The staff was super friendly especially the 1 guy with the long hair , let me use the facilities before and after my checkout. Room is clean and cozy, and the bathroom ? It's superrrrrr clean, almost feel bad for showering , location is great for hikes if you are into that. Great view at night/morning too

Not a dislike of the hostel itself but if you are tryna stay in mount cook area better buy food/drinks before heading over as the area has very little food or drinks option.

We had such an amazing stay. Great staff, exceptional location and comfortable accommodations to say the least. The main recommendation is to buy groceries before you head into Mount Cook since there's a full kitchen if you want to cook. 10/10 would recommend and definitely stay here again.

Stayed 4 nights here (3 nights in a dorm) and had a great trip. Well located. Newly done rooms with big single beds which had curtains and plenty of plug sockets. The place has just been refurbed so everything felt in good condition. Staff are really friendly. Sauna is a lovely touch. Free tea / coffee / peppermint tea = more nice touches.

A few minor teething problems that can easily be improved: - there are no bins in the rooms - the shower door upstairs didn’t have a lock - more kitchen utensils are needed because when busy, you sometimes had to wait for kitchen stuff - more seating areas are required both for chilling and for eating. People struggled to find a seat at times - the provision of soap dispensers in the showers would be well received, particularly for the price you are paying

Awesome location. Very well maintained. One of the best hostels I have stayed in. The highlight for me is The deck for night view of Mt Cook is incredible.

The staff were very friendly. The facilities were great - complete with towels, hot showers, toilets, extensive kitchen and warm rooms. Parking was available and close to the property. There were laundry facilities and you can buy laundry detergent from a vending machine. There were extra blankets when needed. Lockers were also provided in the room (we were staying at a dormitory). Can bring your own padlock. There was also a drying room. The views were exceptional. The design of the house was really nice. The view was 10/10.

The walls were quite thin so we can hear people walking, talking and can hear our neighbours quite well.

We stayed at Haka House Mt Cook on 14 June 2025, and it was such a great experience! The receptionist who checked us in was incredibly warm and welcoming — it really made us feel at home. Our group of 8 stayed in the same bunk room, and it was clean, comfortable, and perfect for us. The facilities were a big highlight — we loved the mini playroom with pushball and the cozy book corner. And of course, the view of Mt Cook was absolutely spectacular — like waking up to a postcard every morning! The house was warm and toasty inside, which made our winter stay even more enjoyable. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Mt Cook!

We stayed at Haka House Mt Cook on 14 June 2025, and from the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. The guy at the reception was super friendly and welcoming — such a warm-hearted person who made check-in smooth and easy. We stayed in the 8-bunk room all together, and it was perfect for our group. Cozy, clean, and just what we needed after a long road trip. The facilities were great — we especially loved the little play room with pushball (so fun!) and the quiet book-reading corner. But honestly, the real highlight was the breathtaking Mt Cook view right outside. It was absolutely stunning — like waking up inside a postcard. Highly recommend staying here if you want comfort, fun, and one of the best views in New Zealand!

We love everything

It was the most affordable housing in the area. Considering it was a bed in the 8-bed dormitory room, they made the room as comfortable and functional as possible. Overall the facility was very clean and well maintained. They also have a drying room to dry your clothes after just washing (they have dryers but if you want to hang dry). Also it was very convenient to pay for washer and dryer by scanning QR codes on the machine and by Apple Pay. No need for coins.

The pillow was too high so it was a bit uncomfortable to sleep on. The price for a bed was about the motel room price in other towns but every private room option here near Mt. Cook is expensive so it was still the best option.

Haka House suited us as we wanted to spend our tourist dollars on activities not accommodation and restaurants. The room was small and we had to share bathroom facilities however the price was right for us. We bought groceries in Ashbuton on the way and prepared all meals in their impressive kitchen. There is a small fridge in the room and several in the shared kitchen facility. If you want a little luxury and incredible views of the mountains, the Hermitage Hotel is located within easy walking distance (good coffee and a shop that sells souvenirs and some provisions). Check out the tourist information centre as it’s excellent to learn more about the area. The guy at the front desk organised our helicopter flight up to Mount Cook (exceptional). Highly recommend as long as you are happy to share the facilities.

Haka House has the warm feeling of comraderie and felt almost like being in college again. And that was 50 years ago for this solo traveler. I had not stayed at a hostel in 45 years (in Asia), but I found this to be a very pleasant experience. The facilities are clean and attractive, And you cannot beat the location in this gorgeous mountain valley near Mount Cook, Tasman Lake, and the Hermitage resort, where I splurged for two delicious buffet breakfasts and a dinner at the Alpine Restaurant (which has many vegan food choices). By staying at Haka House, I was able to keep my 2-night lodging cost nearly US$700 less than staying at the Hermitage.

You will need to have a small padlock for the storage bin in the shared bunk-bed rooms.
