The food was amazing! There was a lot of food that was local and enjoyable to eat. If you enjoy seafood, then the food was delicious and presented so nicely. The onsens were very enjoyable to soak in, with a choice of 3 private and 1 public onsen. Very considerate extras - combs, razors, cream etc in case you need and the service is fantastic. Extremely friendly and helpful. We loved the location as it is about 25 minutes to get to Gora to sightsee or 40 minutes to Lake Ashino. We enjoyed sleeping to the sound of a river at night. Was so peaceful, soothing and relaxing.

Some of the sliding doors were a little squeaky but it wasn't too bad. Also, as it is a Ryokan they make the bed where you eat so you can't lay on your bed.

Our stay at Fukuzumiro was one of the most unique and wonderful experiences of my life. We were in Japan for two weeks on honeymoon and were recommended this traditional ryokan by a friend. I'm so glad we stayed because it was an incredibly special experience - from the moment we arrived and exchanged our shoes for slippers and our travelling clothes for traditional yukata, we felt like we'd stepped into a different time. The room and the whole building are spectacular - all wood and paper panels, tatami mats and screen doors, right beside a beautiful flowing river, up against the mountain - it looks like an old Japanese painting. There are several onsen hot spring baths available and we were able to book a private one (just put your room name onto the list in the foyer, it's really easy). It was so luxurious and relaxing, and after this we went back to our room where our kind and attentive hostess laid out the most incredible multi-course meal for us. Just try everything - each dish is more delicious and exquisite than the last. Our futons were very comfortable and the sound of the river lulled us into a deep sleep. The next day we opted for the Japanese breakfast which was almost as extensive as the dinner, and another onsen session. This is a real VIP experience and a taste of old Japan - worth every penny.

We arrived before the check-in time and the staff person (lovely old man) greeted us nicely, spoke decent English and was very accommodating. He arranged for our luggage to be moved into our room when ready and gave us forms to fill out about our dietary requirements, preferred meal times and heights for our yukatas. Afterwards he gave us a map of Hakone and showed us the nearest train station (6 min walk) and bus stop (2 min walk), the recommended sightseeing areas/attractions and transport modes/routes to use with the Hakone Freepass. We returned later in the afternoon to check-in and was shown around the main facilities of the ryokan (bathrooms and private/publics spas) and how to book a spa timeslot. Our room attendant showed us our room and supplies/amenities/equipment and how to use them. She explained how to correctly wear the yukata and bathing etiquette in the spas. During meal times, she also explained what the dishes and ingredients were and how to eat the food. Although the room attendants spoke limited English, they were able to effectively communicate to us and other guests at the ryokan. They spoke Japanese into Google Translate and the app spoke back the translation into our preferred language. Since we also spoke limited Japanese, we were actually able to converse with our room attendant and have a more meaningful interaction. The staff provided exceptional service and made the trip memorable. The quadruple room we stayed in was spacious, beautiful and clean. The staff prepared our futons to sleep in, gave us fresh towels and yukatas to wear and made sure we were comfortable. The food we had for dinner and breakfast tasted fresh and delicious. We also ordered sake and umeshu to complement our meals. We would love to stay at Fukuzumiro again in the future.

This place felt like stepping straight into a ghibli movie! The view from the window looked out over a river and a tree in blossom. There was so much space, the staff are really kind and helpful, the location is great - walking distance to the town and station for adventures but on the outskirts for peace and quiet. The breakfast was an experience in itself, we felt really spoiled. The Onsen was just beautiful, we booked a private one because you can't wear a swimming costume, really easy and cheap to book and just stunning.

Only downside was a shared bathroom with no shower - this didn't cause any major hiccups because you shower before you hit the Onsen anyway, and we shared with one other room. It was a bit tatty compared with the rest of the place, so be aware and book your Onsen with shower unless you're happy to share the public (single sex) one. I was too shy!!

