Location, food, staff customer service, experience staying at an authentic ryokan. The full board meals were very good opportunity to expose us to Japanese food we wouldn’t normally get at a restaurant. Staffs were all very helpful and try their best to explain things in English. There’s a number of items for hire and free amenities too. Close to public transport, bus and trains to the popular tourist sites and Odawara/Hakone Yumoto station.

The toilet has a mouldy smell. Otherwise, everything was great! Warning- there’s no lift so make sure you pack light if bringing it to the hotel. There’s no room service or porter service.

The history of the place. The room was very large as we came from Tokyo. The view was pretty and I wanted my son to experience what it was like in a traditional Ryokan stay. The rooms are equipped with modern air cons that serve as heaters which kept the room cosy when we were awake. The full board meals are huge. Particularly for dinner and we could never finish what was served. We stayed for 3 nights.

You have to lay out your own bedding and pack it daily. They run on a skeleton staff where the front desk double up as servers in the dining. Given that it is a centralised kitchen serving all their properties I feel this impacts on the quality of and taste of the food and limits what they can serve. I feel they they try and make up for it with large quantities.

Location is truly magnificent. Our rooms were like a time portal and the hotel is a grand old building with real character. Staff are friendly and informed, although you may struggle to convey some things if not speaking Japanese. Each room had a solid welcome kit. There are 3 lovely and clean onsen - the best one is reserved for men in the mornings and women in the evenings. If you like full tatami mat rooms, putting out your own futons to your own desired spot and thickness, not being disturbed in your room, and having a cute walk to the train station down a picturesque valley, this is the spot for you. It was beautiful, windswept, cold and peaceful in the valley, with the cutest train and some lovely mountains to climb right outside. It's rare to find a property with this much history and authenticity on a booking site like this and with so many minute adjustments to suit a more modern / western crowd who appreciate Japanese tradition. As a group we struggled with the sukiyaki dinner on the first night, and while other guests were served that menu on our second night we were given a different menu with modifications based on what we probably enjoyed from the first dinner. This was thoughtful and happened without us asking, and the dining room staff deserve real commendation for their efforts. Breakfast was also seemingly adjusted to suit us, and was nice and authentic. Couldn't have hoped for a better stay.

Some spots needed a little cleaning but this is understandable in a building of that age and design. If you find it hard to walk or climb stairs, think twice.

We were surprised by fixed menu breakfast, and not prepared as we have vegan requirements. The staff were great in the way they arrange a suitable swap to the food, but would have been good to have been given the opportunity to provide dietary requirements in advance.

It was raining all day and we had to store our wet shoes in cupboards in the foyer. This could have been improved by having somewhere for our shoes to be able to dry before having to put them on wet the next day.

The place was strategically located near the bus stop and the train station. We had a beatiful room facing the river. The room is spacious, clean and well equipped with a mini fridge, safety box and hot water thermos dispenser, yukatas. There were oranges and hot water prepared when we arrived. I like that the washroom is clean. Also the private onsen for family members was great. I like the scheduled dinner and breakfast, everything was prepped when we arrived. Great customer service. Lots of food and all you can drink. I love how charming this old traditional ryokan. It is a very nice gem and well maintained. Especially, the Tonosawa train station near the ryokan. It’s super cute and hidden, with the red train and rustic surrounding, it will take you back in time. Book your stay here. They also have rooms with private onsen.

I didn’t like how low the sink in our room and how there’s no toilet in the rooms. But it is a heritage building and that’s how it is back then. It gives you a different experience and it’s not really a bad thing.

As soon as you enter the hotel, you feel the amazing atmosphere of Traditional Japan. The rooms were amazing, a little worn but that didn't take away from the charm. The man who served our breakfast was very friendly and happily explained to us how to eat a Japanese Breakfast. In my opinion it was too big but was very delicious. It's 15-20 min to the train station.

This hotel was an interesting experience as traditional Japan but the price for one night was quite high considering what we received & if you only have one night there you get less than 24Hrs So I don't think I will choose this hotel next time.

Japanese-style room was spacious and cozy, futon beds were exactly what we wanted to experience. Ryokan was easily accessible by foot from the train station and food services along customer service were great. Private bath in our room was fun to use, while looking at dark spring night with wind howling and water drops falling, while the river roared below the ryokan grounds.

The location is superb - on a small main road near a bus stop; the river runs right by the hotel so lovely views; superb evening meal and breakfast; comfortable room with view over the river. There is a 'family' onsen which is private, and a large, stylish indoor communal onsen in a conservatory with lovely views.

The description of the room included 'shared bathroom'. There was a toilet with 3 cubicles on our floor, but the only shower we could use was in the onsen, next to the pool.

- Beautiful old building in a peaceful and serene natural environment with traditional decor, felt like a Ghibli movie. - Room was large with a lovely seating area overlooking the river and complimentary green tea. - Good location, walking distance (10 minutes) to a town area with convenience stores, cafes, restaurants. Bus stops 2-4 minute walk from front door to Hakoneyumoto and Odawara stations as well as Owakudani volcanic area. - Shop by the lobby selling snacks and ramen till late, drinks vending machine. - Instruction manual included in English on how to use the baths, set up the futon bedding etc. - Privacy of in room bath was lovely and leisurely. - Breakfast was traditional and DELICIOUS.

- Check in at 3pm with check out by 10am when you are only staying for one night felt quite rushed and not as good value for money at almost £200 for one person for less than 24hrs. - RE above, you also do not get to spend too much time in your private bath as it is open air and once it gets dark out bugs start to fly in. It is also not as private as you would hope when you open the window blinds, as there is another building with a path around the hill across from you, so people may be able to see in. - The futon was quite thin/hard, I would layer two if I stayed again.

This is an absolutely gorgeous old property, with the charm and character you don't get from newer accommodation. My room was one of the smaller ones but still a great size and had a lovely view out to the river which means you get the water sounds as background noise as you sleep. All staff were very polite and helpful, particularly there was a kind gentleman working the dinner and breakfast service that spoke English and was extremely helpful in explaining the menu. There is a gift and amenity shop inside, and the property is a 10 minute walk away from the Hakone-Yumoto station so there is really no need to get transport or luggage drop service if you packed light. Included dinner and breakfast were delicious, highly recommend getting a room option that includes meals. A robe, toothbrush, hair dryer and shampoo/soap are provided so no need to bring along. The baths themselves do show their age along with the rest of the building, but are large enough to accommodate guests comfortably.
