Excellent location right opposite the cathedral. Very handy to have a car park, though it's small and space is not guaranteed. Spacious if rather plain room, excellent en suite and shower though it took a long time to warm up. Interesting old building. Pub bar does serve reasonable ales, contrary to some reviews.

Room could do with redocrating and a bit of colour / style - a bit disappointing for the price. Breakfast was OK but nothing special. (Stairs and approach to rooms are very narrow and twisty, but I knew about that and it's to be expected in an ancient inn.) Sash window wouldn't stay open, and some cracked glass.

Quaint 15th Century hotel in the middle of St Albans. The floor of my room was not entirely flat, but this for me added to its charm. Comfortable, clean and decent value, Very good location. Would recommend and stay there again myself.

The bathroom is small and cramped - there is a glass shelf above the toilet on which you can bang your head if standing up incautiously. Or knock things on the shelf down the toilet, where they will presumably be devoured by the Macerator, a fearsome-sounding creature which roars after you flush the toilet. The window of my room was too high up to see out of, but I imagine that problem goes back 450 years to when the place was built. All these are minor points - I would stay again.

Lovely period property. My daughter and I were in the twin room at the top. It was a very quaint room. We arrived late in the evening to be ready for my son’s wedding the next day so the location was great. The light in our room was flickering and as soon as we mentioned it at the bar downstairs, it was rectified while we were sitting enjoying listening to the pianist in the bar, having a drink. Both my daughter and I had lovely experience at this hotel. Would definitely recommend.

There wasn’t anything to dislike about the property. We went down to breakfast early as my daughter was doing the bride’s hair at a different hotel so we had to have an early start - the chef hadn’t arrived but it wasn’t a problem as we only wanted a light breakfast so we were still able to eat before heading off.

Property was easy to access and parking was behind the building, free for hotel guests. Because it is a listed building there were quite a few steep steps to climb to get to my room at the top of the building (Room 14), but I was rewarded with a great view of the cathedral, staff were polite and friendly. Really liked the old authenticity to the building, and found the wonky walls and floors added character. The locations was perfect for access into town or the cathedral. Shower was very easy to use with just a push button to start and stop, temperature was perfect.

Because the property is a listed building, unfortunately that means single glazed windows that don't quite shut properly so the road noise was noticeable, and the bells from the cathedral chime the hour throughout the night, so if may be better for some to request a room facing away from the road if possible. I was only staying two nights so wasn't a real issue, but some blackout blinds might help with noise reduction as well as reducing the light coming into the windows in the morning. The toilet flush is very loud due to being a macerator so if staying with more than one person to a room, probably best not to flush the toilet in the night.

A very comfortable night, in a special hotel. Don't expect trendy accommodation but this place made me feel at home. Plenty of floor space to do my morning exercises. Furniture mixed and a bit tatty but better than cool boring modern. Perfectly positioned in the city. Black bartender - forgotten his name - friendly attentive. I came here to rememberr my late wife who lived in St Albans we would come here for a quiet late night drink, so was not surprised by the thrones in the lobby or the suit of armour in the bar.

A light on the dressing table but then there would need to be another socket, and I found three spare in the room which is more than i have found in many hotels

Nice big comfy room as I was upgraded. I checked the room facilities said 'bath' when booking, but on arrival it was just a shower. So they upgraded me to a huge room (8) with comfy bed, sofa, table/desk, chairs, big bathroom with bath. The hotel has a fantastic array of Tudor/late Mediaeval features, so if you like a creaky slightly wonky old timber-framed hotel, then this is right up your alley. There's a nice bar downstairs at the front, and the dinner I have was excellent. The location is right on the high street, close to lots of great restaurants, and two minutes walk from the Cathedral. Parking is free at the back of the hotel, and generally plenty of it available. Lots of wood panelling, a couple of suits of armour, characterful chairs. Very photogenic inside and out. Quiet glazing, despite facing a busy road. Handy space for refrigerating food items in the space between outer and inner glazing in cold weather! Lovely and warm, with responsive radiator in bedroom. Amazing 'guest lounge' next to my room.

I had breakfast once, but it was a bit disappointing, with no sign of pastries, yoghurt, or fruit as promised on the menu, let alone "unlimited". Breakfast wasn't even available on my first morning, unless pre-ordered, as they were too quiet. No evening meals available on two of my three nights either. Lights not very bright in my room, so I was shifting bedside lamps around a bit to work from my laptop. Staff a bit thin on the ground, but I'm sure when busy it is fine.

LOVE this property. Steeped in history in the centre of town right opposite the cathedral. Such great value for money, it’s a little tired inside some of the rooms but wonderful 1470 building with lots of character. Staff are really friendly and go above and beyond with customer service, even telling us some ghost stories! We will definitely be staying again next time we’re in St Albans.

Some of the bedding covers / cushions were a little tired. The broken sash windows in the room could do with some tlc.

Lovely building, great location, it felt very cosy. Old building so lots of quirks which we appreciated. Friendly staff and a good breakfast. We were opposite the cathedral, it's set fairly far back, but it was lovely to hear the bells in the morning, don't worry they weren't rung too early! There is also a decent sized car park which was free, entrance is tight but do able.

Our toilet. As we were on the top floor of such an old building there isn't really a traditional toilet. It was a functional toilet but a bit fiddly to get the hang of, it wouldn't put me off staying again or recommending though.

My first trip to England and I was looking to stay somewhere "old English", not something new and modern. This hotel/restaurant fit the bill. Entire building was like a walk back in time with enough modern touches to be comfortable. Service was outstanding, meals absolutely delicious. And to have all my meals added to the bill to pay at one time made the stay very easy. We had a family room which gave us plenty of sleeping options.

I missed having a small refrigerator to save leftovers but that was a small price to pay for the ambiance.

Fabulous location with parking. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The room was a decent size with everything we needed. Ensuite shower room small but very useable. It is a 600 year old establishment so it is what it is! We had the evening meal in the lovely Tudor restaurant and really enjoyed it. Breakfast was lovely too. I loved this old place, great to see it continues to hold its own !! Would certainly stay again and recommend.

We stayed there with our dog. We originally booked a superior double room but this could not be accommodated because of our dog so we were actually housed in a standard double room. Pointless requesting a superior double because you won't get one with a dog. I asked for a partial refund as I was down graded and that was accepted. They also charge £20 to clean the room, which I think is standard now in a lot of places. More attention to cleanliness needed. The toilet wasn't pristine and wall next to the mirror marked. You really are paying for the novelty of staying in a very old coaching Inn in a perfect location. It wasn't perfect but enjoyed our stay.
