I loved this hotel. I used it back in April, so booked it again because of the room, cleanliness, service etc. The hotel is a beautiful old building, and it has been very sympathetically updated, not too 21st century! It is situated directly across from the Western Ferries port. The rooms are clean and well looked after. I had requested the same one as in my previous visit, which I was happily granted and my friends were in various other configured rooms. The views of the sea were beautiful. Everyone was very impressed with the overall hotel, cleanliness, service, staff, views etc. The cooked breakfast was beautiful, but we only managed dien for it the first day as we were there for Doon The Watter Revival and were shattered come day 2. I am allergic to cows milk, so I asked if they had any oatmilk. Unfortunately, they didn't, but Richard, the manager, said if I'd mentioned that on booking, they would have got some in for sure. I had taken some with me and just went to the room to get it. I can't hold that against them because they did everything they could to please. They were even happy to keep the bar open and keep serving us on the last night when we came back. My companions have said they will be using this hotel time and time again when in Dunoon, as will I.
I had no issues, but if I had to make a suggestion, it would be to have breakfast on for another hour. We're on a break, so with having very late nights, we would've loved to have had breakfast, but couldn't get up so early. 🤣

The Royal Marine has been in operation for about 165 years and is almost like a step back in time to when British and European aristocracy, including royalty, stayed there. The staff were friendly and did everything they could to make us feel welcome. Although there are areas that look a little worse for wear, the entire place was spotlessly clean. The view of the Firth of Clyde, where it meets the Holy Loch at Hunters Quay, is magnificent. We agreed that the bed was the most comfortable one in any of the hotels where we stayed during our 10-day visit to Scotland.
My comments must be considered in view of the fact that we visited after to tourist season, when there were very few other guests. The hotel is not what it once was, even when I used to stay there 40 years ago. There is no longer a restaurant on site (although the manager secured a reservation for us at a very good local restaurant), and they were not serving breakfast. I mention these points only to alert potential guests, so they are not disappointed. On balance, these little inconveniences did not detract significantly from our enjoyment of the Royal Marine.

The hotel itself is a bit dated and in need of tlc, having said that, it IS an old, old building. Free parking on the grounds is plentiful. It is directly across from the car ferry port. On arrival, I was greeted by Pam, she was really so lovely, friendly and helpful. The hotel wasn't busy so she had upgraded my room to a far bigger room with a beautiful view of the sea. Pam was so efficient, and couldn't do enough to make my stay as comfortable a she could. I was there to escape for a few days of 'me time' after the most stressful start to the year for me. My room was spotless, the bathroom was huge and there was a beautiful big roll-top bath as well as a separate shower cubicle. My bed (a very long 4 poster)was comfortable and again very clean. There was also a corner sofa facing the TV which had Netflix and plenty of other channels to watch at night. The hotel was so quiet with a beautiful setting. One thing to look out for is that although it says on this site that there is no breakfast option, there actually is and it's very nice too, so maybe contact the hotel direct for that. Many thanks to Pam for her communication before my arrival, she got back to me really fast. I will return.
The only thing that was lacking was a couple of maintenance problems e.g missing secondary glazing in the bathroom which made it very draughty. This didn't affect my stay.

I loved the sea view room, very Victorian style with a mix of class, big bath tub. Staff (Dillon) was so lovely, chatted away couldn’t have been any more helpful. Other staff were also very nice and could not do enough.
The atmosphere in the building is very good, but hotel with beautiful views of the water. I loved the bath tub. I loved the view from the room, my sister was in another room at back and her room was super comfy, clean, modern. Excellent value for money and we were not rushed to Check out. The walks around the hotel and also lovely. Dog loved watching the people walk past and the boats leave and come back.

The Seaview room we were upgraded to for no extra charge had amazing views of the Clyde and the surrounding hills . Four poster bed was unique and added to the ambience of this beautiful building The roll top Bath was an added bonus 👌 The room was clean and had plenty of furniture including a huge wardrobe corner sofa coffee table and a TV. Didn't turn it on, presumably it works 🤷🏼
The bar was clean , unfortunately not very well staffed and opening hours seemed to be ad hoc. No draught beers at all 🤔 pumps there just no beer . The restaurant is only open for breakfast which was a shame . The hotel was generally clean but a hoover on some of the carpets , especially the staircase wouldn't have been untimely. A late November stay could explain a few of these things . Overall we enjoyed our short stay of two nights and would probably book again .

Beautiful building and I was blown away by the stainglass windows inside. Room had everything we needed, plenty of towels, loo rolls and lots of tea and coffee making facilities. Our room was quite basic compared to the pictures I'd seen of rooms on booking.com but it was very clean and comfortable still. Unfortunately the restaurant wasn't serving food for dinner but we were able to get a takeout to our room and the staff in the hotel provided plates and cutlery for us, which was really kind and helpful. All the staff were really welcoming and just seemed genuinely happy friendly people which made us feel very comfortable.

Although the new owners have a long way to go on the room/hotel refurbishments at the time of our visit, we can definitely see what they are looking to achieve. The owners and staff were always welcoming and attentive to our needs. My family and I look forward to staying again and seeing their progression on our next visit to Dunoon. We are looking forward to the VIP treatment they gave us on our recent visit again.
Sadly as visiting friends in the town we didn’t use all the facilities but the owners was at the very early stages of reviving this tired yet beautiful Building. I gave my honest outsider thoughts which was very well received by the new owners as constructive.

Beautiful room with very traditional Scottish vibes. The building itself is gorgeous, and conveniently situated right next to the ferry terminal. The bar staff were incredibly friendly and all employees were very helpful.
The room I was in was clearly newly refurbished, and the bathroom still seemed a little basic. The room was leaking a little too, not a lot, just a little drip in the corner of my room - no trouble to me but it was a little off-putting.

The room (24) was a large family room with a double bed and 2 single beds. The view was superb overlooking the ferry terminal and very entertaining for our 5 year old. Who knew 20 cars plus 2 big lorries could all fit on fine. There was no noise either due to the secondary glazing on the room’s windows. The staff couldn’t be more helpful and welcoming. Breakfast was great. Highly recommend.
