We had a pleasant stay. Parking was a bonus in the centre of town.
Not the hotel's fault, but Colchester's traffic system is a nightmare for a visitor. You can only get to the hotel via a restricted traffic zone from the top of the road. To do this you go through a sign that says buses and access only. We read that as deliveries, police, ambulances etc. But you can go through it!

Excellent central location for walking around Colchester. Parking on site was perfect for us although the entrance would not have been comfortable for a larger car.
We were misinformed by Booking.com that in order to obtain a room with en suite facilities we needed to upgrade. The upgrade misinformed the hotel that we wanted a twin bedded room. On arrival we found that all rooms were en suite (so we had unnecessarily paid for the upgrade) and we didn't want a twin bedded room. The manager quickly sorted out the problem for us and was extremely helpful in making sure we had a very nice room and stay.

From the excellent location, good parking, friendly welcome, and comfortable room, i would rate this little gem of an hotel as superb. The bed was very comfortable and the room very clean. I particularly liked the bathroom with the rain shower. Breakfast was the best continental I've ever had. The choice and quality was to die for. I wish I could have stayed longer to enjoy it all. Very good coffee as well, not something you usually find in hotels these days.
The outside of the hotel could do with a tidy up. I found the fake blossoming trees a bit quirky, especially the plastic flowers scattered all over the ground. A bit of updating wouldn't go amiss. The rear entrance could do with a good clean-up as it didn't do the hotel any justice.

Booked last minute due to being in location, didn’t not expect much but surprisingly overwhelmed. My firm usually pre books hotel chain, which I refuse to accept. The owner was so welcoming, as the restaurant was closed he gave an excellent recommendation for a local ”non chain” Italian, which was also fantastic. In the morning there was the most overwhelming continental breakfast I have ever tasted. Amazing feast of fresh fruit, cold meats, fresh breads & cheese etc. You would never expect this in a small hotel in February. Didn’t get the opportunity to test the the “egg scrambler”, looked interesting 😀 Hotels chains who package sub standard breakfasts could learn a lot! I’ll not mention any brands, I travel a lot and refuse to to stay at the branded motels, one should support local hospitality. Any other plus - tea (or coffee) was delivered personally in a tea pot with fresh milk, no nonsense using machines in the morning, personal service - so much appreciated - and great Orange juice, not the diluted version. If I’m ever in Colchester again this would be a first choose, hopefully in summer. Would enjoy sitting out in the beer garden
Tight access to the car park. But manageable

Loved the oldie worldly look mixed with modern touches. Really lovely bed ,towel and hospitality tray. Continental breakfast was beyond good fresh fruits cereals breads croissants jam marmalade col d meats staff really lovely
Although you could ask for drinks at the hotel the bar was not freely open and other than breakfast no other meals or snacks were available. We would have loved to spent our evening there with a nice meal as it was our Anniversary but we had to go out to eat! Reviews we looked at said that tapas etc were available but please check closely as these reviews are 6years old.

Great value compared to other hotels in the area, friendly owner and great location and good selection at breakfast, although limited parking we didn't have to park elsewhere.
As an ex hotelier of an 1800s property I know the maintenance, we were located in room 3, few scuff marks on wall which needed a touch up but not a big deal, there were a lot of shrinkage cracks to the ceiling and peeling especially in the bathroom, also the shower plinth was loose and sealant spotted black. There were hairs in shower and around toilet generally not cleaned very well on arrival. Could do with narrower bedside units, I know they all match but that would enable bed to be moved to the right with better access to the clothes hanging area which could be awkward for the elderly.

A really good continental breakfast with plenty of variety. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. They went out of their way to be of assistance. The location is excellent as it is in the centre of the town. The room was very clean and welcoming.
Not really a complaint but there wasn't very much hanging space. The rooms are in an old house so they're quirky and there wasn't room for a proper wardrobe in our room - this wasn't really a problem for us but someone might like to be aware.

The hotel was clean and very nicely decorated. The room was the same, a nice hot shower. Plenty of tea coffee and biscuits. Staff really friendly, the general manager was superb and very helpful. Just off the High St and I'm pleased. It was minutes away but quiet on a Saturday night when the high street was really busy and noisy. Continental breakfast was lovely and fresh. A very wide range of cereals fruits meats and cheeses as well as pastries and yogurts. Coffee was really nice too.
I couldn't fault it, I've stayed in many hotels and I really liked this one.

Good central location. Interesting old building. Welcoming staff. Only a continental breakfast was offered but the choice and quality of products was exceptional.
The room was small for a superior double and there was not even one easy chair. Nowhere to hang a bathrobe - why is there never a hook on the bathroom door? In the morning the washbasin plug stuck closed so the basin couldn’t drain. Reported the problem but we were leaving so don’t know if it was resolved before the next people arrived.
