The new lad was most welcoming and helpful. The lady who covered breakfast was superb as well. Just one person spoiled my experience of an otherwise brilliant stay.

First member of staff, who I encountered on arrival, studiously ignored me, feigning being busy, which they were, but no acknowledgement made me feel less than valuable. When it came to delivering my main to my room, the less helpful person did so, and when I asked about the dessert I’d ordered, asked when I’d like to have it delivered. (I’d thought it would come with the main, but no worries). I waited almost 45 minutes, went down and only then was advised that dessert was ready. I’ve worked in customer service roles, so I know at times life gets busy, that’s no excuse not to acknowledge any customer.

This is a beautifully, tastefully and recently renovated authentic original British hotel in a lovely village, conveniently located just out of Winchester. The rooms are ample and the bathrooms new and large. Everything works fine. The staff are amazing - all so very welcoming, polite and our new best friends. The dinner menu is wide and varied and contains many local specialties. The Scotch eggs are next level! The Tuna - the TUNA!!! Incredible. The highlight was the very generous serving of fresh Cornish Mussels. Just superb!! The breakfast was also - superb!!! Very generous and beautifully prepared. Much choice and served exceptionally well by wonderful staff.

Nothing not to like. Only thing which comes to mind is that the duvet / doona would be nicer if it was feathers instead of artificial fibre.

The directions were spot on, with parking on site. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a lovely member of staff, who showed me to my room after a short tour and fire escape briefing. The room was cosy and elegant, with gentle music playing, it was spotless, I was shown around it and encouraged to help myself to extra coffee if required. There was a glass bottle of water on the dresser with tumblers, and sealed glasses in the en-suite. It was instantly welcoming. Luxurious velvet black out blinds covered the windows. After a quick hot shower, I headed out to meet friends, but had a key so that I could get back if I returned after hours. There was even an emergency evacuation bag on the back of the door, that had a little torch in it. A soft and comfy bed ensured a good night's sleep. Waking late I panicked a little, but was assured that breakfast was served until 11am. And what a breakfast. Lovely choices and beautifully cooked. This was the least expensive room I could find in the area at short notice, and wow! What a find. Spot on, fantastic. Thank you.

There was an annoying light in the hall that I could see under the door.

Not quite sure what to expect after reading some mixed reviews but when we arrived the bar area was very busy but we were quickly checked in, shown where the emergency escape was then shown to our room on the first floor. Went out for a quick walk in the very pretty village after a long car drive and by that time the bar area was much quieter. Had a couple drinks which were sensibly priced then went for a lovely dinner in the Snug where we could choose from the Snug or Dining Room menus. A very good breakfast the following morning. The room we stayed at was fine and well decorated as was the whole place.

A lack of electrical sockets in the room which made charging a little problematic.

My room was a smaller double room but perfectly acceptable for a single occupancy. The tea & Coffee offerings were excellent and most appreciated. The staff were excellent, my food for the evening meal was good but the portion was too large for me. The breakfast of Avacado etc on toast was very well cooked and presented and delicious.

The tap on my bathroom sink was very loose but still worked ok. The Butcombe Ale which is normally very good had issues and was not drinkable and the alternatives were off as well. Just circumstances I suspect rather than any lack of attention to care.

This Georgian coaching inn just outside of Winchester is a great place to stay if your looking for a base to explore Hampshire. We had a fantastic breakfast and main meals in their own restaurant. The staff are lovely and they made us feel welcomed from the moment we booked in. The room was clean and warm with a very comfortable double bed.

The room could benefit from a bit of maintenance work, but not to the extent that it would put people off staying there, and maybe secondary glazing as it was overlooking the main road, although it wasn't to noisy.

Very friendly welcome, the room was a great size and considering how cold it was outside a nice temperature (and bonus that we could open the window to get fresh air as needed). great shower - pressure and temperature - and nice toiletries. The included breakfast was excellent. We were visiting friends in Hursley so can't fault the location!

The toilet was a bit tricky (cistern had a tendency to run and not refill, so had to wiggle the flush a little). Bed was firmer than we like, but not uncomfortable - would likely suit some people perfectly. Pillows were only ok, but better than we've had elsewhere so again might be perfect for others.

The room was large and pleasant. The bed was comfortable and there were all the facilities you could need (iron, fan, coffee maker and kettle, hair dryer, extra mirrors). There was a sofa in the room with a nice coffee table. All of the ingredients used in the dinner and breakfast were of excellent quality. An extensive breakfast menu was available.

The shower was cold. When we ate in the restaurant the service was very slow, although the food was very good.

Having stayed previously we knew what to expect. Wonderful friendly welcoming hospitality with excellent food ,we dined in the evening and breakfast next morning, all top quality freshly cooked well presented 10 out 10 With snow falling a roaring log fire too what more could one want. All highly recommended.

This beautiful olde worldly gastro pub with rooms just needs a few touches to make it totally wow , carpets and decor and ensuites need updating,but oozes charm and I'm sure that with some effort such could be replaced and updated.

The staff were very friendly and before taking us to our room showed us where the fire escape was for safety reasons. The room was upgraded as we wanted a bath and breakfast included in the price. The room was beautiful very spacious and clean, the ensuite was very bright and airy and had a bath and a separate free standing shower, all the shower gels were in the shower. Towels were lovely and fresh too. The bed was amazing very big and comfy had a lovely nights sleep. Tea and coffee and kettle were available to use too (no milk though lol) I always take my own so this didn't really bother us. We had an evening meal in the pub which was lovely food, the food was cooked to perfection, lots of choice. Our stay was B&B

Nothing really, my only comment is the breakfast would be a lot better if you could choose what you wanted on your plate, for your full English. It was a great selection, but I would have had an extra sausage instead of beans, that's my only moan. Had a cup of tea or coffee, this could have been maybe self service as I do like a few cups of tea with my breakfast, also no fresh orange juice. But overall the food was cooked to perfection.
