We arrived late evening after a 4 day hike. So we were tired and hungry. So accommodating with 5 minutes till kitchen closed the gentleman took our order so we would get some food, which they very kindly brought up to the room for us. Lovely building full of character, super friendly staff especially the young man behind the bar on Tuesday evening. The bed was comfortable, a bit noisy from road outside but that was to be expected. It was hot but there was a fan in the room. Breakfast was lovely. Good parking.

The only niggle we have was cleanliness of the room. Hair all around floor by towel rail in bathroom, dusty window ledges, cobwebs and could see dust marks where it had been hoovered to. Also lack of housekeeping, we put our card out both days to have cleaned but it wasn’t done. Had to go down and ask for clean towels and milk. Then again later for toilet roll. These are the only things that let our stay down. But we would still book here again if we are in the area.

The staff were great and the rooms were nicely decorated and very clean. Good amenities and nice hot showers. A really good location for shops and resturants and walks. We ate twice in the pub as the food was great and the portion sizes were decent. Free car park as long as you register your car reg. Lovely historic building and comfy beds.

The only thing that was personally uncomfortable for myself and my partner was the hot room. My radiator was stuck on full blast for half a day and although someone came and fixed it as soon as I told them, which was excellent service, the room was still very hot throughout the night

The property was interesting and it was lovely to read all the history. The rooms were spacious and had lovely decor, onsite parking was a bonus. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Karina the General Manager and her assistant Tito went above and beyond. The food was delicious with decent portions and a reasonable price to match. (Better than a 4 star property 10 minutes down the road, where we went for a wedding.) Would highly recommend this property to anyone who wants somewhere a little quirky in the area.

Loved the history of the place, good atmosphere in the public areas. Superior room very large and a bath as requested. Convenient from the station.

Paid extra for a superior room, would not recommend this as very cold upstairs in the main building, once you got past the fire doors. Radiators in the corridors were cold. Bedroom was too cold to get undressed never mind use the bath. One towel rail and one radiator under the window nowhere near enough for this size room in the winter. After asking twice at reception a heater was provided and we were able to stay warm. Everything in need of thorough clean and TLC.

Great old coaching inn. Good food in the pub and great service all around. The rooms are as expected in buildings of their age but every effort is made to make them suito-modern. Since the current structures date back to 1700’s there probably all manner of ghosts lurking around but not to worry if you have nothing to hide. Conveniently located to High Street and to the Kennet Avon Waterway with a walking path going in both directions and locks and boats going to and from.

The staff team were absolutely amazing. Friendly and professional. The Bear is dog friendly which meant our dog could join us for the break. The hotel is in an excellent location for exploring Hungerford and the West Berkshire countryside. Our room was nicely decorated. Plenty of power and USB points. The bed was so comfortable and we had a great sleep.

When we arrived the cups in the room were dirty with dried on coffee at the bottom. This was immediately remedied by the staff when I raised this. Hot water pressure in the tap was very low. But we were in no rush when using the sink so wasn't a big problem. Overall these two issues did not in any way detract from a wonderful stay at The Bear.

Room was beautiful, spacious, clean and very comfortable; it was very warm however (amazing weather) so air con would have been very welcome; also quite near the road which impacted on noise since we needed the windows and door open in order to sleep. Breakfast was fabulous - one of the best I've had - very good indeed! Staff were all polite and welcoming. Little garden by the river was nice too however this was closed off for an event.

Temperature in the room - we needed aircon/fans.

Loved the nice room with the river running under the window. Loved the spotlessly clean bedding. Enjoyed the outdoor seating area. Food was good. Parking was good.

Their kitchen suffered an electrical problem on our second day , which although not something the staff could control, it meant food was not available on our second evening or hot food available for breakfast on our last day. The manageress has said she will refund the cost of the breakfast which is a kind offer which I appreciate but I do feel the staff on duty could of been more apologetic and helpful at the time. Simon was the only staff member who personally seemed understand that we were disappointed.

Period pub,nice looking inside and out.great location,lovely looking town with mixed shops( antique and modern)great room with ample space.iron and board provided,big tick as when you take a shirt out of a case it looks like a twisted knot.the.staff where very warming,and helpful.good choice of food on the menu,and the breakfast was excellent.we chose this pub/hotel for Riat 2025 and would would chose again for the venue,big thank you to the head of house.

Lovely warm and comfy room, staff were lovely and friendly. Was in a perfect location for me as I was there for work and the free parking was a bonus

Broken toilet roll holder, broken shower, no water pressure. Cobwebs all over the ceiling and hanging down so could do with a feather duster! Would be a nice addition if there was a little fridge in the rooms. Small things but would make it more worth the cost of the stay.
