-Spacious rooms, very clean linen, a real suite, large bath tub, plenty hot water, extra heats (oil heater, hot water bottle, free firewood and lighters, towel warming pipes), beautiful garden view, wide windows - Breakfast....more like brunch!! Tasty and filling....wife's favourite was the blueberry pancakes.....mine was the Soups of the day with jeqe (Zulu steam bread)!! - Dinner...the restaurant well laid out, friendly guests, fireplace throughout the facilities, expansive and clean toilets......gourmet burgers really gourmet!!:-) - Chef Ndumiso needs a 1000 feathers in his cap!!! Freshly baked and cooked meals.....scrumptious and to die for.... - Servers: all polite and most helpful ....Nonjabulo (so knowledgeable about different mixed drinks, hard working and never shows fatigue!! Nelly and Sindy most warm and pleasant, makes the meals worth eating!! - Reception: Thembeka ALWAYS ready to assist with any request, always with a smile and courteous....the staff are the real assets to Halliwell Country Inn - Lynn and Anne went out of their way to get their team work round to setting up the perfect 34th wedding anniversary during dinner and breakfast....thanks for the flowers and chocolates!! NIX!! Wish we could have afforded to stay for AT LEAST a week!!

Halliwell is the perfect place for us to spend time together and meander through the Midlands. We love the cottage style room with its comfy bed and fireplace. The breakfast is tasty and we always treat ourselves to a restaurant meal one or two of the nights. Our favourite is the lamb shank or lamb curry. The manager and Tara made our stay extremely welcoming.

It would be great if residents were allocated their own parking space. After one particularly long day of meandering, we arrived back to find that all the parking was taken by people using the restaurant. It was raining and we had to park at the far end which caused our car to get stuck in the mud over night.

Lovely stay overall. Great service from staff. Great location. Bed was so comfortable. Dinner at hotel was rather pleasant.

Really nitpicking here, but the lighting in the bathroom and living area could be looked at. There seems to be a lack of personal touches in the hotel. Not once during our stay was the fire in the lounge ever lit, despite the temperature warranting such. Earlier reviews mention homemade rusks in the rooms, none were present during our stay. There is also no form of hotel guide in each room, describing hotel policies, facilities etc.

We enjoyed the relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere at this charming old world country inn. The surroundings are tranquil and picturesque and the main old building has so much character. A few improvements and extra touches would make it so much better. The lady who served in the bar was also doing other duties such as waitressing, and so on occasion we had to look for her. She was however very friendly and helpful. A greater variety of drinks is needed in the bar. They had no sherry other than Old Brown, and no port. The menu is rather limited and could be expanded with some interesting seasonal or daily specials. I was looking forward to the lamb shank (for a few days before our arrival as I’d had it before) and it was out of stock. Food is good, freshly prepared and comes with lovely vegetables. Breakfast is very good. The chef is a master at making perfect poached eggs! The interior of the main building needs better lighting in the form of warm white bulbs. A simple fix. They use cool white bulbs and some are missing. This greatly detracts from the ambiance and makes it dingy and lacking in a warm atmosphere. Some more flowers and foliage from their gardens all over the hotel would be a lovely touch. We love the fireplaces in the rooms and that they supply firewood. Overall a lovely place and such excellent value for money! We look forward to our next visit!

An overall fantastic experience. The food portions were perhaps too generous, although we managed. Staff were obliging and helpful. The showers were great, plenty hot water and great pressure. Visited in Winter, and the fire and heater were fantastic. The garden chalets have a beautiful morning view across the valley.

Pillows too puffy. Access roads from the highway are gravelled. Rather go through Howick up the tarred road and avoid the rough ride and dust.

This was our third visit in less than a year, so that says it all! We love Halliwell Country Inn. Old world charm with a very relaxed vibe. We enjoy staying here when we have to be in Pietermaritzburg for work. It was a chilly Midlands afternoon and evening. There were fires in the bar and restaurant and a fireplace in the room with ample wood supplied. Electric blanket on the bed although we didn’t use it. We had delicious melt in the mouth tender fillet steak for dinner.

Lots of character, beautiful old building, lovely views, on the Midlands Meander. Lovely pub and restaurant. Our waitress Nomfundo, who served us in the pub and restaurant was excellent. She was very friendly. She made a fire in the pub at our request. Anne, the manageress/receptionist was also very friendly and helpful. The dinner was very tasty and good value for money. There were many breakfast options available to order from an a la cart menu. Suites are spacious, have patios and fireplaces, with plenty of firewood supplied.

Dinner is from 17h30 until 19h30. Last order 19h00 /19h30, which is far too early. I booked 2 suites for the same price. One room had a comfy 2 seater couch and a king size bed, while the other had 2 wicker chairs and a double bed. (This room, no. 6, did not look like the photos I’d seen when I booked.) The bed was comfortable however.

We were warmly welcomed upon arrival at Halliwell. All staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Breakfast was included and something to look forward to each morning. A farm-style type meal in a homely dining setting. The surroundings were beautifully tranquil. The bed was super comfy and we had a great night’s rest. The tea, coffee and homemade rusks were a nice touch!

A shower door as opposed to a shower curtain would be fitting.

We had the most relaxing stay ever in the stunning charm of this heritage country inn. The staff are the gems of this place with such warmth and friendliness that we felt at home instantly. The restaurant food was delicious and the fireplaces in all rooms were the highlight. We appreciated the generosity of free firewood and biscuits and rusks in the rooms for tea. We will definitely stay here again as we loved the place.

There was nothing we could fault.

we loved the beautiful buildings and stunning surroundings. We loved the family room we stayed in and the magnificent views. We loved the green gardens and roses and flowers. The breakfast was delicious with a great variety of choices - we ate outside looking out to the langkloof and stunning surrounds and to the sound of frogs and cicadas . The hosts were extremely friendly and warm which made the stay even more perfect.

We loved everything about this property!
