This is where to eat, drink and sleep if you are visiting Winchester. The bedrooms are beautifully designed, and the beds themselves so comfortable that you'll have to make a real effort to go down for breakfast. And what a breakfast! I watched my fellow guests and their children tucking in to the Westgate Breakfast, a full English that renders any further meals unnecessary for the rest of the day. My more humble scrambled eggs and bacon were beyond criticism, flawlessly cooked and presented. The front-of-house staff are all welcoming, friendly and efficient. They know they are working in the hospitality industry, and they live up to it. The building has no lift, and stairs to its upper rooms ( 3&4) are steep. Also, make sure to find out how to operate the bedroom heating. I couldn't work it out and had a cold night. So for comfort, value for money, professionalism and surroundings, ten out of ten to the management and staff of the Westgate Pub and Hotel, Winchester. Thank you all.
Not being able to stay longer.

We absolutely loved the authentic charm of the Westgate Hotel. The building has that old English character we adore, but everything inside is clean, tastefully renovated, and very comfortable. Our room had a stunning view, a wonderfully soft bed, and a warm atmosphere. Despite being above a pub, it wasn’t too noisy at all — in fact, having the pub just downstairs made everything so easy and enjoyable. Breakfast was generous and delicious, and the location is ideal for exploring beautiful Winchester. But what really made our stay exceptional was the staff: kind, attentive, full of good humour, and always ready to help or chat. They really added to the warm and friendly vibe of the place.
Honestly, very little. If we had to mention something, it’s that it’s an old building, so you may hear the floor creak or notice a bit of character here and there — but that’s exactly what gives it its soul. It’s not a modern hotel, but we wouldn’t have wanted it to be.

The room was clean and lovely with a double bed, desk (+chair), 2 side tables, a radiator, wall fan and little rail for clothes. There's an en suite small Victorian bathroom with toilet, sink and small shower. The bed was very comfortable and cushioned. There's a kettle on the desk plus tea/coffee, cups, milk and sugar. I was in Room 6 and the view is lovely as you can see the gate and walkway to the Great Hall. The location is perfect for town and also near the train station. For breakfast you get continental and hot options. The homemade bread and farm butter was delicious and paired nicely with the full English breakfast. (There is also vegetarian and vegan options) Staff are kind and very helpful (quick service). This place has lots of character and charm and I highly recommend it.
The only downsides were the uneven slope in the floor which hurt my feet and the showerhead is huge and unmovable, so make sure you turn the shower on before you step inside. Breakfast isn't served until 8am, so might be tight for those on work schedules.

Our room (No 1) was absolutely lovely - spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and a very comfortable bed. The view over the West Gate was lovely too, especially since we had just got married there that afternoon! The pub is great too and we enjoyed out evening meal immensely. Breakfast the following morning was an absolute treat - beautifully cooked, large portions and served by a lovely staff member. At checkout, staff were hugely helpful in suggesting where to park opposite in order to load our suitcase, dog bed and related paraphernalia, even offering to carry them downstairs if we needed them to! But manager Ben Williams was the icing on top of the cake - he went out of his way to be helpful in numerous ways, including giving us directions to a great dog walking spot near the hotel.
The only thing that would stop me staying at the Westgate again is the lack of parking - we had to pay £18 for overnight parking at the Tower Street multi-story - a huge expense on top of everything else - but that's Winchester council, not really the fault of the hotel!

The moment you walk in, you know this is a place that cares about its customers. The way the bar area is set out is lovely, and there are cosy chairs too. Craft drinks too, as well as the standard. Pineapple or mango cider, anyone? Walking into the room, it was obvious that the standards were even higher. Lovely bedding and decor, and even a little homemade sweet treat. Quality toiletries, and fluffy towels. Breakfasts were coked to order and first class. I had dinner there and the food was excellent then too. Very handy for the Great Hall and Crown Court end of Winchester. I enjoyed my stay so much that I stayed for four nights the following week too.
I found the pillows too high and hard, but for my next stay, I asked for a thinner one and it was provided, no issues.

Great location, literally on the doorstep of all the main Winchester attractions. Staff were so welcoming ( thank-you Aidan). Rooms were clean, homely and had all the necessary facilities for a nights stay so I didn’t have to overpack! I was really pleasantly surprised - I am normally a four or five star hotel guest, and this was out of my comfort zone, but don’t be fooled! Well worth booking! Really great hotel and the breakfast was an added bonus! I will be booking again!
Nothing - it was a hot time if year, so the room was warm, but fans are provided which help. If you have mobility problems the stairs will not be for you, but no problem for my stay.

We loved our stay at the Westgate! It’s a beautiful old building full of character above a charming pub serving excellent food. All the staff were very helpful and friendly - they even went above and beyond to have our room ready an hour before check-in time so we could get ourselves ready for the wedding we were attending. We would definitely stay again on our next trip to Winchester.
Nothing not to like! The only small issue is we stayed in late June on a particularly hot weekend, and the room was very very hot despite having the window open and both fans on. But all the great things far outweigh this and it wasn’t the end of the world.

Clean cozy very friendly and helpful staff excellent food and drinks and breakfast included this is the second time I’ve stayed here normally it’s after I’ve been too Boomtown Festival for 5days so it’s my prefect pit stop and rest re boost stay before going home after a manic and crazy festival so close to the city centre and train station I absolutely love this wee gem of a find boutique and rustic style B&B I’ll definitely be back again next year
The only thing I can moan about it is the stairs lol but that’s not the properties fault it’s an old style building

Great place, very convenient location. I was very impressed with the room, we stayed in room 1 it was very large with a good view of the town, the decor was great with some really nice touches. The bed was so comfortable. Love the building itself and the old wonky stairs and floors. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Room was surprisingly soundproof with a busy pub down below. You couldn't hear anything in the room. Continental breakfast looks really good and lovely selection. I had an English breakfast but wasn't that impressed. Fried egg was undercooked and had clear egg white on top, and baked beans were mixed in with other large beans, which was a bit odd. Still pleasant. Minor detail for an overall very positive stay. Would still highly recommend it.

This property is most definitely a 10/10. Beautifully decorated, clean and has the most friendliest of staffs . The bed was very comfortable and we had everything in our room to make for a wonderful stay. We loved the personal touches added to the rooms also. The breakfast was delicious and my husband quite enjoyed a beer or two in the bar below on the evening. It is located close to local amenities and has everything if not more to make for a wonderful stay over. We will most definitely be staying again when we are back in Winchester.
