The central town location is perfect, the hotel gives an air of grandeur and is well kept and clean. The food at breakfast was superb but we didn’t try lunch or dinner. The staff are all friendly and efficient, our room was not big but adequate with an excellent shower over the bath. We would definitely recommend the Royal and will certainly return in the future.

The town centre location means all rooms are without a great view as it’s surrounded by other buildings but this is irrelevant when the hotel is this good. There are two car parks very close that belong to the hotel, the age and location of them mean parking is little tight but there is a public car park very close.

The ambience of the interior of the hotel and restaurant were impressive. The staff were so helpful and courteous. We had been allocated a designated parking space following negotiation with reception. Our friends held a blue badge and were so grateful

The heating in the lounge was a concern although the bar staff responded quickly to our request for a warmer environment. We were in Room 205 and there was a a constant sound of creaking floorboards/beams from footfall either on stairway or overhead rooms. The slope in the room spoke of its age!

We actually moved to this hotel last minute as we'd booked into a local cottage and it was absolutely disgusting. I booked this in the early hours of the morning and called them first thing to ask if I could check in early (I think check in is usually 4pm), they were so lovely on the phone and said they would do their best to accommodate this but if we did have to wait they could take care of our luggage for us. We arrived around 11am and our room had been made ready for us, having let them know about our issue at our last accommodation and how stressful it had been they even upgraded us to a better room which was so lovely! The staff couldn't do enough for you, I called room service a few times asking for things like ice etc and they brought us a whole ice bucket and two lovely glasses. Everybody I came into contact with was absolutely lovely. I will admit, when I walked through the communal hallways to get to our room, I was not expecting the actual room to be as nice as it was as the corridors were quite outdated but it was such a contrast to the rooms. Spacious, clean & comfortable with THE best shower I've ever used! The entire stay and all aspects were incredible and it's so close to everything, I'm genuinely surprised that the reviews on places like Google & trip advisor aren't better (I'd originally not booked this place as it has a 4 on trip advisor and I don't usually go below a 4.5 but honestly WOW.) If I'm ever visiting the area again this would be the only place I'd stay & it was so lovely I'm considering going back just to stay again.

I think my only gripe would be that there was no food served after maybe 10pm for room service and literally everywhere around closes around the same time. I guess ita a big expense to have a chef hired for the entire night but even if they had like some packed sandwiches etc to choose from.

The location was superb for the theatre, only a minute or two’s walk, two hotel car parks behind the building which was very convenient. The decor in the hotel is very tasteful and classy and has a lovely classic feel, quite quirky. Our room was much more spacious than expected and tea & coffee facilities were excellent. You could really tell there was a lot of history attached to the building with the quirky shape of the room and slightly uneven floor in places and was really comfortable. The bathrobes and slippers was also a very nice extra along with the bottled water. The breakfast was superb and every member of staff we saw was friendly and polite. Overall we would definitely stay here again if going to the theatre.

Everything was great but if we had to be really picky, the pillows could be a bit firmer and ‘full’ and unfortunately the ceiling was creaking quite loudly at night when someone was walking around in the room above, but was not surprising in an older, traditional hotel. We certainly wouldn’t be put off staying again, very luxurious overall.

Extremely friendly staff. Central location. Good breakfast. Dinner in restaurant very nice. First room tiny, we asked for room change, staff extremely helpful and we were allocated larger room for rest do stay . The staff even moved our bags to the other room so we could go out and not wait. Second room very nice, spacious and comfortable.

First room we were given was a double but should have been classed a single! Very small, hardly room to move, bathroom equally microscopic. After 1 night we asked to change rooms!

Very central. Handy for public transport. Very friendly, helpful and professional staff. Lovely relaxing lounge bar but also more lively separate bar. We had the carvery on Sunday. It was delicious. Our bedroom was huge with a lovely bay window.

Very minor points.... the air conditioning unit made some wierd gurgling sounds which occasionally woke us up. The floor in our room was very wonky (unsurprising really as the building is 400 years old!). This added to its charm but meant the furniture was wonky, which made the drawers difficult to open and close.

I bought the stay as a gift for my brother and his wife and they were delighted with everything - location (Barnstaple was very nice and a great base to discover North Devon), friendliness and professionalism of the staff who rung the room after their arrival to check if everything was satisfactory (a small yet incredibly professional gesture), the room appeared to be recently renovated and was very nice (a good size too).

I always love somewhere that is dog friendly! The staff were so lovely and the bar was lush! (Dog friendly too) The room was very big and the shower was clean. The hotel was in a great location surrounded by pubs and restaurants. The parking was free onsite, which was perfect as it was in the middle of town and the public car parks you had to pay for.

The only thing that would be better would be a little outside bit for the dog to use, but we didn't have an issue going across the road to find some grass.

This is exactly how a hotel should be. It was welcoming and beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. The staff were warm and friendly and professional. The room was comfortable and tastefully decorated using luxurious materials such as heavy lined curtains. The bathroom was immaculately clean , spacious and well designed. The hotel maintained its charm that comes with a historical building whilst having everything for modern day life. The food was exceptional both the evening meal and the breakfast.

There was nothing that I didn’t like.

The young lady who worked in Bar62 was absolutely AMAZING. Extremely talented in conjuring up the cocktails. Lilly’s customer service far exceeded what would be expected. Lilly is aware of her customers needs and delivers their drinks with a smile and a charm that one does not normally experience in day to day life. I thank Lilly for taking time out of her busy schedule to chat to an old man (me!!) and put a smile on my face. Young Lilly is a credit not just to the hotel, but also to her Mum.