The most charming traditional inn - positioned perfectly on the water. Quiet, but walking distance into town for restaurants, etc. The staff were so kind. We travelled with two small children (1,3) and they were very welcome. We could book the private onsen twice a day to enjoy as a family and had amazing dinner in the room each night. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. Don’t be put off by the lack of private bathrooms - the whole experience will make up for it. You bathe before using the onsen in a private space anyway. Toilets are just down the hall. Our son loved feeding the fish on site each day, and using the big hall to run around and play. If we ever come back to Japan - we will stay here for sure

Nothing.

I had a wonderful experience here thanks to the kind and attentive staff who made me feel truly welcome. They even used Google Translate to help explain the facilities and meals, which was incredibly thoughtful. The food was absolutely delicious, and the onsens were spotless and easy to use. My room was comfortable, with a beautiful view overlooking the river. We also enjoyed a peaceful morning stroll through the garden before breakfast. The staff were very helpful in arranging luggage forwarding, making our stay even more convenient. If you're looking for an authentic and memorable stay, this is the perfect place.

Nothing - it was amazing to stay in such a historical building and the staff were so welcoming

I loved everything!! It’s so unbelievably beautiful!! Built in 1890 and renovated in 1910, it’s full of historical charm and beauty. It feels like going back in time. The onsen are nice and hot and really pretty. So nice that you can have private or shared baths. My room was gorgeous and comfortable, overlooking the river so I could sleep to the sound of rushing water all night. The food was incredible. One of the best meals I’ve had in Japan. They accommodated my celiac disease with an incredible gluten free meal, and also catered to my vegetarian/ pescatarian preferences. I also enjoyed excellent sake, matcha, and traditional sweets that were gluten free. East ten minute walk from the train station. Location is quiet and it was convenient to catch the bus to the open air museum from here. Excellent staff and service. My only regret is that I couldn’t stay longer!

The best experience and highlight of my Japan trip!! Everything was perfect. The location is so stunning in a dark green forest area with a beautiful river right outside your window. It’s not too far from the main town, but still quiet and tucked away. The whole building is very old and traditional Japanese style, the rooms are not only beautiful with amazing views of the river, but also very cosy and comfortable. The onsens are very nicely laid out and easy to book the private onsens. The food was amazing, make sure to get the traditional option for both dinner and breakfast! There is so much variety in the food you get many tiny dishes and it’s so unique and special. A special thanks to our lovely room attendant Akiko, she made the experience more memorable as she was sooo sweet and accomodating. This was the best experience and I’ll always remember it.

Meals were incredible - we did the amazing included dinner and breakfast, which were delivered to our room at the time of our choosing. Our room attendant Akiko was so attentive and kind and wonderful. All the staff were so helpful - peak Japanese hospitality. Sure, other reviews have the property is a little older, so it has some quirks, but that is 1000% of its charm. You sleep on futon, so it's a little firmer, but great for back sleepers. Onsen were wonderful - clean, private, gorgeous, great views. The whole property is just proper old world Japanese vibes.

What an amazing traditional Inn. We only stayed for one night as a little treat but how incredible. The staff are amazing, we had a lady called Minori (apologies if I have got this wrong) who was simply splendid. From the moment you arrive you feel like you're in a Ghibli movie, with 3 scalding hot private onsen to choose from (book when you're there by writing your name in the slot), and 2 gendered onsen which switch at 7pm. We arrived at 4pm and made the most of our bath time, taking one before dinner, one after, and one just before breakfast. The dinner and breakfast was first rate - one of the best experiences of our lives. The service and spectacle alone is worth the extra fee - inform them before arrival you want dinner. Futon beds made out for you were so comfy it was hard to wake up! Overall I could not fault it. We would have loved to stay longer but couldn't really afford it. I would definitely watch a video online about staying at a Ryokan just so there are no confusing aspects to contend with. If you're doing all the Hakone activities in the day like we did it is fantastic, but I would really recommend making the most of your time here and would advise getting here no later than 5pm as dinner is at 6pm.

Some areas are a bit old but I found this quite endearing and unless you're very picky this is clearly a world class establishment
