The staff were really welcoming and helpful. They were happy for me to check in at 9.30 pm and have breakfast early one day so as to be ready for an excursion. They explained that a TV company was filming at the dar all week and I had the option of moving to the other property they run if I wish. I chose to stay put. I can still hear the director saying, "Action!" The staff gave me a lot of useful information and arranged excursions for me to the spectacular Roman sites at El Jem and Dougga. That gave me the chance to see a lot more of the country. Youssef and Zainab were my guides for both trips, which were very enjoyable. The dar is located in the medina-Tunis's old town. When the TV cameras weren't running in the evening, it was really peaceful and quiet. Some of Tunis's historic sights, such as the royal tombs, are a short walk away. There are several restaurants and markets within walking distance. Tunis's 'new town' is a 25 minute walk away through the medina; the Bardo Museum and Carthage are further away. The views of Tunis from the roof terrace were great! A very big 'Thank you!' to Khaled, Omar, Youssef, Zainab and everyone else for making my stay so memorable.

I think visitors should know that the dar doesn't serve a massive continental breakfast. The croissants, eggs, yoghurt, biscuits, bread and coffee were fine for me. It didn't matter anyway-most restaurants I visited served meals in very generous portions, so I was soon full up. I slept OK but the bed was quite hard.

The hotel is in a central position, but one side street, so it is very quiet. The building is just gorgeous. Some of the rooms have four poster beds or beds with a carved and painted wooden frame. There is a very big main room to hang out if it is too hot to lounge on the various terraces. At breakfast, all the guests share a table, so it is easy to connect.. I was very lucky because I met very nice and amusing people during my stay. Finally, at times, there is a lot of fun stuff going on at the hotel, from yoga on the roof to clay workshop and cooking classes.

The atmosphere is excellent, the furniture is antique and the building is historic. The owner showed us the whole house when we left and it was really nice to see the ambition in the restoration of this old house.

What initially annoyed me was the wrong information about transport. The same thing happened at the airport. Everyone said that people should only take a taxi, which is not correct. It was of course convenient, but it is a minimum to give correct information. For example, there is a train to Beja, but the receptionist insisted that the only way is to go with someone else in a taxi. In this way, a wrong image of the country is given.

Great old building. Its lovely and a unique experience to live in an old manison in the medina. Great cozy common areas, nice rooftop with 360 degrees city room. Room was basic but ok, not luxury room. Good lightening from lamp at bedtable. Price for a historic house reasonable. Great breakfast in historic common room. Very friendly owner and also very nice guy from night shift who helped me to get a taxi to airport Easy to find with google map

For internet, I had always to get signal of wifi at rooftop, thereafter it worked in common area but not in.my room which was a bit away from common area. Takes some time (30 min) to walk to city ,(avenue Habib Bourghiba), must walk through the basar or otherwise even longer walk along the street. Basar is very dark at night in some corners. But owner said its safe in the empty and dark basar at night

Dar Hayder is like a little gem hidden on the outskirt of Medina. Beautiful inside , gently renovated to preserve amazing history of this place . Very easy go get to and from, friendly helpful staff, when we stayed place was very quiet but when we needed a help there was always someone there. Lady who looked after breakfast and in general she clean the whole place was very friendly and accommodating. When we asked her if we can east outside, she with a smile on the face moved our breakfast to the outside space. Highly recommended.

A sumptuous 17-18th century palace located in a popular neighbourhood of the Medina, near the wonderful Zaouia Sidi Kacem El Jellizi-Musée de la Céramique, It was restored to its former splendor by the Hayder family and is run by them with lots of love, competence and hospitality (and good english, french and spanish knowledge). The living units around the patio have typically a shared living room and kitchen and two very confortable bedrooms with own bathrooms and all the usual amenities such as air conditioning, wifi, TV. an own historic hammam onsite and a breezy rooftop terrace with a glorious 360° view of the entire Medina and most of Tunis till the sea. In the night you can do great stargazing, the sky is clear and not light-polluted! Then again the palace by itself is worth a long visit, each room vaulted and decorated differently with arabic stucco reliefs and writings, and of course the vibrant and colourful glazed tiles covering the walls, all handmade, all antique and unique. Walking through the galleries of the patio and the rooms is like visiting a museum, just that it is yours, for the duration of your stay. A truly magic experience, which you will want to extend or to repeat!

The only momentary downside was that during my stay there was still restauration ongoing in the hammam, so it was not yet functional, the kitchen was used by the workers, and the floor level of the inner courtyard was not accesible. Some of the pieces of the antique furniture were not yet refurbished, this is being taken care of.

Lovely staff all around: Omar, Khalil, Mohammed and Yasmin were really helpful, nice and friendly. Welcomed us, gave us tips and helped us with whatever we needed. The breakfast was delicious (especially the croissant with dates!) and there was always water available. The house is incredible and rooms are super well taken care of.

The only thing it would have been nice to have was a mat in the bathroom. But that is a small detail.

This is a fantastic and unusual house to stay in, which rapidly became a home due to the kindness and consideration of the staff. The roof terraces are amazing and the decor unforgettable. We liked the area, with a variety of shops and market.

The Dar is a hugely impressive interior but needs some renewal works to fulfil its potential. It does require some modernisation to meet contemporary expectations, however it posseses an outstanding atmosphere.

it’s a traditionally designed place and has relatively good facilities. water was hot, room was nice and comfortable, the terrace has a great view of the city and good to watch sunrise, sunset. owner Jamil was very nice and joined us for some nights for dinner. also left us to the airport while leaving. helped get a rent a car.

breakfast was decent but not having as much as a hotel. difficult to order food online and when we did we had to pay 20 dinar for delivery. other facilities I had to ask for it like fridge, kettle etc but when since I asked early I got it when I came so I was satisfied.
