The room was a little dated but this doesnt really detract from their comfort which is good. Great bed and shower. Air conditioning worked brilliantly in a roasting week. bed was renewed every day. I found it a little loud at night but only because I had the window wide open and the nearby bars etc do their glass emptying at the end of their night which was noisy but I used earplugs after 1st night so no problems after that.

I am a T1 diabetic so travel with insulin so in a perfect world I would appreciate a small fridge in the room for my insulin. I also like fresh milk in my morning coffee so it woud be good for keeping that cool.

Location is excellent. Room was spacious (we booked a bigger room than the cheapest, and it was very generous in size), with everything we needed, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean, toiletries smelt great. Really well lit bathroom. Really good value for Winchester. View from the room was probably the best in town, looking right at the cathedral! Breakfast was a really good buffet, it wasn't included in our room price but it was worth the extra payment, better than anything we could have got in a local cafe.

From the outside the building is not lovely. Maybe that's a bit of an understatement, our hearts sank on approach. But once we were inside we were super happy. Personal gripe: I like to use a face washcloth, and these are not provided, bring your own! Otherwise this hotel is a brilliant find

Great location, right in the centre of the city, walking distance from everything Lots of pubs nearby, close to the market on High Street Clean Comfy bed Friendly and helpful staff Good strength shower, situated over the bath A lot quieter through the night than anticipated, as our room was above the car park, facing outwards towards the cathedral. Some rooms have a great view of the cathedral On site bar available late night Some rooms have a bar fridge

While it’s clean, and it’s nice to have the lounge area to relax in near the bar, the finish and decor throughout the hotel are quite tired. The carpets in the hallways are taped together in places, the bathroom finishes are looking like they need a spruce up, and generally the hallways could do with a coat of paint to revive them. Not all rooms have a bar fridge. Breakfast isn’t included in the room rate. If you purchase this separately, it adds another £15 pp (in advance), or £17.50 pp at the time, which makes the hotel less value for money. We ate elsewhere, with lots of choice of more reasonably priced independent and chain coffee shops and independent bakeries nearby

fantastic location, easy to walk everywhere. Car park was large and easy to park. Staff very attentive and helpful and friendly which was refreshing. Room was clean and comfortable, everything I needed was there and throught it was great value. Little disappointed with the breakfast, there were no vegetarian hot options to replace the bacon and sausage and mushrooms would have been a nice addition.

That there was tape sticking down the carpet in the hallways, no vege hot options with the breakfast, no fridge in the room. Room furniture was traditional and probably a little dated but this did not bother me it was serviceable and just a matter of personal taste.

Lovely big room with twin beds for my friend and I. I liked the toiletries provided, there are large lounge areas downstairs we would have liked to have had time to use for a drink and the location is fantastic, bang in the city centre.

We were in one of the rooms overlooking the front entrance of the Travel Lodge and as the room was so warm, we had to leave the window open. There were three disturbances outside throughout the night that woke us up so we didn’t get much sleep at all so that was pretty exhausting. The parking is £15, which is quite expensive, but we ended up parking in the multi storey nearby, which was half the price and free on a Sunday, so ideal for a weekend stay.

The cathedral views cannot be bettered, and the location is really central for just about everything. The hotel staff are very amenable and efficient, without ever being overbearing.

The hotel does what it says on the tin, but a time comes when the age of the bedroom furniture, the bathrooms, the lighting and the doors can no longer be hidden under yet another layer of paint. That time is right now, so I'm hoping for better (and new) things for my next stay. For some reason there is no permanent ramp at the main entrance to help those with pushchairs, wheelchairs or suitcases, which is unacceptable, probably discriminatory and easily rectified.

Good location as close to the High Street. We didn’t leave our car there but the hotel parking looked convenient. Our room overlooked the Cathedral so it was a lovely view and hearing the sound of the bells chiming on Sunday morning was very special. I wanted a cocktail in the bar before going out for dinner and the mixologist could not have been more accommodating. She, and her colleague, went out of their way to make me a delicious cocktail, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The breakfast was not such a success. It was ok but the bread was sliced and could have been better quality. The coffee machine was OK but the coffee was average. These things can happen in a self service breakfast system but it let down the experience a little. The choice of food available was good and the cooked breakfast was fine.

Our standard twin room was a good size, beds comfortable, two chairs in the room, good large tv. The room was clean, with nice clean bedding & good pillows. The bar area in the hotel is a calm comfortable place to sit with a drink or a book, with view of cathedral. The staff…are fantastic in this hotel, every single one we came across was charming, friendly & helpful. Location is brilliant, all the shopping & tourist sites within easy walking distance. Overall good value hotel in a great location

The bathroom could probably benefit from a refurb, but it was clean and well appointed so no complaints really. A fair bit of noise from street below with deliveries etc, but not much the hotel can do about that. Small point…our room 129 would really benefit from extra lighting…standard lamp in the corner perhaps ?

The Mercure Wessex is ideal for visiting Winchester. The location could not be better - our room had a great view of the cathedral (see photo), and the hotel is within very easy walking distance of the main shops and restaurants. The parking is pretty convenient although not free - £15/day. The breakfast is expensive too. But the rooms are large and the beds are comfy. It's worth noting that the cathedral bells on a Sunday morning start around 10am. They sound glorious but not everyone would be a fan.

The Wessex Hotel is a large, efficiently run hotel, part of a chain, which guarantees a specific standard - so you know what you can expect, and I was not disappointed. Especially the breakfast staff was very welcoming and the same goes for the front desk. Breakfast offered the usual range of choices from Continental to English (though I missed the porridge!) , the quality of the products was very good throughout. The real standout positive aspect of the hotel, however, is the location: you are directly next to Winchester Cathedral - you can see it through the breakfast room windows - which is very atmospheric, and it also means that you are in the centre of the city, in easy walking distance to all the sights and shops you might need. Special recommendations: for a relaxed and beautiful evening walk, go to the water meadows, right behind Winchester College, 10 minutes walk from the hotel. And for pubs: I felt myself very well cared for at The Bishop on the Bridge, also very close by. Should I ever come to Winchester again, the Wessex Hotel would be my choice of accommodation.
