This was a very sweet place to stay and the location is excellent. We checked in at short notice, arriving late and leaving fairly early. Our host was very kind and accommodating and the contactless check-in system was excellent. The room was delightful and absolutely spotless. The bed was extremely comfortable and we enjoyed an excellent, quiet night's sleep. The bathroom was immaculate and even though we were three floors up, the water pressure in the shower was good.

There was some confusion regarding the need to wear face masks in public areas. We should have messaged our host to clear that up but didn't. We recommend others ask the host if they are still encouraging mask-wearing in public areas when checking in, or carrying a face mask with them just in case that remains the host's preference.

It is our second time back and it did not dissapoint. We choose 23 St Mary's because it is quality, beautiful decor and lovely staff. The location is perfect, just 5 mins walk into the centre. The breakfast is really nice, all cooked very well. There are nice touches in the rooms, with refreshments and nice toiletries. The bed is really comfortable, with nice full pillows. Everything feels clean and comfortable, highly recommend it here.

It was a little warm for us, we appreciate that the heating needs to be on in the winter but it was so warm in the room, it would be nice to have the option to turn it down a bit. Also just personal taste but I don't like the overhead rain showers, no shower cap so I can't get in which is a bit inconvenient. The water temperature won't stay consistent either.

The location was very good. Situated in a quiet street, near a nice park and the bank of the river. We didn't have breakfast there so we can't comment on it. We booked two rooms: the first one was large and agreeable. We found a small table in the wardrobe which ended up being very useful to play cards and put our drinks in the evenings. There were two nice chairs so this room had everything we needed. The second room was cosy with a good size wardrobe. The security on the main entrance was very good, with an electronic keypad/lock. We were happy with the value-for-money at the discounted price we paid.

- Excellent location. It’s really close to the Minster and therefore pretty much everything else in the city centre, but the street it’s on is nice and quiet so despite the good location we weren’t disturbed by noise. - Clean and prettily decorated, with a nice mix of freshness to the decor plus some lovely old furniture so it still felt homely. There was also a cute ‘tuck shop’ of snacks which was a good alternative to a mini fridge, and probably much cheaper too in this economy! - The person who checked us in was really friendly and down to earth. We had no need of help so didn’t speak to staff after the check in, but they made a great first impression. Overall it ticked all of our boxes - clean, comfortable, friendly, and charmingly decorated

It was very hot! Even with the room radiators off, we couldn’t figure out how to turn down the temperature of the bathroom radiator which was scorching! The entrance hall was too hot too. That said a fan was provided in the room and the windows opened easily, so this isn’t something that would put us off staying here again.

We booked same night as my husband was in hospital following a seizure and neither of us were capable of driving 60 miles home. We were accommodated late at night and were very pleasantly surprised at the beautiful room we got for such a low price. The entire guest house was clean and tidy, and the bed was very comfortable. Thank you for having us.

It was unclear where parking was allowed as the street is permit only (we only realised this in the morning as its not well signposted) so it may be worth checking with the hosts if there's anywhere to park. The radiator can't be turned off in the bathroom so it was like a sauna - the windows open in the bedroom though so we were comfortable.

We sought a room within walking distance of the York train station and Old Town. 23 St. Mary's is convenient for both and situated at the end of a dead-end street, so there is limited motorcar traffic noise. The room is a bit tight but has ample storage. The breakfast was tremendous. Carol, our hostess is genuine and very hospitable. The bathroom was very clean.

WiFi service was a bit clunky, but that may be the provider. Noise from other guests is a fact of life in a smaller B&B or inn.

Lovely independent boutique bed and breakfast in close proximity to York’s Old Town. Just a twelve minute walk from the train station, and ten minutes walk to York Minster and all the pubs and restaurants in the area. Proprietors communicated with me impeccably the whole time. It’s very obvious that they have a passion for this and wanted to do everything to ensure I had a pleasant stay. Fantastic at answering questions promptly and thoroughly. Classic English country-style accommodations. The bathroom was clean and shower had strong hot water. The in-room complimentary biscuits and inexpensive crisps and candy station downstairs were nice little bonuses that really added a lovely touch to the whole experience!

The mattress was a little uncomfortable and I was a wee bit too tall for the bed. My feet hung off the edge while sleeping. The water pressure in the toilets could have been stronger. These are just minor complaints though.

Very nice little guesthouse, easily reachable by foot from the trainstation + just around the corner of the old town of York. The staff is extremely friendly, funny and helpfull. When we wanted to leave our luggage in the morning we were even able to check in directly and get the keys to our room which was really handy! The chocolate waiting for us in a litle bag hanging at the door-knob when coming back from the city at night was a cute little extra, which makes this place special. Don‘t miss the breakfast as it‘s really good. You even get black pudding (if you are into that :-)). I highly recommend this place. No doubt I‘d stay here again.

Quiet location, really lovely, cosy room, clean and well decorated. Good size bathroom, very clean with spacious shower. The staff member was waiting to check me in - a very pleasant welcome. It takes only approx 7 minutes by foot to get to the Cathedral, no need for a taxi.

I had asked for two single beds, but we had one double on arrival. However, that was rectified immediately. I had to pay an extra charge for parking elsewhere (I paid £7 for 24h stay at the weekend rate). I would say that £190 paid for a small room with no breakfast and an extra parking charge is slightly expensive. However, since I have shared that cost with my friend, it is acceptable for this convenient and quiet location. I would, however, research for a cheaper option but the same quality in the future stay in York.
