We had a great time at the Trout Fly Guesthouse. It was clean, the Rooms look really nice and are well equipped, the Bathrooms are modern and roomy and the hosts are just great people all around. The trout fly is located in the middle of Port Ellen, close to some good Restaurants and bars and the 4 (soon to be 5) southern distilleries on islay. The price per night is (as anywhere on islay) not exactly cheap, but since it includes a phenomenal breakfast I'd say it's pretty fair and might even be the best value for money you're going to get on the island.

We had a room with a separate bathroom - it's the only one, the other rooms come with ensuite bathrooms - which was alright and overall didn't really bother us, but is something to take note of when booking a room. Also, the mattress only gets a B- for comfort. It's alright, but not the best. Overall I can wholeheartedly recommend the trout fly to just about anybody looking for a good stay on islay.

Location is perfect, especially if traveling with public transport, near the port, near the restaurant, and a minute from the bus station. Room we stayed in is beautiful and the whole property is nicely decorated and cozy. And the breakfast was exceptional - both savory and sweet :) But above all it is the host that made our stay unforgettable and delightful as it was. Niall, thank you for everything :)

The mistake I made - booked too short a stay on Islay

Niall and his family were exceptional hosts. The (vegetarian) breakfast was wonderful, the rooms were cozy and decorated with passion and the bathroom was modern, bright and clean. We felt very welcome in the Trout Fly Guesthouse and had the most wonderful and relaxed time. Our host Niall even saved our day of departure. If we have the chance, we'll be back for sure!

Nothing at all, it was just perfect.

What a wonderful place! First, the location is ideal for walks: 3min to the Ferry (if a foot-passenger), 2min to a couple of restaurants and bars, 30min to Laphroaig, 45min to Lagavulin, and 1hr to Ardbeg (and you can easily hitch a ride back to Port Ellen from other visitors). Easy parking on the street just outside. The place is super clean. The bedroom was a good size, with a well-functioning bathroom; good lighting; beds a bit hard. What made this place fun was Niall, the owner, who is full of great recommendations for things to do, and who cooks a fabulous breakfast (go for the Scottish one!!! No lunch needed!) I loved this place!

Nothing, it was great. OK, maybe softer beds. Otherwise, perfect!

Niell knows everything and tells you all the information you need. He is also a great cook, the warm breakfast was nicely done (although other B'n'B-s might offer more cold options by default). He has a boatload of experience with the ways of working of the ferry company, which comes at handy when the service breaks down.

The room might be tight for some people, however the layout of the house only lends itself to this arrangement.

Niall and Linda are very outstanding host couples and Niall gives me the best hospitality experience from the time I arrive and tell me what I need to spend best of my 4-day in Islay. Niall cooks a very exceptional fine Scottish breakfast and the final day he helps me to plan the itinerary. Niall walks extra miles to help the guests. All the best to Niall and Linda.

Niall is a great, friendly host, he gives useful recommendations for food and things to do, and he makes tasty breakfast. The room makes you feel like home, very clean and comfy. The premise is close to the restaurants at Port Ellen and the local shops. Walkable to the three distilleries trail. Definitely good value for money.

At this price you can hardly ask for more!

Exceptional! A cozy, no-frills guest house within walking distance of three world class distilleries. Our host Niall was simply amazing. He and his family are incredibly welcoming and you almost feel like you are part of the family. They will “get you sorted” with using the local buses, where to grab a bite, who to call for a taxi and whatever else you might be wondering about. Exceptional hosts. The distilleries were great but these fine people will be what we remember most fondly about our stay on Islay.

Great B+B in the centre of Port Ellen. Great breakfast. I really felt like they made sure we got the most out of our stay by great communication beforehand advising us to book the local restaurants and distillery tours in advance. The bathroom was a great size and private.

Our stay at the Trout Fly Inn was memorable. Niall, our host, was fantastic. He cooked the most amazing breakfasts - try the Laphroaig waffles!! He was a fund of knowledge about Islay and looked after his guests so well. The location was brilliant, a short drive from the airport and close to the ferry terminal.
