The staff were very friendly and helpful, firstly sorting out the free on-street parking permit. The room was clean and tidy. The food was first class, and reasonably priced for the location. The pub decor is amazing, pictures, ornaments, collectables all around, quite quirky, but lovely. It was very busy on our Friday night stay-over, but the service for meals was excellent. this pub is 10 mins walk from the Theatre, and another 5 mins further for the centre of Winchester. Ideal for our trip we would use the King Alfred again. The continental breakfast was adequate for our one night stay.

We loved the feel of the property it was welcoming and warm. The room was clean and comfortable. We throughly enjoyed our overnight stay.

This is not your typical pub with rooms. The dining/sitting area feels more like someone's very inviting and comfortable home. The menu choices reflect this somewhat. Rooms are very comfortable, and the owners take extra steps to make everything more pleasant and comfortable. This was my second stay for all these reasons.

There is little to dislike about the King Alfred Pub. For some, the 10 minute (at most) walk to downtown may be a disincentive. For us, it added to the entire sight-seeing experience.

We had stayed before as have friends, tucked away down a quaint lane in a historic central part of Winchester. Quiet and with a lovely beer garden & with a thoughtful & beautifully decorated interior housing dozens of interesting photos of the past. We love this pub with it's superb rooms, so unique & superior but also far more economically priced than the more obviously situated pubs & hotels. Only a short walk down from the railway station. A hidden gem which we prise & will revisit again and again & again. Excellent welcoming staff, good guest beers & great food.

It's perfect - don't change anything ! The weather - we got soaked !

LOVE this place. The pub is positively quaint, good food (a pint and a pie; how better to arrive in England?), very friendly staff, and tucked away in a residential neighborhood. I'd never have guessed there were rooms here, but boy was mine nice! Very surprising! Beautifully appointed, super comfortable bed with a variety of pillows to choose from, breakfast IN the room, ready for you. I rate any place that has real coffee as top; I had a coffee press (not Nescafe), plus tea, and shortbreads, and a HEALTHY breakfast (sorry, no heavy English one here). Plus two fans (though I didn't need them). Really well done, with all the quaintness of a historically old building (plumbing, stuck windows, fluctuating water temps.) but this isn't my first time around the English block. I expect those things now and accept them as business as usual. Highly recommend this if you're in Winchester.

Lovely room, felt like I was stepping back in history (though not quite King Alfred’s time). Adequate continental breakfast, but if you wanted more there were recommendations and directions to restaurants. A short walk (15-20 minutes) to Winchester central for history, tours, restaurants. A quiet location, even for a pub and a short walk from the train station.

Only negative was the mattress that needed flipping. Too many previous guests sit on the edge so it sloped a bit.

Beautiful old atmospheric and friendly pub, with our own entrance to the accommodation, so we could come and go easily. Great welcome and a homely pub atmosphere with cosy chairs. The room was spacious and full of character, with old wooden furnishings, china cups and a comfy bed. Everything was clean, with a powerful shower in the bathroom. Fantastic arrangements for breakfast - homemade granola, muffins, yoghurt & tangerine in the room suited us perfectly. We’d love to come again!

What a brilliant place. Great location in a quiet leafy area of the city but still only a gentle 15 minutes stroll to the centre. Easy free parking a big bonus too. The King Alfred itself is the quintessential English town pub at its very best. Really warm welcome from the landlady and all staff happy and friendly. Room perfect with a very comfortable bed and superb shower. All in all an excellent find and outstanding value for money. I have little doubt we shall be back.

Brilliant location. Only a short walk into town. There was on street parking right outside with the pub registering our car for a temporary parking permit. The rooms were beautifully furnished, quirky and comfy and the snacks and breakfast bits in the room, with fresh milk in the fridge, were a lovely touch. We didn’t eat or drink in the pub (had other plans) but the team were really friendly and helpful on check in. So good we’ve booked again already for next year!

There was nothing to not like.

Lovely friendly staff, great location and a very comfortable bed. The room was really clean and the food in the downstairs restaurant was great. We enjoyed sitting in the pub in the evenings it had a really friendly atmosphere.

The WiFi in our room was very poor. It was better downstairs but could do with boosting in the rooms. The bathroom had a great shower but the toilet needs attention. The refilling cistern was broken resulting in a loud groaning noise or the constant sound of water running as it refilled the cistern. At one point it stopped flushing and a lovely staff member came and tinkered with it. It’s an old building so plumbing will be a little cranky but this could definitely do with being fixed.
