Excellent location a comfortable walk from the Mayflower Theatre which was the reason for my visit. Comfortable bed with good room facilities. User-friendly shower. Bought breakfast as an extra and it was an excellent buffet of which all the components were tasty and well-cooked.
The Star is an historic coaching inn so rooms tend to be small and the structure is not that easy to maintain. My window was quite badly rotten so it would not close completely and really needs some work. Older and disabled guests who cannot be allocated a ground floor room may have some difficulty with the stairs some of which are quite steep.

Good breakfast and finishes at 10am which was convenient for me. Central location in the city. Friendly and helpful staff in the dining room, reception and housekeeping! I liked my room and there was a fan in there too which was appreciated. Good sized tv with lot's channels. Comfy bed and the sash windows were nice and convenient as the nights were warm.
A little dated with the old fashioned interior decour. The lift wasn't working at all during my 2 night stay. The bar closes at 10pm which is early for a hotel. Also the shower is my room wasn't that powerful.

The Star was a great one-night, last-minute option for us. We were looking for a budget but comfortable hotel and the Star delivered. Our room was comfortable, the included breakfast was great and on-site parking available for 7 GBP extra. It is very well located near the Bargate, with lots of meal options nearby. The staff were friendly, check-in was straight-forward, and for a price of a little over 57 GBP for two adults with breakfast included, the value was fantastic.
If you've calibrated your expectations appropriately, the Star will not disappoint. Yes, it is probably in need of a little updating and refreshing in places, but I actually quite like these old-school English travellers hotels.

Nice room. Great price for our stay. Perfect location. Friendly staff and great breakfast. They allowed us to store our luggage in between checking out and going to the ship terminal. And the same when we got back on land as we had a few hours before getting our train home. That gave us the chance to explore Southampton without our heavy luggage in tow! I definitely recommend this hotel as a budget stay before cruising. It takes about 5-10 minutes by taxi to the cruise terminal and the same from the train station. Lots of shops, coffee shops, cafes and pubs to choose from.
Just a few too many stairs to climb which can be hard work with heavy luggage in tow!

The hotel is ideally situated right in the heart of Southampton’s high street, making it a perfect base for shopping, dining out, and exploring the city on foot. Its central location means that a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops are just a short stroll away, offering convenience and vibrancy to your stay. While the hotel is a bit dated in terms of décor and facilities, it still retains a certain charm and old-world glamour that gives it character and makes you feel as though you’ve stepped into another era. This nostalgic atmosphere may particularly appeal to those who appreciate classic design and a sense of history. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly throughout the stay, always ready to assist with a smile and provide recommendations when asked. Their warm hospitality added to the overall positive experience. One of the standout practical features is the parking availability, which is a real asset in such a central location where parking can often be a challenge. The convenience of having on-site parking took away the stress of finding a space and made coming and going much easier. Finally, the hotel is well-maintained and clean, which is always reassuring and important for a comfortable stay. Although it may benefit from some modern updates, it delivers a pleasant, nostalgic experience with solid service and a fantastic location.
While the hotel has a nostalgic charm, some of the furniture, carpets, and fixtures feel quite dated and could benefit from refurbishment to enhance comfort and appeal without losing its classic character. The Wi-Fi connection could be slow or intermittent, which might be frustrating

Had an issue the 1st night with the comfort of the bed..duly reported the following morning..the staff were more than helpful..offered to swap the mattress or if that wasn’t possible then they would swap my room..went out for the day and came back to a room swap/upgrade at no extra cost and our bags had been put into the new room..the staff are more than willing to go the extra mile for their guests..catering staff are exceptional and remember what guests had to drink each morning at breakfast and our toast orders as my partner is a pain with how she likes her toast and they got it spot on for her..nothing was too much or an inconvenience for the staff

The location and that parking was available. The addition of friendly staff and the bar (although, closed very early for a Saturday - when people are wanting a tipple after eating out and before bed).
The signs of which way to go when leaving your room, to get to the reception area wasn’t clear - I don’t think there were any. We often got confused of where to go and ended up elsewhere in the building. The room was extremely far from the reception desk, but that couldn’t be helped. We got to our room and the key didn’t work, so had to walk all the way back with luggage to get a new one.

Paid less than £60 and myself and my partner got a massive room for ourselves. We were on a low level and had the entire floor to ourselves which was lovely. There was a large bathroom and bath. The room was clean as well as towels. We also had breakfast included in the price. The breakfast was lovely and the staff was lovely. Coffee and tea where also great. Not our first stay here and definitely wont be our last.
The room we were in was definitely surrounded by a lot of pipes so there was a lot of nose from that throughout the night. We have stayed in the hotel before and have stayed in different rooms and only experienced this noise in this room. We didn't mind as we know this isn't the standard for the hotel and for having a floor to ourselves and such a nice room it really wasn't a deal breaker for us.
