We stayed here as part of our NC500 route and found it to be a great stopover. The location is convenient, though our first room faced the main road and was a bit noisy. However, the staff were happy to move us to a quieter room at the back with no fuss, which we really appreciated. The bed was comfortable, the blackout curtains were a nice touch, and the room was peaceful for a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was tasty, and we especially enjoyed chatting with the lovely lady who served it. All the staff we encountered were super friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

No car park. Bathrooms need updating and toilet not clean.

Food was generally very good, and decent value. Lovely atmosphere/ambience in the main hotel

Pastries put out at Monday morning breakfast were the very same ones from Sunday Breakfast, so were stale. Room 1: Room could have been cleaner (tissues under bedside table etc) Bath tap/mixer unit dripped constantly. Bath/shower selector did not work properly. Bath was chipped and rusting. Lamp shade was "yellowing" Hotel generally in need of a refresh/decorate. £500 per room would transform it! Attached bar was a bit spartan, but this is possibly just the scottish way.

Good location and pleasant room on the second floor looking out over Thurso. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. Breakfast was adequate.

It’s an old style hotel along with a lot of darker stained wood panels so makes is generally feel darker and historical, when compared to modern hotels. Doesn’t really matter as the quality of the stay was more important than the decor though some of the breakfast tables were showing their age. Arrival at the hotel reception in the early evening was a bit unwelcoming though the limited contact with staff I did have was ok .

The breakfast was nice and the location of the hotel was great to get to our return ferry to orkney

The bedroom we had was a superior room it was nice but the bathroom let it down due to the bin being un emptied and full of sanitary products and dirty tissues, also the extractor fan was so dirty with thick black dust and the chrome pole which supported the shower curtain had black marks most of the way across it when in the bath and relaxing then looking up at the rail and extractor fan it was so disappointing, the bathroom certainly wasn't up to the standard of a superior room ,The bedroom was lovely.

My recent stay at Pentland Hotel provided a generally comfortable experience, with notable strengths in room quality and connectivity, though there were some areas for improvement, particularly with the buffet breakfast. The hotel room was well-maintained and offered a comfortable setting for the duration of my stay. The bed was cozy, with high-quality linens and pillows that allowed for a restful night’s sleep. The room featured modern amenities, including a flat-screen TV, and a spacious work desk. One of the highlights of my stay was the hotel’s Wi-Fi, which was fast, reliable, and accessible throughout the property. It allowed me to work efficiently. Connectivity was a crucial aspect of my stay.

The buffet breakfast, while convenient, was a bit underwhelming. The variety of options was somewhat limited compared to other hotels in the same price range. The selection included typical breakfast staples such as scrambled eggs, sausages, toast, pastries, and fruit, but nothing stood out as exceptional. The hot items were average in taste and quality, and the pastries, though fresh, were not as flavourful as I had hoped. The coffee, however, was decent and provided a good start to the day. Overall, the breakfast was adequate but did not offer a particularly memorable experience.

Easy to find, plenty of on road parking. Room of a good size came with dog blanket, bowl and towel. A good selection of refreshments in the room

Dog friendly? Really, the staff yes. we knew what we were coming to but to expect dog owners to either put the dog in the car (weather could be an issue) or to eat in the reception area does not constitute dog friendly imho. Breakfast staff were the reason I marked down staff, 2 young lads forgive me but useless, unable/unwilling to speak, but visitors shouldn't have to go hunting tables to get cups, plates, cutlery or clear a space for them to sit. There were after all only 6 tables in use at the time we went in all uncleared and bad practice.

The booking in was quick and easy. The receptionist was very welcoming and helpful. Loved the original features of the building. Really appreciate seeing how the other half used to live back in the day. My room was on the second floor. Very easy to find due to the signage. It was a single bed with shower over bath. The usual customary shower and hand gels, Also a hairdryer tucked away in a drawer.

Not so much a dislike, more a maintenance thing. The window in the bathroom opened but nothing to keep it open. and It dropped very heavily. Wouldn't like to get your fingers in the way. The bedroom window jam open but you had to rock it to close it. The door squeaked when opening or closing it and most importantly lol,,, the tv remote didn't work .

Clean and tidy rooms. Pleasant staff. Decor is a little dated but everything worked and the room was very comfortable. I would not hesitate to book again. The food was also very good - excellent evening meal and breakfast.

As noted above, it is dated and a bit tired looking. For example, there is lots of dark wood rather than the lighter, brighter colours you get in more modern hotels. But on balance I don’t think this really matters - comfort and service are more important and the Pentland scores highly on both.

Staff- so helpful. I left an item behind me and they organized postage for me with no fuss !! Bar staff were so helpful and recommended things to us :) Very friendly welcome :) Great location.

They did appear to be a little understaffed for breakfast - there was a bus tour staying in the hotel so I think that put them under some pressure - but they were very apologetic and explained this to us.

I loved my stay here though it was only for one night, check in was easy even though I didn’t arrive until 19.00, I was offered the opportunity to dine in the restaurant and it was carvery night, the food was plentiful and varied, I opted for the gammon which was delicious. My room was a standard double with en-suite, it overlooked the garden at the side and was very quiet. The bed was comfortable, linen was crisp and clean. Nice hospitality tray. The TV was great easy to work even for me who doesn’t watch much tv and certainly not on a modern one like this one. Bathroom was great, lovely fluffy towels and nice toiletries. I was intrigued to see there is a library in the hotel, on this occasion I didn’t have time to check it out having arrived late and leaving early the next day. Breakfast was excellent, again plenty of choice, the cooked breakfast was very high quality, being fussy about sausages I can honestly say these were very good indeed. The location is excellent, not far from all amenities and ideal for onward travel being situated near rail and bus connections. I understand there are no on site parking facilities but this wasn’t relevant to me as I was travelling onwards by train, breakfast is available anytime from 06.30 onwards. The best thing about this hotel was the staff, they couldn’t have been more helpful, efficient or cheerful.

There was nothing I disliked.
