I booked this for my father who was visiting from France. From the initial dealings with the hotel by phone when I was getting all the information my father needed to make his stay more comfortable for him was perfect. He stated that when he arrived all staff were very helpful, the room was clean and ready for him. The only thing was as normal with places situated in city's the parking was difficult so it was easier for him to leave his car in the hotel carpark and use taxis, other than than the hotel and Exeter itself was really good.
Parking was expensive outside of the hotel

The staff were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. They gave us a room in a quiet part of the building away from any lift and stairway, which always helps as I am a very light sleeper. The room was very comfortable and clean, and cool thanks to the air conditioning, which helped cool us down after a rather warm day of walking. It also came with a kettle and tea, coffee and milk sachets. Even better, there were spare milk sachets in reception for you to use - I always run out of those things on the first full day. Breakfast was well stocked - some people might complain there were not enough items in the hot food section - but I thought it was a good choice of foods.
The tea mugs in the room and at breakfast were very small, such that you needed two cups of tea to come close to a proper cuppa in the morning. If you like a good cuppa, take your own full-size mug, that's what I do. Breakfast could be a bit cramped, especially at weekends. But the staff do their best to be accommodating and we always managed to get a table straight away. Maybe be mindful of this and head down earlier than you usually would for breakfast.

Straight as we got into reception, both ladies were very helpful and answered any questions. Our continued stay every staff members was polite even lent us an umbrella when it was raining. We wanted to stay an extra night, and another staff member did everything to accommodate us and even managed to keep us in the same rooms so we didn't have to repack. Breakfast was very reasonable. I had enough of everything to be happy for the day ahead. When we asked for extra toilet rolls etc was no problem. For a 3 star 🌟 I would of rated this place a 4 it certainly ticked so many boxes and will definitely stay here again.
A little crowded at breakfast time but was sat down within minutes again staff very kind and helpful.

Modern, clean, straightforward. Five minute walk to the river and weir, an ideal dog walk and a ten minute walk into the city centre and Cathedral. Breakfast was busy but well organised and the cooked breakfast was very acceptable. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Air con worked well and was quiet.
Window in the room is non opening, so no fresh air and forced to use the air con. Wasn’t aware when booking that there’s an additional £30 charge to have our dog in the room. Difficulty at breakfast as there are only a couple of dog friendly tables but we’re offered the option to take breakfast to our room. Guess we could have eaten it in our car, as there’s the option to have our windows open.

It was a nice hotel. Pretty standard and similar to other chain hotels. Everything seemed fairly clean apart from the floor which could have been hoovered better in the corners and edges of the room. They had 2 types of pillow to choose from with one firm and one soft which is nice and the bathroom has Dove products to use which is a good quality.
The carpet could have been cleaner but it wasn’t too bad. The breakfast was perfectly fine but could have had more options perhaps for the continental but it did have everything that was on the menu. There was a sign above the coffee machine saying what drinks they did including hot chocolate but then the machine does not do hot chocolate which was a bit of a shame.

All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful - the rooms were spotless as were all the communal facilities - nothing was too much trouble - and they were very welcoming to our little dog who was travelling away with us for the first time. We were super impressed.
Nothing that they could do about this at the hotel but.....ideally a bit more floor space in the rooms would make the hotel completely perfect but....for a short stay it really isn't a problem. The room was well decorated, super clean and very comfortable so all good!

The location was perfect for our purposes, a short walk to the Cathedral and (in the other direction) to the quayside, with its restaurants, information centre and boat trips. Our room was a good size, quiet, and with everything we needed to make our stay of six nights very comfortable. The breakfasts were very good, even when the hotel was full of guests. Perfect scrambled eggs and everything else to get our active days off to a good start. All the members of staff were very pleasant, and worked to a high standard. Special mention for Dawn, who is a lovely lady and made us feel cared for throughout our stay. We will definitely put Holiday Inn hotels at the top of our list for other staycations, and hope that they meet Exeter standards.
We liked everything.

Accommodation was perfect for our needs and rooms great and comfy, breakfast also good
The member of staff that booked us in was lovely and super helpful, and also was working the following day and greeted us warmly. There was a woman working, she had a black uniform so I assumed a manager who was extremely rude, spoke very abruptly to the gentleman servicing us and I heard her swearing under her breath. She appeared to be a senior member of staff but in my opinion, shouldn’t be. Or at least should be spoken to to tell her her behaviour was not acceptable.

The room was good. There were no unnecessary annoying lights in the room, so it was properly dark with the curtains closed and the lights off. It was very quiet. We did not hear any noise from other guests. We loved the pets policy. Although we no longer have a dog, we enjoyed seeing the dogs of other guests and it gave us an excuse to chat.
The main lights in the room were too bright. It could have done with a middle option between the main lights and the bedside reading lights The dining area was too crowded at breakfast time, people kept bumping our chairs. May be extend breakfast to 10:00 every day rather than just a weekends so as to avoid the 9:00 rush and remove a table so that they can be spaced out a little more? The evening menu was very limited and the quality was sub-standard. We only ate in once and it had a "ready-meal" quality to it.

Ideal location (we have stayed here before), by the River Exe, close to University, St David's station, the historic Quayside, and Exeter town centre. Really welcoming and wonderfully set up quiet room. Mains and USB power points each side of the bed were very welcome, which is not always the case in many hotels, including other Holiday Inn Expresses... Excellent breakfast including Marmite for those marmite lovers...
Separate paid car parking, £16 a day and we did pay on arrival only to not find a space late on our last night... Street parking was free until 11:00 on the Sunday, though.
