It’s the oldest hotel in San Francisco, so there’s an antique charm about the place. Good location near Japan town. Most important, weren’t completely happy with our first room, and for a modest fee we were upgraded to a lovely suite.
The place is kept scrupulously clean, but some areas (like the elevator) could use a little care. Also, our suite had two tvs, neither of which worked properly.

Extremely helpful and kind staff also at late night. Very good position to discover the city with public transportation and fair price for San Francisco
Building very old, have to be renovated. Breakfast could have more variety. Difficult to park nearby if you have car

The hotel room was nice, clean, and spacious. The Victorian interior was nice, maybe a little overdone for this age. Very very lit up. Amazing front desk staff. Met a number of them over 4 days, and all were pleasant and kind, especially Alysea, the petite morning frontdesk. Amazing bar and top-class bartendar Mike and manager Hameed. Mike's mixology with fun and humour adds to the great vibe in the bar. Well located in a decent neighbourhood and to the quaint Japanese Town full of surprises. I was grateful for the step provided to get up the tallest bed I have come across ! The complimentary coffee station was a superb idea with a good selection of coffee tea and hot chocolate 24/7. The front lobby with books and chairs to sit was brilliant.
The shower head is too small and really needs to be changed. Enough of Victorian shower heads. We need to evolve! Lol. Breakfast was sad. I would suggest at least one salad please. Maybe just cucumbers. The darkest sausages aka overdone and sad meat patties. The egg dish changed from scrambled to omelette. That was it. Lots of room for improvement. The entrance only has steps up to frontdesk so carrying in luggage is difficult as no bellboy or assistance is available. A downside to property. A ramp would have been perfect.

A spotless room in an historic hotel that's close to a major transit artery and within walking distance to several neighbourhoods.
Breakfast was ok but indistinguishable from chain motel offerings. Room was a little dark with alley views.

The location is great -- really easy to get around by bus (the #49 up and down Van Ness and to the Mission District was super-handy) and foot and BART. The building is beautiful, really graceful. I guess I would describe it as somewhat faded grandeur, but grandeur nonetheless. The bathroom has lots of counter space, which I appreciate.
The gym was closed because of some extensive repair work being done in the lower level. This wasn't too big a deal but we were turned off that they put an outdated note about it (saying the work would be finished a week prior) on the front door. So guests are greeted with negative and outdated news on a paper taped to the door, before they even reach the desk. Also the breakfast is about the same as what you'd get at a Hampton Inn off a highway. Would be nice to make it a little more special in such a beautiful setting.

We absolutely loved the style of the property; it felt like a time warp and all elements of it were obviously treasured and the staff do their best to keep it that way. So nice to see a property like this as opposed to these modern / scandi type hotel rooms you get everywhere these days. The room was cosy and the bed very comfortable. Everything was clean. We had lots of nice bathroom products to use including dressing gowns as well. Breakfast was great, we enjoyed the selection that was available. Breakfast being included is always a nice touch at a hotel so you can fill yourself up for the day before you venture out. Every member of staff we spoke to were warm & friendly. The hotel was in a safe part of the city; away from the hustle & bustle but super easy to get anywhere via the very reliable buses of San Francisco.
The bath / shower was quite small albeit this cannot be helped due to it being an old property! Other than this, nothing negative to mention at all.

I loved the neighborhood, the proximity to Japantown was the best. As a solo traveller I felt safe. I also loved how quiet and peaceful the rooms were, the decor in the rooms, and the tub. I got a free upgrade which I loved. The staff were polite. My favorite part of this hotel is the coffee that they have til 10 am in the breakfast room.
I love this hotel but I wish the beds were softer. I slept better on the couch in my room. Also, my window to the outside didn't lock, but I decided it wasn't an issue because I was on the third floor.

I love the ambiance and staff in this Old World SF hotel originally built in 1902 as a private home and converted to a hotel in the 1904. It's my favorite SF hotel and is a very safe neighborhood. You must see it to believe it. The buffet breakfast is substantial including make your own waffles and scrambled eggs along with fruit, cereals and yogurt. The bartender is quite knowledgeable and offered to make me my own signature drink.
We were bummed because they don't have the channel to broadcast the Giants game and the bar bites weren't very interesting. Which was okay because we ended up eating at Octavia around the corner which is a superb culinary experience! But don't take my word for it -- we sat next to the former food critic for the Chronicle celebrating a wedding anniversary. We had what she had - the Chefs 6 course dinner and it was amazing! Definitely a special treat and reasonably priced given the quality and service. I will be back to both the hotel and the restaurant 😉

Beautiful old hotel with spacious gorgeous rooms. This staff is incredibly nice. We got there really early and just wanted to drop off our luggage but at 10:00am they were so nIce to give us a room to use. When the shower diverter wouldn’t work they gave us access to the next door room for us to use the shower. So classy and kind way to deal with this minor inconvenience. I was truly impressed. Breakfast was great and they were very nice when we were leaving. The front desk carried my luggage out to the car when it was time to go. Above and beyond nice people.
It was perfect. Just minor inconveniences that we were fine overlooking because of the professionalism of the staff. They are a 10 in my mind. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
