Landlady was wonderful. We arrived with a rib on a trailer which we had initially thought would fit in the back car park. On arrival we couldn't fit so we were trying to maneuvere into a parking bay at the front. Rather than let us struggle (hubby &wife couple) she got some local chaps who were having a drink to come and help us move it in. It was really appreciated &made the task much easier for us. The evening meal was beautifu. the menu had lots to choose from with plenty of gf options for those that need it. The Lamb shank was spot on. The fire was on in the pub. The atmosphere cosy and warm. Breakfast again was very tasty the next day. Would definitely stay here again . We were having an overnight stop over to break up a long journey to scotland and would definitely stay here again knowing you will be fed well in a relaxing atmosphere. Thankyou for a lovely stay.

We were staying here for one night enroute to Scotland and it made a very nice start to our holiday. The room was very clean and comfortable, with plenty of hot water for showering. We really enjoyed the food, which was all home cooked. The breakfast was lovely, with plenty of choice and the service was impeccable. Extremely friendly and lovely people. I would definitely recommend staying here.

We do find it difficult to get a dairy free alternative to milk wherever we stay, it's not only this particular hotel. The further north we travel, the less choice we have.

A pleasant enough room, if not particularly spacious, but much as you would expect in an old building such as this: at least the pub has kept its character. The host, Jackie, was welcoming and cheerful and all of the staff that we encountered were similarly helpful. The pub had a good number of locals in on the Sunday that we were there - always a good sign. The evening meal was tasty and well presented, although the menu was a bit heavy on dishes with cream sauces of one sort or another. Good, imaginative, well cooked food though. Breakfast was good, with a selection that should suit most tastes. A walk around the village revealed plenty of old, characterful buildings, several of which are working farms. All in all an enjoyable stay.

No complaints at all.

Really nice stay in this local pub in a quiet village. The owners Steve and Jacky are just fantastic and make the stay special. Fabulous food with no signs of burgers or pizzas superbly cooked and presented. Very nicely decorated place restful and comfortable. Really couldn’t fault it and we’d happily stay here again and highly recommended.

Nothing!

Had a superb 2 night break. Owners are very friendly and eager to ensure your comfort and satisfaction. Spotlessly clean and well furnished bedrooms and downstairs reception rooms and bar. Restaurant is very comfortable and food cooked to perfection by Steve owner, generous portions and everything sourced locally. We shall return and be happy to recommend to friends and family. Excellent location and plenty of parking spaces.

Everything was to our satisfaction and nothing to improve upon.

The staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous, our room was spacious and very comfortable, we had an evening meal which was wonderful as was breakfast the next morning, the area was quiet and within easy reach of M6 . Would happily return and recommend to anyone.

Disabled parking wasn't possible sadly which meant having to park at the rear of property and make my way to the front to check in.

We stayed at the black swan for 3 nights and used it as a base to travel out around the Lake District. Steve and Jacky were very welcoming and there was always laughing and joy in the air. It has a really homely feel to it throughout our stay. The rooms are lovely and have everything you would need, the bed was very comfortable after long walks and activities. The breakfast was amazing and a perfect start to an active day. A superb place to stay, relax and enjoy everything the Lake District has to offer. Thank you Jacky & Steve

There wasn’t anything not to like!

Great out of the way location, local pub and meeting house, this gem is tucked right outside Penrith. We were very late arriving and they were kind enough to make us sandwiches even though the kitchen was closed. So fun to meet some of the locals and sample some local beer.

The shower was a little snug.

The owners were so friendly and the waitress was excellent so friendly, the food was excellent so was the breakfast quality ingredients well cooked.our room was spotlessly clean and a comfortable bed.

There needs to be a tray in shower to put shampoo etc. In a very small thing in an otherwise excellent stay.

Location was excellent. Far enough off the busy main road to be quiet, yet close enough to be convenient. Lovely walks from the doorstep. Food ( both breakfast and dinner) were outstanding.

A little noise from restaurant and bar area. Also pillows were too hard. Neither of these things would stop us from staying here again. Staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient.
