Reception staff, Ramona very helpful, especially around room change. Continental breakfast very good. Bedroom large and warm. Bed comfortable

It would be extremely helpful if there was local information in the room, particularly about buses that go into the centre as staff had no knowledge of a bus stop a few yards away from the hotel !! we spent 50 minutes waiting for a bus only to learn tfrom a passerby that hey did not run on Sundays. The central heating was on all night which was uncomfortable and ecologically extremely wasteful. In the first room we occupied (206) an electrical wire to the table lamp next to the bed was frayed, the towel rail was not working and there was an appallng noise early in the morning from a boiler in a cupboard in the corner of the room-hence the room change.

Since we were a family of five, we had to book two rooms. It would have been even better if there had been a room for all five family members or if the rooms were next to each other. The large family room did not have any USB charging ports, while the single (or double) room did have USB ports. It seems that family usage may not be very common, and business usage might be more prevalent. For breakfast, we enjoyed a full English breakfast. It was great that we could order only what the children wanted, so my daughter ordered just hash browns, and they were very accommodating with that. Very nice staff!

We didn’t have breakfast so I can’t comment on that, but the building was stunning, the location was perfect, the staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough to help. And as a bonus, although they didn’t serve evening meals, we got a take away and we were happily provided with plates and cutlery to eat it in lounge, which was a beautiful touch. The bar person even poured the perfect pint of Guinness! The amenities in our room, especially the coffee machine and biscuits were a lovely touch, and although our shower tray was leaking, they were straight on it and had it fixed. We will definitely be coming back. My partner and I would get married there if it wasn’t so far away.

Fantastic location and historic hotel, full of history and quirks an old building like this has. The breakfast was superb and the bar at night was comfortable and with an atmosphere which suited the age and style of the hotel. Car park with lots of space.

The room though clean and comfortable, was in the new part of the building with a door which led on to the street, making it noisy and didn't have the feel the rest of the hotel gave you. Hotel reception staff though again nice, were not overly chatty or welcoming.

Lovely helpful and friendly staff on reception. There was one particular young lady but I dont remember her name that really was so helpful and kind. Very good value for money. Lovely big bath and plenty of hot water. Linen was clean. Plenty of coffee/ tea etc . Location was perfect..

The bathroom was tired and missing tiles all around the bottom of the wall. The radiator in the bathroom was dirty and dusty and the plug holes and around taps etc could do with an extra scrub.. The mattress felt old and slightly uncomfortable. Door to bathroom could do with a clean especially around the handle.

Obviously the building itself is incredible and it was great to stay in a place with such history. Very friendly and professional staff, delicious breakfast cooked to order. Private parking and easy access to the town centre. Overall good value for money.

The best description is "faded elegance". Some internal renovation is definitely needed in the rooms (peeling wallpaper, stains on the bath, threadbare carpets) and a little more attention to the everyday cleaning (we were there 24 hours and despite a vacuum cleaner being permanently present on the landing, the carpet was covered in crumbs). Overall, it felt hygienic but a bit neglected.

The breakfasts were amazing and the staff was very friendly. We sat in the Medieval bar one evening and enjoyed a chat with the young Batman who was a student from Japan. He showed us the “old” interesting but creepy prisons below stairs. A very quirky 14th century Inn with ties to the Highwayman Dick Turpin.

Nothing. For the age of the Inn all efforts were made to make guests comfortable. The rooms was spotlessly clean and comfortable. A thumbs up all round.

Spacious room, very pleasant. Fantastic breakfast, plenty of choice.

The radiator wasn't on in the room and so was initially cold. It warmed up after a while when I switched it on but the bathroom towel rail didn't work at all so the bathroom wasn't very warm at all. I assumed the hotel had a restaurant (as it did last time I stayed here) and the lack of evening eating facilities might put me off booking there in future. I did manage to find a very nice Thai restaurant about 15 minutes walk away.

The medieval air about the place almost gives you goosebumps at first (even though it's obviously part of the charm), and finding a comfortable and well equipped room is rather relieving. The room was warm, which is essential in the cold season, and one can make tea or coffee, which is also nice. The hotel is surrounded by lovely old houses on a main road and is close to the town centre.

There must be quite some dust about the bed or curtains, or something else in the room, as we soon became allergic. Apart from that, the shower system is a bit difficult to operate. The corridors in the hotel are so long and we had to go up and down and up again to reach our room, which again is due to the age of the building, and was not an issue, but might be a problem if you have lots of luggage or mobility restrictions.

Breakfast was very nice with a mix of buffet and a la carte for the warm things (full English or subset thereof). The building is very interesting. The walk to the city center is pretty quick, and you also have a large supermarket around the corner. The hotel had notified me about a wedding and related potential noise well in advance, was already over when I came back in the evening.

You book here for the experience of a historic building, that resulted in a bit cramped bathroom in my room. Still fine.
