The owners are very welcoming, they give you a lot of tips for sightseeing and restaurants and you can basically hang around with them in the garden. The area is very safe but everybody uses uber wherever they go anyway. The room was very comfortable, good bed. Part of the bathroom has a milky glass wall towards the hallway but the hallway is only shared by the 3 guest rooms (so no real traffic on the hallway). I noticed water was leaking from the bathroom to the hallway - it can be fixed. However the light on the hallway was on the whole night so bring a face sleeping mask.

Apparently it is necessary to agree the time of breakfast upfront as on my last day, it was Sunday I needed to leave at 8am but there was nobody awake. I felt sorry to wake the owners up to sort out the bill and eventually had to leave without a breakfast. Not a big deal but be aware to sort everything upfront.

The property was well located for my purposes, the room spacious and comfortable and a nice view from the room not the garden. Secure parking is available on the premises and Patricia was very friendly and efficient with the check-in process.

The TV was not connected to the internet, so it did not work. Some of the furnishings are showing signs of wear and tear, Similarly, the floor covering in the bathroom requires maintenance. I did not like the glass wall that separates the public passage from the bathroom, it does not feel private and the passage light remained on until 24:00 which meant the room was not dark enough to facilitate a good sleep.

The Owner was very helpful and friendly, the facility is very nice and secure, the breakfast was good and home like, it was simple to locate the site.

The rooms are 3 rooms renovated inside a private villa, with the shower added in the room, separated from the room and the corridor with opaque glass, that do not block the sun light to the room and the visibility of shades from the corridor to the person in the shower, there was sun light in the room at 5:00 am. The glass walls did not provide acoustic separation from the corridor crating noise from the other visitors until very late at night.

I loved the bed, the shower, and the option of having the bar fridge with access to coffee/tea. The hospitality of the hosts.

The bathroom 'wall' was made of stained glass with visibility to others from the passage. The feeling of insecurity of people being able to 'see' you moving around. Maybe a wall feature on the stain? Out of your control - I come from a quiet neighborhood so the late night traffic and the neighbors alarm going off made sleeping disrupted. I didn't close the window to check if it was sound proof come to think of it.

Fantastic welcome into a beautiful home. The bedroom was large and well equipped. The mattress was very comfortable and pleasing decor plys a nice view over the garden and pool. It is worth staying here just for the exceptional design and architecture of the building. Modern, airy, and full of artwork... The location is in a beautiful tree lined avenue in a very good area of Johannesburg. I look forward to my next visit to Houghton Place.

The house is stunning, very spacious and modern, tastefully decorated giving it a peaceful atmosphere. The owner, Sam, was warm, welcoming and friendly. The garden and swimming pool are lovely and make you forget that you are in a big city! The bedroom is spacious too, the bed is extremely comfortable, the bathroom really lovely and clean and the room has everything you need. Breakfast was delicious and home cooked. I loved their two beautiful labrador dogs too.

no fault of Sam but the water was not working in the Houghton Estate for 2 days. so showers and toilet were difficult! again at no fault to the owners

I loved the relaxing atmosphere, the open space concept of the house is beautiful. my room was very comfortable and clean. I had a nice bathroom and even a small minibar, which was great! it is located in a safe area and I felt very safe there. the staff was lovely, especially Pat. the beautiful pool and garden invited to relax, loved the dogs, very cuddly 🥰and the welcoming hosts Sam and Jan were awesome! very helpful if I had any questions about Joburg or tours. I really enjoyed sharing a glass of wine with them in the evening and having interesting conversations. it just felt like a home away from home, definitely would recommend booking here. thank you so much for everything Sam and Jan!

there is nothing to dislike here.

We enjoyed the spacious house, it was clean and cost. The location within the city is very good, safe and beautifully green.

The shower takes a long time to get to temperature but I don’t feel this is something Sam can change. The room was fully equipped with shower and bath so we had nothing to complain.

Houghton Place is a perfectly situated guesthouse, in a quiet neighborhood close to some of the best restaurants in the country, art galleries, and other interesting places to go. The owners and staff are welcoming, the breakfast excellent, and the sound of birds at dawn the perfect way to wake up!
