The staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome, the ladies who cleaned the rooms were lovely and the gentleman in the valet parking monday to Friday was just so helpful, friendly and chatty. We needed help looking for a garage as we had a problem with our car and he suggested our AA breakdown cover which we hadn't even thought of! In fact all of the men we dealt with in the garage were brilliant.

There was no ceiling light and the room was only lit with lamps if I must put down a negative, it was only a problem in the dark til we got to the switches by the bed

We booked one of their recently renovated King Rooms and was happy with the size and the side view of the seafront from the window. Breakfast should you have this part of your stay is plentiful and enough to mix it up each day for a 3x day stay. The location is ideal right on the seafront and nice to have an outside area for drinks from the bar.

The hotel has a lot of character and one function being the lift, yes OK we never had an issue with getting the lift, just was a little slow and should you want to share the lift, the lift will hold no more than 4x people and thats without luggage. The rooms were a bit dated with the furniture and the carpet in the bedroom had a few stains on. Nothing major to really feedback about.

I had a lovely king size room with a comfortable bed and an armchair with a (side) view of the sea. I also had a big bathroom with bath and shower and plenty of hot water. The public areas a very comfortable. It’s traditional in style with multiple choices of lounge areas, terrace, bar, pool table area, etc.

Some air conditioning would have been welcome, as I was there during a heatwave but a tower fan was provided and it worked pretty well. I only had breakfast once. £18 is a lot for a buffet that has quite limited choices. No scrambled eggs. No mushrooms. Only tea or instant coffee.

All the staff that I interacted with were all lovely, super helpful and friendly (housekeeping, reception and bar staff). The room was a good size and linens were clean and pillows were comfortable. They provided a bed and a bowl for our dog which was nice and a surprise as other places we’ve been have never provided this. The gym was a good gym for a holiday to keep maintaining what you have. Everything was in really good condition.

It’s an older building so some noise is to be expected, we had a loud, heavy footed person on the floor above us waking up really early (4am) and walking about for what felt like a couple of hours, which made sleeping through the night tough. The rooms are dusty and could do with a deep cleaning hoover that removes hair and dust.

Like Brighton itself, The Old Ship has seen better days, whilst retaining much of its original character and charm. Our stay was for only one night with a good sized room having a side view of the sea. The beds were very comfortable, having quality mattresses, soft cotton sheets, pillowcases and warm duvets. The bathroom was a little shabby with what looked like hurried repairs to the top of the bath and a loose floor tile by the toilet. However, there was a good TV and drink facilities, with a willing staff to top-up tea and milk supplies. Having been gradually extended through several eras since its founding in 1558, the hotel possessed a grandeur by way of furniture and fittings not found in modern hotels. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a good choice of options from cereals to fruit juices, croissants, toast, many jams, teas, coffee and a full English cooked. To complement all this, all the staff we encountered were friendly and only too willing to help. At the end of our stay, we asked if we could see the renowned “smugglers’” tunnels beneath the building and one of the assistant managers gave us an informative guided tour. Despite, the on-going need for repair and renovation work, we would still highly recommend a stay at the Old Ship Hotel.

The only real issue was the need for an on-going repair and renovation programme. One thing we did notice was a set of stained glass windows adjacent to the main staircase, containing an image of the Old Ship. As you will see in the attached photo, this was in dire need of a thorough clean.

Location was fabulous. On the seafront a short walk to the pier. Although the room was outdated (as others have said) it was very clean, with a comfortable bed and pillows. It was also spacious which was a good surprise as we only booked a standard twin. Staff were very friendly and helpful and we felt welcomed. We opted for the breakfast so we could sit at the window and have a sea view in a relaxed way before starting the day. Breakfast wasn't as sumptuous as some places but it was more than OK for us. Great rooms to lounge around downstairs. In need of TLC but comfy with some great features

Fabulous location and really friendly and helpful staff on all levels. Nothing too much trouble. Lovely large area outside at the front overlooking the sea to relax over a drink or coffee.

WiFi signal hopeless so couldn’t use my iPad in my room and not much better in reception or dining area which was very frustrating when trying to plan our trips out and places to eat and drink etc. Would have been a nightmare if visiting for work. Breakfast choices limited (only fried egg no option for poached or scrambled) but adequate and fabulous view of sea from dining room made up for it.

Loved the atmosphere, the staff were excellent. But on my second night l wanted some food and because there was a big party booked No food was available..and they had not informed me.The manager did go out for a takeaway and provided me with plate and cutlery , which l thought was excellent !!.. Also at my age 81 and difficult with mobility l needed a walk in shower which was not available and the shower was in the bath whi although low l could not get into and there was no walk in shower rooms available. But apart from that my room was lovely and my whole stay was wonderful. I will certainly return on my next visit to Brighton but obviously try to book a room with walk in shower. Very satisfied Jane Law.

although the hotel is old and in need of a little tlc in some places, we had a very nice few days staying here,The the breakfast's were very good we also ate in the restaurant in the evening and that was also very good and well priced. on arrival we were upgraded to a Seaview room which was very comfortable and warm, All the staff were very friendly and polite and nothing was to much trouble, we would not hesitate to stay here again.

parking can be a problem and expensive, we arrived early and managed to get into the hotel car park at £25 a night, other parking be quite a walk away and up to £40 a night

I loved how comfortable our room was and we had an incredible view of the ocean from our room. I also loved how clean our room was - they were very thorough and timely. It felt like no one was there, but someone was still there to be attentive to our room and needs. The staff were so kind and helpful as well as constantly available too. The location was so convenient and close to everything - you could see Brighton Palace Pier from our room!

I think that the breakfast at the hotel could be better or more varied day to day. It was nice to have a hot breakfast every morning, but I think it would have been nice to have some changes. Also yes, accessible by elevator, but slow, small/ I know there isn't much you can change about that because it is historical to the building, but just something to consider if you're looking for improvement.
