The feel and ambiance. The log fire on entering the reception and warm greeting. The historical feel of the whole place is enchanting. We had a suite which was spacious, beautifully equipped, and a lovely bathroom with a roll top bath. You could feel the age and history of the building. The staff were very friendly. We felt so comfortable and relaxed, we overslept. Don’t stay here if you want a generic, sterile hotel room. But I’d you’d rather have a cultural experience in a hotel right on the harbour side, minutes from bars, restaurants, and the shops; this is the place for you.

Nothing.

The breakfast was delightful, especially the salmon, meat, cheese, and maple pecan croissant. The room was cozy and tidy, and the location is fantastic—super convenient for getting around.

At night, it got really loud because of people drinking in the nearby bar. Sometimes, it was hard to sleep well with all the noise. The maple pecan croissant isn't available every day, and the elevator is a bit small, making it challenging to use with large luggage.

I booked the deluxe double room for the amazing bathtub, I was originally put into a room with only a shower that was on the 2nd floor but basically in the basement - one small window that looked out to a restaurant so you couldn’t keep the curtain open so felt dark and depressing, the curtains were falling off the rod, there were no outlets near the bed for charging so a table had to be moved to use a plug, wifi wasn’t great - for the cost I was not loving the experience. The staff very kindly moved me to a room with a tub and it was a night and day experience. Had real full windows, outlets and USB plugs beside the bed, tub was incredible, a really gorgeous room. All of this to say, booking the ‘deluxe double’ can go two very different ways!

My original room in the basement, breakfast buffet wasn’t amazing in my opinion.

EVERYTHING!! We stayed at the Det Hanseatiske Hotel 3 times on our trip to Norway ~ for a total of 9 nights. This is more than a hotel ~ it is a delightful combination of old timbers from the days of the Brygen fish market, interesting suites and fabulously updated bathrooms and facilities! From the warm welcome by the owner, Eric to the delicious and healthy breakfasts, we felt that this was home (actually ~ even better!). Anytime of day we could enjoy the comfortable lounge ~ beautiful and colourful ~ and of course treat ourselves with great coffee! The family work tirelessly to update and care for this historic building and are gracious and welcoming hosts. We live in Canada and just wish we were closer so that we could visit more often.

Can't think of a thing!

Eric, Nicholas and Tomas were so friendly and helpful!! This is very important to us 🤗 We love the beautiful melding of old timbers, artistic walls, materials, furniture with the new ~ the bathroom with heated floor was a real treat! Then the bountiful breakfasts ~ with such healthy and fresh foods, delicious coffee and the BEST bread! Also, being in the center of town we were able to come and go ~ even for a nap. We're so glad to be returning 2 more times before returning to Canada. Thank you for all your hard work in creating a haven for visitors. Judy and John

Lovely old hotel with a superb breakfast buffet and a nice quiet room with a very comfortable bed and excellent shower. Perfect location for seeing the old Hanseatic harbor city of Bergen. Front desk clerks were very friendly and helpful in getting us a taxi, storing our bags, etc.

Construction in the front of the hotel. (A city project.) Nobody manning the lobby bar. We had requested a top floor room, but didn't realize there was no elevator to that floor. We were carrying more than our normal luggage, making that climb a challenge. Prior to our arrival we had to deal with several email efforts to scam us into paying for the hotel again. This turned out to be a problem for many hotels in Bergen, not this hotel's fault, but it raised concerns prior to our trip.

Amazing decor. Really stylish and original, with beautiful wooden beams in the room. Room was big and had a nice seating area. Elegant bathroom. The breakfast was served until 10.30, which was great as we are not early risers and we lose an hour, coming from the UK! It was plentiful and varied, with really good bread, crackers, yoghurt, cereals, cold meats and cheese and scrambled eggs and bacon.

This is a traditional building and we did sometimes hear guests' footsteps in the room above (we were on the first floor, with rooms above us). Although everywhere is carpeted, do not expect the sound insulation to be that of a modern hotel.

The room we had was located on the top floor and was very spacious and comfortable with all amenities. The bathroom was large with a separate toilet which is always a bonus. The hotel is in the perfect location! Within walking distance to everything. The staff were super friendly and one of the guys kindly went and got me extra tea bags as I had run out in the room. The breakfast included was amazing! They had such a great selection of foods and drinks, probably one of the best breakfasts I’ve had.

I can’t think of any negatives at all. Everything was perfect :-)

Staff help was exceptional and prompt. Breakfast was very good. Location was very convenient regarding local sites and attractions, restaurants, shops, etc.

Negativity in my comments had to do with room type we chose - rustic or wood beamed. Problem was that the emergency fire water pipes were exposed on slanting ceiling, and valve protruded. It took me 2 days to avoid smacking my head on the valve. I suppose the fault was not insisting on another room immediately, so this is perhaps my bad and not the hotel's. They are dealing with an historic building, which has its' limits as well as its' charm.

We enjoyed the claw foot bathtub and the extra space in this superior room. We loved the character and ambiance of this historic hotel. the location was fantastic -- walking distance to so many things, including the old town and train station.

The person checking us in at the front desk did not check that we had prepaid, and charged us again (both us and the other couple we were travelling with). Also know that the elevator does not go to all the floors, and our friends on the upper floor had to walk up the last flight, and their room, while it had two twin beds, was very narrow, and set up like a dormitory, even though it was titled as a Standard Twin Room. this style of room should have another designation, like economy. Breakfast was just ok compared to many of the other hotels in Norway.
