Staff were great, happy and helpful. They were straight on with the issue we had with the market set up in the morning.

Whilst we know the hotel was on the high street, we were not informed that the market would start setting up at 4:15AM, they had no consideration for the guests in the hotel. The hotel staff raised this with the market stall owner, and they did apologise. They should also raise this with the council. Is there a need to set up at 4AM? Our friends in other rooms were not affected as they were not at the front of the hotel. Last thing, the hotel could do with some bathroom updates, showers mainly.

A good hotel with excellent staff. They all worked well as a team, very professional in their attitude and helped each other out to keep things running smoothly. They were also good at noticing details , quick to respond , and.help. I have been here for some time and see the high quality service provided constantly. For example the other day the hotel was very busy with 2 separate funeral parties, in function rooms, a Christmas lunch party , and the normal usual visitors. I was able to sit and observe the efficient way that the staff worked very hard to provide a great service to all their visitors, whether a big party for dinner or a cup of coffee and a cake.

This is an old listed building, so unfortunately there was no lift. I needed to stay in the vicinity to be able to be available for workmen at my home . I have problems with my back and mobility issues so found the stairs a little difficult, but again the staff were quick to help. The ground floor would be ok for wheelchair users if they wanted a meal or to go in the lounge or bar

We stayed for three nights and although had booked a twin room we really wanted a double. So the staff changed the bed for our second night onwards, which was great and much appreciated. Staff were helpful and friendly. The evening meals were terrific and the breakfasts were self-serve, so you could have just what you wanted. We enjoyed the band who performed on the Sunday night - but missed breakfast on the following morning, as we were too late (9am finish)! Memo to self - must read the breakfast times in future. The bedrooms were kept exceptionally clean, as was the hotel overall. The wardrobe in our bedroom had seen better days, but bed very comfortable. Loved the open (gas) fires in several of the public rooms.

This is an old, historic hotel, of great character and charm - but no lift. Our room looked out onto a brick wall with the bins below, but this is a prominent hotel in the centre of town, not a golf course, so fair enough.

Sadly we were unable to eat at the restaurant as they did not open on the night of our stay. The breakfast was pretty good and up to the general standards of The full English or part thereof. The serving staff were extremely helpful and caring for customers with excellent examples of Northern friendlinessMy wife and I would certainly recommend The Golden Lion to visitors to the area. We had only one slight disappointment that being no heating in the bathroom in Room 1, not a problem for our family in room 2 though.

Lack of heat in bathroom of Room 1

The ground floor room was very nice, a good size with a great bathroom with a large shower. Breakfast was good with table service for all courses. We happened to mention it was our 46 th wedding anniversary and the staff really went the whole hog and made us feel very welcome with a free bottle of Prosecco, decorated table and a card. The meal was very nice too, lovely Monkfish risotto and a pork tomahawk chop with salad and chips, yummy. Managed to get free parking out the front but there is parking around the back for a small fee. The hotel is in a super location with panoramic sea views. The hotel is recently refurbished to a very high standard including many of the rooms with a upmarket lounge and bar areas, dogs also are welcome for a small fee.

Breakfast cereal choices was limited.

Room was lovely. Fan, hairdryer, trouser press, heater all provided in room, plus towels. Located right in centre of town, which was perfect.

The shower combo bath, was difficult to get in & out with glass screen. Water stayed at only 1 temperature. Would have liked hotter. I managed to shower but found it difficult to get in & out. Also for price, breakfast should have been included. Have mobility issues & had to climb 4 lots of stairs.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. Building was interesting, well placed in the town and had a lot of facilities.

Breakfast wasn't great, I had a full breakfast, just wasn't as hoped. I actually paid less and had a better cooked breakfast the day before at the hospital canteen up the road. Evening food starter was very tasty, but the waitress who started my service, then disappeared and I had to flag down a passing member of staff if required. Also on leaving the staff member on the till when asking for my bill, got my meal wrong, then got my drinks wrong by saying 2.5 pints of coke as opposed to 2 3/4pt glasses.

The room was quiet and comfortable. I had dinner in the bar - the menu was varied and included vegetarian options. The nut roast with apricot and goat's cheese and perfectly cooked seasonal vegetables was delicious. The location of the hotel is great - I was in town to do research at the county record office and it was very conveniently placed for that. Great to find the Everyman cinema a few minutes walk away - a modern building in the street behind the hotel so not impinging on the traditional feel of the main street.

Unfortunately I didn't have success linking to the hotel wifi - I suspect my room may have been too far from the router. I managed to link to a personal hotspot so wasn't too much of a problem on a short visit.

Breakfast was cooked to order, meeting exact customer requirements. Lunch and dinner were very good value, and plentiful. The team was well resourced both at reception, even late at night, and especially in the restaurant and lounges. Every member of staff was extremely welcoming, professional and had enthusiasm for their work - quite an exceptional thing in today's modern world.

The price of the room was a little on the high side at £90 room only. The net curtains were torn in places which created a poor impression on arrival. The lounge was pretty chilly throughout the day, with only one gas fire on low.

Old fashioned room was charming (apart from view of a wall) with good tea and coffee options. Bathroom was modern, well fitted and clean. Pillows not good, too hard for me. Staff lovely and helpful. Parking excellent. Nice lounge areas for guests (tho shabby furniture) Nice coffee and good hand-pull beers.

Stairs (lots of them though not steep) were quite dark due to dark carpets. Wifi ok not brilliant.
