We stumbled upon this gem Christmas 3 years ago. We stayed one night and knew we would be returning. Last year we spent 9 days and this year we made it a point to choose one night on our trip to stay here. This place “completes” our Christmas vacations. The historic feel always brings me to a time where things were so simple. We always request a historic front view room overlooking Outlaw Square. The rooms never disappoint. Yes they are dated, but, for us, that’s what makes the place so desirably unique! The staff is incredibly nice and always have the information on places we ask about. They truly go above and beyond! And let’s not forget about the restaurant and the OMG best breakfasts we’ve had on any of our trips. I can’t imagine a Christmas trip without The Historic Franklin Hotel as part of it.

The history behind the building is something I’ve always loved. Unfortunately, it looked like they were getting ready to “upgrade” many of the historic features & rooms there.

Buffet was $45 each! I realize they are pricey to run but maybe consider making the seafood or steak part an add-on. $45 in this economy isn’t sustainable. Especially with amazing food options just down the street for half that $. I would have been happy with a deluxe salad bar & fancy desserts for $25 at the Franklin. But not $45. So although we had a room & gambled at The Franklin, we were priced out of being able to actually dine there. 😕 Also, huge disappointment to no longer see live roulette there. In fact, only computer roulette, which I won’t play. Why would I drop good $ to play video games I can play at home? Live gaming (or at least an actual marble) or none at all for table games.

The historical significance and supreme location of the Franklin hotel was a key reason to stay there for our 1 week Deadwood experience. Staff was friendly and accommodating and quickly addressed renovation issues to satisfy our needs. The room renovations for beds bathrooms and furnishings are first class.

Had to end the vacation after only 1 week in such a fun and comfortable place.

I used to work in a Historic Hotel, and I knew what to expect in terms of small outdated rooms, however The Historic Franklin takes this in to consideration when it comes to value. I paid less than almost a third of the rate of the historic hotel I worked at. Also the place I worked at used Full beds instead of queens in their smaller rooms to make them feel bigger. The Franklin not only had a queen bed, but a twin as well. The staff was great, and fulfilled a special request for my son. (he loves to play poker with us, and was bummed he could not go to the Casino, so he was given 2 decks of cards at check-in.

There were only two downsides, and I believe one is in the process of being fixed. The beds were not comfortable, but we saw a sign stating they were remodeling the rooms this winter (2024) and actually saw the new beds in an out of commission room on our floor. The other is the Buffet that is associated with the hotel. I now work at a Hotel/Casino with a Buffet, and the Franklin's buffet is very lacking especially for the price ($30/person) there was very few enticing options. I will say the staff at the buffet were great though.

Fun place to stay. Historic hotel in Deadwood means it's old, obviously. Old hotel means that it's not got all the modern conveniences, which is their charm, really. We stayed in the Seth Bullock room, which had 2 comfortable queen beds and a very small bathroom. It had a cast iron claw-foot bathtub with an old track on it for the shower curtain. Nobody goes to Deadwood to spend lots of time in their room. You go to visit history, and this place has loads of it.

We enjoy staying at the Franklin. We have stayed several times and like the historic feel, the value and the location. We also love Legends restaurant so it's convenient to be staying right upstairs.

With the historic feel comes a lack of modern, high end comfort. While we completely expect it, there are a few things this time we wished were different. First, the room we stayed in this time was super dark. There were only two small sconce lights and it just was too dark. Also, there was zero ability to adjust the temperature in the room and it got pretty warm in there. Lastly, and this is definitely just a wish...I would have liked to have a full length mirror. It was hard to get ready only being able to see my top half :)

everything room was awesome our room was 312 we've been coming for 3 yrs now for vacation we love the historic ,shopping excellent service food beverrage just amazing the shows enactments fun fun !!!! we enjoy the employees weve become friends !! Especially Ivan , Brandon & Bull :)

We love the overall feel of the place. What some people consider “old” is what we look for. The view of Main Street is stunning from Big and Rich room. Dinner at Legends was amazing as usual. We were there during a blizzard this time. There was a problem with staff being able to get to work, but the front desk and the bellman was incredible at finding us a place for breakfast and kept us updated on the clearing of the parking lot since all the vehicles had been snowed in.

The hotel and rooms itself were average but we wanted to stay in a historic hotel while in Deadwood, SD. The staff was courteous and very helpful. The best part of our stay was eating at the hotel restaurant "Legends". Probably the best steak I ever had.

Rooms were just OK. The carpet was stained stained, plaster was cracked, paint was chipping and the shower temperature fluctuated between hot and cold.

Loved the service the bellhop and front desk were always so pleasant and helpful

I didn’t like that as a guest we weren’t allowed first come first serve access to good seats for the outdoor concerts across the street and up on the veranda instead they were reserved for high roller gamblers we are guests there just because we didn’t spend a lot gambling we spent a good amount to stay there for 4 days ☹️
