I often stop off in Moffat as this is great wee town in a stunning location. For starters there's cheap fuel only a mile off the M74, there's also an antiques shop, a plant nursery, a great butcher, cafes, etc, all with free parking. This is the first time I've stayed overnight in the town and The Famous Star Hotel was excellent. I didn't eat there myself (instead choosing the Indian restaurant two doors down which was first class, and the Rumblin' Tum cafe for breakfast) but I heard a couple saying that the hotel food is very good. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, the hotel was spotlessly clean, the pub at the back was welcoming and serving a very fine ale local ale. I'd definitely stay again and shall have breakfast there next time.

This isn't a complaint but an observation, as it's inherent in the nature of the building; I noticed that you can hear what's going on in the adjacent rooms as the walls are thin – if you're a light sleeper, this may bother you.

Our room was clean, nice and well presented. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fit for purpose.

The hot water tank provision is an issue. It is a very old system that heats the shower water with an immersion heater. It is not capable of dealing with guests showering at the same time. When the tank empties it makes this almighty noise that we had for about 15 minutes or so. We were unsure if this would continue through the night. We went to reception and they said it had never happened before. However, the signs in the bathrooms share that the hot water is limited and that you may have to wait for hot water but to be patient. Thankfully after about 9pm the hotel was really quiet and we slept well.

The location and staff were brilliant. The evening meal was tasty and portion size great. We are both vegan so it was great to have choices. Before dinner we wanted a quiet space to relax and so sat in the dinning area as the main bar was too noisy for us. We had booked a table but was glad we could use it earlier. We like the drink choices too.

We are sorry to say the bed was really uncomfortable and neither of us slept well as the bed really needed a topper. We would have rated the hotel as a 10 if this improved. We both had painful hips from the bed. We booked breakfast which was ok but not as good as the evening meal and there was no plant based milk available so I used my own.

We received a very friendly welcome in the cosy Lounge bar. Check in was very simple, and we enjoyed a decent dinner in the Lounge bar that evening, with a few drinks. The room was comfortable (nice firm mattress) and the shower powerful. We enjoyed a very nice and reasonably priced vegetarian breakfast the following morning.

It's a very minor thing but, the room (Room 1) was very warm and the duvet quite thick. Even adjusting the radiator down didn't seem to help, so we slept with the window open, which was fine.

A warm welcome from the staff at the bar. Room was small, but absolutely fine for our 1 nigh stay. Bar staff managed to find us a table in the "full bar", and the food in the restaurant was fantastic. Good breakfast in the morning. We arrived during a festival in the town, so everywhere was very busy , but the staff really looked after us

A bit of a nightmare for parking - however this was not the hotels fault as there was a festival on the Saturday when we arrived, I am sure that at other times, there is no issues at all. Other than that everything was great

myself and two friends arrived at the hotel Saturday afternoon and received a lovely warm welcome from the lady behind the bar when we checked in, she found our bookings, allocated our rooms, we booked breakfast and then went off to shower and meet up with some other friends we had travelled with. this is the first time i have stayed at the Star hotel despite staying in Moffat many times, i will be booking again to stay here.

Great overnight stop after long weekend in Highlands. The shower was amazing after a wild camp. Room was clean and comfortable. Stayed on a Sunday night and looked around town for something to eat but everywhere else was full or closed early (7pm Black Bull!!) So came back to the hotel to eat. SO glad really as the home made venison pie was astounding. Breakfast likewise was a cracking scottish breakfast alongside a breakfast bar with cereals fruit etc. Overall a lovely hotel for the price.

There was a public bar round the back which was under our room in the hotel so it was a bit noisy but wasn't late. There was also a bit of a drains smell in the shower. The restaurant bar options could do with a few more whiskies. But these were all very minor things.

It’s a great family run hotel, with a really committed and friendly team. Though the hotel is only 20 feet wide, the bedroom was quite big enough and had a huge and very comfortable bed. We ate dinner, which was excellent, and the breakfast was also very well prepared. It’s a very handy location it’s free parking outside.

No lift, of course, but a member of staff helped with the luggage. The breakfast coffee rather let things down.

Great historic quirky place, friendly and welcoming. Small pleasant, well appointed room, reading spotlight over bed, light over mirror and sockets near bed. Comfy bed, good thick curtains plus blind. Small shower room. Spiral type stair case but found easy to go up. Had a lovely evening meal and cooked breakfast. Manage to park opposite the hotel (free parking). Great place for stop over or for touring area. Would stay again if in area, great value for money. Thank you for a lovely stay.

An exceptionally warm welcome at check in. Staff really friendly and helpful throughout my stay; nothing too much trouble. Room very clean and warm. Plenty of towels and a really comfy bed. Delicious Sunday dinner. Good value for money and a great location too!

Shower room a bit dated but plenty of hot water and good water pressure.
