Nestled in an idyllic location- and as picture postcard as advertised - this is a typical English pub - the food was excellent and plentiful and always served with a smile.. the staff we met were great and our room had all the basics needed , not 5star but more than adequate and despite the pub underneath was very quiet - we were never disturbed by the pub noise itself… so very happy to stay here again.

More if a be aware rather than a dislike This is an old pub so expect things not to be modern and perfect- Steep stairs to rooms were a little challenging for me as i have major knee issues and for getting suitcases up/down but not insurmountable… and added to the nature of the pub being “old” . To get to the Friar requires driving to/from narrow country lanes and sat nav certainly can send you down some very interesting routes. If you are wary of driving Cornwalls challenging narrow country roads- which are sometimes barely one lane - this is probably not for you especially coming from overseas - but the trade off is peaceful and quiet location.

I've stayed in the hotel many times, but this time I stayed in the Friar's Rest self-catering cottage. It had everything that was needed. A good kitchen area, comfortable settee, great shower room, large upstairs mezzanine-type bedroom. Plenty of storage space. There was even a complementary bottle of wine and a large bottle of milk in the fridge. Would love to stay here again.

The remote control for the TV set was in need of updating ! So not really anything to dislike. It can get a little noisy when people are leaving the pub, but it's hardly worth a mention.

Perfect location for a quiet weekend. The welcome when we arrived was warm and welcoming. The standard of other staff varied. Plenty of car parking. Wifi worked well. Cooked English breakfast was of a good standard.

The Sunday roast was bland and tasteless. The thin turkey slices would have been more suited to a sandwich. Although the cooked breakfast was served at the table the toast making was DIY and the bread was left in the plastic wrappers, requiring guests to put their hands in each time - not the most hygienic arrangement. A similar arrangement for the milk and yogurts kept in a domestic fridge.

The food was very nice and the staff were very welcoming.

Sadly it was raining when we arrived, I hoped the hotel could do something about it but they said no...disappointing. Also my colleague had to use the ZBed, I think this contributed to his excessive flatulence during the night. Between his gas propulsion and him trying to chat up a girl on tinder who had a strange obsession with squirrels I didn't know where to turn. Certainly not back home as my wife lives there....

Unfortunately we were not told the hours for breakfast although it was stressed we needed to bring the token provided. We came for breakfast at 9.15 to be told after searching for someone that they had stopped serving and we had missed breakfast altogether. I afterwards found a note on the back of the bedroom door in very small print at the bottom of the page with food serving hours

There was a laminated card in the room with lots of information about tokens for breakfast but nothing to say when to come for it. There was no refund

Really lovely property with loads of history and good staff. The owner was amazing and lovely in helping sort an iron, ironing board and an electric fan. The hotel is recommended and I would stay again and wish the owner every success in continuing with the great service.

Personally I found the evening food menu overly garlic focussed with only the dessert not containing garlic. The haddock was floating in the stuff. I wouldn't reduce feedback scores over this however as all food was nice. Personally I prefer black out curtains in the room but again the rooms are absolutely fine and priced well.

This was our second visit to the hotel and our expectations, which were exceeded, were based on the first visit last year. Meals in the evening, cooked by a new chef, were still of good quality and portion size is still on the large side.

First morning breakfast was a little chaotic, as they had a large party of guests and the cook had difficulty getting breakfast out. This wasn't the fault of the hotel but the way in which the large party arrived. I had to complain to other guests who were making a noise in the bedroom corridor after the bar closed.

The best part of our stay was definitely the friendliness of the staff. They were really very pleasant and helpful. Our room was comfortable and quiet. The landlady actually upgraded us to a better room, which was nice. The dinner menu was fairly typical for a pub and our choices were cooked as requested. I would have liked to see more choice of vegetables with the meal options.

The breakfast was not great. The sausages were horrible, very cheap and basically inedible. We saw other people leaving them too. A surprise considering the rural location. I’m sure there must be farm shops locally that sell decent sausages. The bacon was also not the best quality. The orange juice was not the best either. I chose to have scrambled eggs, which were good, and I was able to have gluten free bread, so that was also good. Also the directions to the property need to be changed. The route that is suggested is a terrible road, and is quite dangerous. Fortunately one of the staff told us a much safer and easier route to the main road.

Loads of character as you would expect. The staff were very friendly and the meals were very good. All in all a very good place to stay.

The rooms are a little dated but this is a 12c Inn so there is very little you can do that will be acceptable and not detract from the character of the place. Perhaps guests should be advised how popular the restaurant is, understandably, and be advised to book a table for the evening meal because this is a very popular place to dine out.

What's not to like when you stay in a 12th Century Inn? If you are expecting a luxury hotel don't stay here. It is a wonderful 12th century inn with a comfortable four poster, a view out of the window to die for and a great big tele. The breakfast was delicious and the staff friendly. Yes you do have to go along windy lanes to get there but this is what Cornwall is about .If you have a sense of history ,this is your place. We stayed there on our trip both on the way in and out of Cornwall loved it.
