The breakfast selection was quite limited (very little fruit, most often missing things and a poor selection all around), and the staff were confused every time I ordered an expresso, eggs, etc. I got the food but was told, "this is not included, so we'll be extra". I never ended paying extra which would have been ridiculous. I suspect this is just a training issue but I would go out for breakfast next time I stay.
The housekeeping staff seems to forget that at 7am on a weekend, I don't want to hear them banging around or management is overly strict on the hours.

We had a brilliant stay at this hotel, we were travelling from Scotland to Devon breaking up the journey with our two children and dog. The hotels facilities were great, large lovely pool which the children loved after a day in the car! The hotel advertises itself as dog friendly and we found it to be one of the best we have experienced when travelling with our dog. He was welcome throughout the hotel and grounds. The golf course itself was lovely for an early morning walk and the local town was incredibly pretty. We are staying again on our return journey to Scotland.
The only downside on an incredibly hot day and night was that our room was very warm, no air conditioning and no fans available. With four people in a room and a dog it made for a slightly uncomfortable night.

Breakfast - Good. The layout/service appears to change however everytime i stay. This time it was buffet one day and waitress service the next Room - Excellent although could do with a refresh in the bathroom Staff - Always friendly, helpful and obliging. Waitresses at breakfast are always cheerful and smiling. How anyone can be that pleasant at 7.00am in the morning is beyond me!
Bar - Poor. Lacked staff. only one person on duty despite there being what appeared to be a society golf day. Ran out of glasses so we had to wait for them to be cleaned and then the beer ran out. The only person serving then had to change the barrel. Bar menu - Needs to be refreshed more often. Dosen't change enough External decor - showing its age and could do with a touch of paint.

Superb room. Huge comfortable bed. Great bathroom with Elemis goodies. Lovely bar with amazing views of the immaculate grounds. Everywhere so clean and bright. Evening meals good. Wonderful setting and facilities outside.
Reception was very disappointing. Bar staff when we first arrived appeared untrained. Breakfast extremely disappointing. Continental no cheese or cold meats, etc. Just very little boring fruit and only plain yogurt. Bacon very hard and tomato undercooked. Shame there was just one bottle of water in the room for our whole stay, especially in view of the hot weather. Fortunately we had brought some with us.

Love th easy access everywhere to water. Good to have a fridge in the room. Peaceful, quiet room and everything nearby. Sometimes a big hotel with lots of facilities can be very spread out, but we found everything to be nearby and easy to access. Recalled enjoyed the pool, sauna and stem steam room facilities. We used the electric charging point and it was excellent too. As it’s still early days with our electric car we were a little bit anxious about how this would work out, but everything went really smoothly. Really impressed. Next time we will bring the golf clubs!

We stayed for two nights and three days - and it was a fantastic experience from the very start through to our departure. Everything was beyond perfect. The level of service and attention to detail across the whole hotel and spa was outstanding. We had breakfast and lunch at the hotel - which was very lovely, tasty and good value for money. Each morning we took advantage of the spa facilities by having a little swim, steam room and sauna. Some of the extra special touches we liked - the water taps (still and sparkling) near our hotel room, the Elemis shower products in the room and also the WhatsApp messages from the hotel. Thank you to all of the staff at Portal who made us feel so welcome and provided us with a high level of service for the duration of our stay! It was a true pre Christmas delightful stay.

Excellent value for bed and breakfast. huge bedroom, comfy bed, again, huge! :) great views from bedroom as well as bar area. Free access to pool and sauna.
For a 4 star hotel, TV, slightly out of date, not a smart TV, no netflix, etc. Could be on the wall and bigger, didn't affect our stay. There is no variety for coffee at breakfast, maybe an option to update to the machine that offers customers this, when customers are paying £24 for a breakfast, filter coffee from a jug is quite low class. Cutlery and napkins missing from tables. Bar prices...

We regularly stay at the Macdonald in Tarporley so we know it very well. The property is situated in the heart of Cheshire with beautiful views surrounding the grounds. We booked the exec suite this time as a well needed break after the Christmas chaos and it was truly stunning. So much room and outside space on the balcony, it was truly stunning. I had a treatment at the spa Signature + a full facial carried out by the lovely Laura and I cannot express my gratitude for her service. She is an incredible massage therapist and truly made me feel at ease from the moment we met. Treatments were truly relaxing and wonderful, sent me off into a world of my own. I definitely fell asleep which is exactly what was needed. We had dinner in the restaurant it was absolutely delicious. We had the crab and cheese, main was the steak fritte and pudding was the sticky toffee pudding and crumble - all absolutely delicious. We had the most incredible sleep. The beds are remarkably comfortable
Could do with a jacuzzi installing in the swimming area. It’s surprises me that there’s no jacuzzi but there’s such significant room for one.

Good location, beautiful setting, dog friendly
Breakfast- was very poor. Not enough staff - we went at around 9am and the room wasn’t busy so thankful it was t hectic! long delays on everything due to it being table service on all hot drinks and hot food. Coffee was served three separate times in broken cafetières (which the member of staff told us most of them were broken inside), such a simple fix but coffee wasn’t actually drinkable. Hot food was mediocre at best - certainly not worth the £24 price tag combined with the service. Drinks prices at the bar- we bought two drinks which cost £30+, totally unnecessary and clearly capitalising on chump tax.

Room was very nice and spacious with separate bath and shower which both ran well, bed was massive and comfortable, and to my surprise the food was excellent, hotels can be a bit hit and miss with food but this place is great for Breakfast and dinner, don’t hesitate to book for both, honestly couldn’t fault it, Also all the staff were friendly and would go out there way to help you with anything.
Not much really, being very picky, the tv in the room was small, even that could be because the room was so spacious it felt far away
