This is where to eat, drink and sleep if you are visiting Winchester. The bedrooms are beautifully designed, and the beds themselves so comfortable that you'll have to make a real effort to go down for breakfast. And what a breakfast! I watched my fellow guests and their children tucking in to the Westgate Breakfast, a full English that renders any further meals unnecessary for the rest of the day. My more humble scrambled eggs and bacon were beyond criticism, flawlessly cooked and presented. The front-of-house staff are all welcoming, friendly and efficient. They know they are working in the hospitality industry, and they live up to it. The building has no lift, and stairs to its upper rooms ( 3&4) are steep. Also, make sure to find out how to operate the bedroom heating. I couldn't work it out and had a cold night. So for comfort, value for money, professionalism and surroundings, ten out of ten to the management and staff of the Westgate Pub and Hotel, Winchester. Thank you all.
Not being able to stay longer.

We absolutely loved the authentic charm of the Westgate Hotel. The building has that old English character we adore, but everything inside is clean, tastefully renovated, and very comfortable. Our room had a stunning view, a wonderfully soft bed, and a warm atmosphere. Despite being above a pub, it wasn’t too noisy at all — in fact, having the pub just downstairs made everything so easy and enjoyable. Breakfast was generous and delicious, and the location is ideal for exploring beautiful Winchester. But what really made our stay exceptional was the staff: kind, attentive, full of good humour, and always ready to help or chat. They really added to the warm and friendly vibe of the place.
Honestly, very little. If we had to mention something, it’s that it’s an old building, so you may hear the floor creak or notice a bit of character here and there — but that’s exactly what gives it its soul. It’s not a modern hotel, but we wouldn’t have wanted it to be.

Great location, literally on the doorstep of all the main Winchester attractions. Staff were so welcoming ( thank-you Aidan). Rooms were clean, homely and had all the necessary facilities for a nights stay so I didn’t have to overpack! I was really pleasantly surprised - I am normally a four or five star hotel guest, and this was out of my comfort zone, but don’t be fooled! Well worth booking! Really great hotel and the breakfast was an added bonus! I will be booking again!
Nothing - it was a hot time if year, so the room was warm, but fans are provided which help. If you have mobility problems the stairs will not be for you, but no problem for my stay.

We loved our stay at the Westgate! It’s a beautiful old building full of character above a charming pub serving excellent food. All the staff were very helpful and friendly - they even went above and beyond to have our room ready an hour before check-in time so we could get ourselves ready for the wedding we were attending. We would definitely stay again on our next trip to Winchester.
Nothing not to like! The only small issue is we stayed in late June on a particularly hot weekend, and the room was very very hot despite having the window open and both fans on. But all the great things far outweigh this and it wasn’t the end of the world.

Great place, very convenient location. I was very impressed with the room, we stayed in room 1 it was very large with a good view of the town, the decor was great with some really nice touches. The bed was so comfortable. Love the building itself and the old wonky stairs and floors. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Room was surprisingly soundproof with a busy pub down below. You couldn't hear anything in the room. Continental breakfast looks really good and lovely selection. I had an English breakfast but wasn't that impressed. Fried egg was undercooked and had clear egg white on top, and baked beans were mixed in with other large beans, which was a bit odd. Still pleasant. Minor detail for an overall very positive stay. Would still highly recommend it.

I loved the room (no 2) with a fab view onto the upper part of the High Street. I loved the smell in the room, a clean linen fragrance. There was a small glass bottle of fresh milk for hot drinks, so nice not to have the usual UHT milk. Also I appreciated the large bottle of water. Bed was very comfortable. The shower was excellent. The bar staff who greeted me was very welcoming and friendly. I didn't have time for the cooked breakfast next morning settling for a freshly baked croissant, some fruit and tea. It is a great location!
I couldn't honestly complain about anything - my own fault I felt cold during the evening while in my room. I worked it out next morning that the radiator was at zero and as soon as I turned the dial to 5 the room heated up beautifully. I was too late arriving to book dinner at the Westgate as I arrived just after 5pm. I wished I had booked dinner in advance. I was woken up about 2am by loud noises on the stairs. Someone arriving late into the accommodation was pretty thoughtless about the time of night they were arriving back. Again that was not the Westgate's fault.

The Westgate hotel is in a great position in Winchester, the breakfast was really nice (maybe some pastries/croissants could be made available?).
Some guests could struggle a little with the steep stairs, If you travel to the hotel by car be prepared to pay £17 per day to park locally and have to return to your vehicle daily to top-up the 24 hour ticket. As there are a fair number of hotels in Winchester you'd think the local council could come up with some sort of agreement with the hotels for long term guests?(this is obviously no fault of the hotel). You can't even use any of the 'Park and Rides' as cars can't be left overnight.

Location is great, only a few minutes walk from the train station, room was comfortable and clean, breakfast was very good, and the staff were all very helpful, will definitely be returning
The only downside was at breakfast the cleaner was at the bar on her phone with the speaker on talking to the other cleaner about what jobs they had to do, and because it was on speaker the other cleaner was swearing...really not the thing you want to see or hear at breakfast hopefully the can knock that on the head

The location is excellent, being yards from the courts, although (of course) that means that you might get woken up by the early morning traffic. This is a nice little pub with rooms, a minute's walk to the first old buildings, and no more than 5 minutes downhill into the slightly busier parts of town. Nice selection of beer on tap, breakfast perfectly good.
Inevitably, if you're on a road junction, there'll be traffic noise, but that's a minor issue. Breakfast was nice, but a little slow. Stairs are narrow and twisty so if you have mobility issues, you might need to warn them.

The bed was incredibly comfy, the room was spacious and well laid out the shower was fierce and gave you a wonderful experience if you like a forceful shower very cleansing. The room amenities were well laid out with period furniture and the the fan in the room had a timer so very convenient too on a hot summer's day. Incredible service from the staff who were so friendly, and with such a quaint intriguing building in the perfect spot for local foot tours of the city. Absolutely amazing and already missing the wonderful view from the room. Top marks!
Nothing to add here, could not have asked for more during my stay. Perhaps a water cooler in the main corridor might be a nice touch for when hit with late night/early morning thirst if you finish the arguably ample water provided per day, however invariably I should have brought more of my own reasonably speaking.
