallways were being renovated and updated and we hope the hotel retains its olde worlde charm. It was a five to ten minute walk along the seafront into Rothesay, fine for us but worth being aware of. Taxi company recommended by the hotel were great.

Beautiful big hotel that has been well maintained in most places and areas. The building is really beautiful and the location is excellent - only a few minutes’ walk from Rothesay ferry port. I was travelling with my dog who was made to feel very welcome! The hotel is very clean - I can’t fault the cleanliness at all. Our bathroom was quite dated, but it was clean and had everything we needed. Considering the price of the rooms, I feel we still got excellent value for money. The beds were very comfortable and the room was spacious and well equipped. We had dinner in the hotel twice. The food in the restaurant was very nice - more like what you’d expect in a 4* hotel, and again it was no issue to eat in the bar area and have the dog with us. We didn’t include breakfast when booking but did pay the £15 to have it each day. This is mainly suited to those looking for a traditional Scottish style breakfast rather than continental but if that is what you would like, it is also good value.
Very little - the stay was really nice and I liked this hotel a lot. A few minor things that could make it even better - The restaurant/bar area could do with some music and it would have been nice to have a small fridge in the bedroom when the weather is so hot.

Excellent staff, excellent evening meals and the hottest buffet breakfast I’ve ever had! All the bain-maries had gas burners under them so everything was piping hot, yaaaaay! Nice selection of food in a lovely breakfast room with conservatory extension. Stunning views over the bay below from our bedroom window and powerful, hot shower in the bathroom. Would recommend this hotel and would definitely go back.
Shortage of parking spaces at the front of the hotel. No ramp to pull wheeled suitcases up (lots of steps). Bar not open while we waited to check-in. In the bathroom, the shower has a curtain where a glass screen would totally elevate the look and feel of the bathroom, also much more hygienic. Mostly minor but a great hotel overall.

Loved the setting. The team at the hotel was friendly, engaging, and really keen to ensure my stay was a great experience. I loved the fact that the hotel is investing in employing young people. Barry, the manager of the restaurant and bar area, was brilliant and passionate about his work and the hotel. Keen to engage with the clientele and to bring his team on. I loved the quirkiness of the hotels history. The food was good quality and of a good standard. Views from the sea view rooms, fabulous.
No mattress or pillow protectors. Not how a hotel should be maintaining its rooms in this day and age.

The hotel has fabulous views over Rothesay and The Kyles of Bute. It was very comfortable, it is not a new building, however we are delighted that the current owners are spending money on it and refurbishment is ongoing. It has an old fashioned charm about it. Beautiful wood panelling in lounge and dining room areas. The quality of the food at breakfast and dinner was very good. Plenty of choice. Our beds were very comfortable, nice bedding and quality towels. lots of hot water and heating in room when required. The staff were very polite and helpful, in all areas.
Perhaps more parking places might have been helpful, although we got a space any time we needed one, however, considering where the hotel sits, we understand the parking area situation. There are plenty of streets around in which to park, if required.

Staff are all very friendly, happy and helpful. The food is excellent, both the breakfast buffet and the dinner we had was great. The building itself is stunning, grand and full of atmosphere as well as a stunning view out the front. Very high ceiling in our room felt nice and airy. It really is a stunning building with phenomenal staff and would be an absolute shame if the issues with the room and updating some bits that needed it weren't done, and it fell to a worse state.
Bits of our room felt rundown. The bathroom especially, the shower head needed upgrading and the extractor fan didn't work. The skirting board had quite a bit of dust on it. The door to the room had an inch of space at the bottom you could see right through and hear everything clearly outside, so presumably anyone walking past could easily hear everything in our room.

Lovely old hotel, comfortable room with great views across the bay, great lounge and outside area to relax, order a drink, or have a meal. Good food, reasonably priced. Friendly service and staff that don't get in your way. Excellent location and a short walk into town.
Nothing. The hotel met all my expectations. Could things be better? Yes, this is a three star 'grand old dame' and some things could be upgraded. I would have loved a better shower and not the 80's style shower in the bath, for example. But, I realise that if everything was to be upgraded the hotel would move out of my price range and tbh I'd rather go back again and enjoy it as it is!
