Deeside is becoming increasingly difficult to find good accommodation outside of town with catering, thankfully the Cambus recognises this niche as important and provides excellent foot at reasonable cost.

Everything! The setting is fantastic-the gardens and trees and lovely building make a big impression as you come up the drive. The interior is olde worlde but totally in keeping with the age of the property that it feels like stepping back in time but with all the creature comforts. The staff were really helpful and kind,y upgraded us, which was very much appreciated. The hotel is situated a few miles away from Ballater but offers fantastic walking, cycling, fishing, bird watching (red squirrels too) and swimming (in the river when the flow isn’t too intense) - all from the doorstep, without the need to drive. When you do wish to use your car there are plenty of places to visit, including Balmoral and Ballater. There was an on-site bar and restaurant, really conveniently. We stayed for the evening meal and the food was great. Breakfast was included and had a lovely variety. The bed was the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in, anywhere and the shower was really luxurious. I highly recommend and would love to return.
Nothing at all - it was fabulous!

A lovely old hotel furnished with antiques in a peaceful wooded setting. There was plenty of parking. We were in Room 5 on the first floor, no lift. We had a 4-poster bed with a canopy. The room was spacious and had a couch as well as dressing table with a chair. There were USB ports beside the bed. There were comfortable lounge and dining areas as well as outside seating. Dinner was well-cooked and reasonably priced. There was a very good range of food for the self-help continental breakfast.
The only downside was that the bed was rather uncomfortable. Otherwise, everything else was great.

The history of the place, the building itself and superb location in the forest. Rustic harm of the property and all wooden encrustations and carving are simply amazing. Food was very good at the local restaurant plus a moderate selection of good whiskies . Cozy fireplace was lit during the evening. Great staff!
If I a need to point out some things it would be - a bit more cleanness and better Internet. But provided the age of the building and difficulties of leaning such intricate stone and wood work plus remoteness of the places, that's not a surprise. What I mentioned - is just part of the charm for me, but can be different for other people. Great staff and ambience compensate for those small things.

Everything😊, this was my first stay at this hotel with my dog. the hotel is so very relaxing, clean and exceptional in every way😊 The staff are very welcoming and friendly, they were very supportive of me being profoundly deaf😊 there is no deaf gadgetry in case of a fire, however I was extremely happy that if there was a fire at night someone would come into my room and wake me up, This is a big plus for me👌 There are Fabulous walks in the surrounding Forrest 😊 I have booked to come back for Christmas 😊 Also dog friendly, this is also a big plus for me😊 Dogs are not allowed in the dining room but are allowed everywhere else. So you can eat breakfast in the bar area with your dog...👌😁

We loved this stay! It is in a great location to explore or just sit and enjoy the ambiance. Jake and his staff were like family by the time we left - just a fabulous, warm staff that made you feel right at home. They made sure that we were well cared for. The cook is amazing, and we had wonderful meals there as well!
We loved everything about this old home, but some travelers who are looking for more modern, pristine accommodations may feel it is too worn. Personally, we loved that Jake is restoring it to reflect the period of the time it was built, and he has so many interesting antiques and pictures to look at. We felt like we had been transported back in time and we didn't want to leave! Would definitely stay again in a heartbeat as we personally love antiques and old homes.

It has a good location next to the River Dee where you can walk to Ballater on the path of the disused railway line. Nice views from the dining room to the Cairngorms. Fantastic loo and sauna on ground floor.
The beds were not very comfortable. We booked 2 rooms a twin room which was OK beside the bed and the annex with 2 rooms. The latter was a converted kennel - quite quirky but cramped. On the plus side it did have a nice view if the garden. Need to watch out if ticks. The turning off the main road from Ballater is tricky best approached from the other direction.

- The location was excellent for my purposes of discovering the national park & balmoral - Breakfast was lovely with dairy free options incl soya milk and vegan croissant - Great outdoor spaces if weather is good - Friendly staff - My room had a beautiful newly done up bathroom
- My room was facing a courtyard where people / employees went to smoke so every half hour or so and if my window was open, I had smoke smell in my room which just wasn‘t great. Staff was also watching films on phones there so could be pretty loud due to acoustics in the confined space

What's not to like? The hotel is historic and quaint (they were renovating rooms when we stayed but that was no inconvenience at all), it was perfect! The staff, including the owner, were so lovely and welcoming, everything fit, the decor, the people, and the food - if you're looking for an authentic Scotland experience, I'd say this is it! The fires lit in the evening were a special treat. The rooms were too cute, and we loved them all the way! Bathrooms had all the convenience of a modern hotel and the rooms all the quirkyness of a mountain B&B. The food was also really good, we enjoyed dinner both nights very much. Lovely drinks to match and great selection of and guidance with the whiskey too.
The single rooms are small, but it was no inconvenience as we only slept there.

Room was really spacious and very well furnished. Shower excellent. Continental style breakfast was good: coffee machine / hot water for tea. Derek (Manager) and Kate (chef etc) were very friendly with lots of "local" information for walks etc. Kate cooked EXCELLENT dinners each evening - different menu each night. Portions were very generous. Ideal location for walking day-trips to Loch Muick, Muir of Dinnet Nature Reserve, and Cambus o' May suspension bridge over the river Dee (walk to Ballater). Bikes are available to use (weather precluded this for us).
Renovation work going on was noisy first morning BUT workers helpfully started later for the following two days - the work to improve the hotel has to be done and "low season" is the best time. Should be finished soon.
