Most of the experience, specially staff.. The nice old fashiondness, the position and convenience, the space, the atmosphere.
The breakfast was not good. Specially poor for non cooked breakfast guests. We dined after the coach passengers had. For each of our THREE breakfasts we needed to ask for replenishment of basics, like bread, milk, yoghurt and cuiosant. The tea became stale, the toaster seemed a disaster zone. It seemed obvious that the breakfast staff were working too hard (short staffed) and no place to dispose of used plates 《a trolly?). Overall though NO COMPLAINTS..

Spacious and comfortable reception area. The breakfast was great, with lots of choice. Staff were lovely. We visited during storm Floris which resulted in a power cut in the hotel for around 7 hours. The staff handled this amazingly given the circumstances. Many staff were on days off and came in to help!! In what was a very stressful situation for staff, nothing was too much for them. A special shout out to Alan, who kept us updated and made sure to help in any way he could! Another special shoutout to Isla who was faced with this all on her very first day. Despite this, she always had a smile on her face. The staff worked their socks off to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possibly. Thank you again guys!

Strathpeffer is a nice location and the hotel is right on the square. The bathroom felt like it had been recently redecorated and the shower had good pressure and temperature. Staff were perfectly friendly and helpful. The price was good. Overall, I’m quite satisfied and had a decent stay.
I don’t know if it’s because the majority of the hotel’s guests are elderly (this seemed to be the case), but I found the hotel very warm and left my room’s windows open the whole time (early April). The bed was ok, not super-comfortable. The food is fine, but very much gives the impression of being straight out of the microwave, and there is limited choice. Breakfast is pretty bog standard.

The hotel was full of character with a spectacular staircase, pleasant staff and a relaxed atmosphere. When we arrived at our room me initially had a small issue with the TV which was attended to immediately by a highly proficient technician who fixed to issue and gave us a few tip about the local area. The breakfast was also an enjoyable experience with a good selection and like the bar, a similarly convivial atmosphere. Great for parking too.
We liked everything about the hotel but as a minor area for possible improvement I would say that the rooms are possibly in need of upgrading a little. However, I must stress that this is a minor point as the room was fine and we enjoyed staying in it.

Great staff, very helpful but overworked. See my negative below.
We were advised by very good staff to avoid 7am and 8am breakfast because of coach parties. No problem we came down at 8.30 to find half of food missing, had to ask for coffee mugs and cutlery, no tables reset! The food was cold and had to ask for plates, none left in the turned off plate warmers? This was unbelievable considering there was still an hour of breakfast left to go. And it’s not surprising really when you have 3 young girls with no leadership trying to maintain a breakfast service.

Lovely stay at The Highland Hotel by compass, The hotel is a grand hotel with very traditional Scottish entrance with a beautiful staircase leading to the bedrooms that are very clean and modern and they had a different feel to the traditional hotel seemed like going back in time when you left your room. We really enjoyed our stay. Staff were friendly and polite. We had dinner at the hotel £20 for 2 course or £25 for 3 course, food was lovely fresh and hot. Breakfast was self service but not much instruction on where the plates were for the cook breakfast you were left to your own devices.
When booking dinner reservations there was no price given and reception was keen to get us in for dinner but seemed relucted on giving us a price, We were given a menu but no price and had to ask a few more times for the price on food. When getting drinks from the bar, the bar staff informed us that the bistro does really nice food outside of the hotel, I was a little shocked that the staff were promoting other restaurants and not their own as the food at the hotel was delicious . More instruction on Breakfast to were the plates were as some guest were using side plates for the cooked breakfast. Would of liked fresh tea and coffee throughout breakfast, but this was also self service and was fairly 'Strewed' so not great to drink

This hotel is nice. The staff are good. The evening meal was good and the breakfast very good too. Room was comfortable and clean. Bed was comfortable.
Some judgemental guests!!! Not the hotel's fault as such, but obviously a certain type of person (not even Scottish themselves) view it as a prestigious place for that area. However, no one should be judged by appearance (my husband has tattoos), no matter how inferior you may feel they are!! It did kind of put us on edge.

Nice hotel in a small town 30min away from Inverness. It looks old, because it is, but the room is really nice, the bathroom was modernized. Big soft towels were a plus. I was afraid because of so many critics saying it had mold, infiltration and other structural problems, but I haven't seen any of these.
The lift is a bit to old, it can get you stuck. One of our beds was really unstable, but it held through 2 nights. The town is so small that it is not easy to find food late in the night. We were told that it was impossible though, despite the Chinese restaurant, but there is actually a nice Cafe behind the Hotel that serves food until quite late.

On arrival the reception staff were friendly and efficient as were all the hotel staff members throughout our short stay. The hotel is very old and decorated in the stereotypical Victorian Highland style, lots of tartan and clan memorabilia. A great location as a base for discovering this part of the highlands. Unfortunately and this is no reflection on the hotel, there is a lack of local pubs in Strathpeffer (nearest being in Dingwall) and just a few cafes and restaurants. Food at hotel was reasonable and priced accordingly. If looking for a quiet getaway this is perfect.

I love this hotel in particular and the entire hotel chain for its atmosphere of the beginning of the XX century combined with some Victorian vibes (especially if you are lucky to stay at the same time with coach tours and tourists of the average age 65+). Good facilities to spend evening in library or hall with a pint playing billiards or board games. The standard room is a little bit small but still there is everything you need there perfect for 1-2 nights.
The breakfast is poor, although it serves quite early. However, if you have time, the best option would be to have a breakfast in the cafe in front of the hotel starting from 9 am.
