I was a little hesitant to book after reading some of the reviews but took the plunge and we were not disappointed. The location was excellent for the local attractions and two subway stations nearby. Our room was spacious, comfortable in the "new wing". A little museum about the history of the building was very interesting. . Toiletries were supplied, regularly replenished and of good quality. Very soft towels, robes, hotel slippers, Ironing board, Iron and hairdryer were available in the room as was kettle, tea and coffee. Great value for money

No western TV channels ( may not be the hotel's fault), and fridge was not very cold. Breakfast was varied but I feel the quality could have been better.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. We had a beautiful meal here and the waiter was so attentive. The hotel is so beautiful and has so much elegance and charm. It has an amazing history and there are many stories of who has stayed here. The inside is full of character, beautiful timber furnishings and gorgeous carpets. It is still very modern though in all its amenities and is very centrally located. We loved being across the road from People’s Square where we could see people dancing and practicing Tai Chi. All in all we were extremely happy here and would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Shanghai.

The location is superb. Just next to the mall, and a few minutes walk away to Nanjing road pedestrian street. Just across the hotel is people’s park. All staffs are friendly, especially the concierges. I had a lovely stay there. And btw you can send your taobao package there and the staff will send it to you room (I wish some people reviewed about this before so I could have my taobao shopping spree).

The hotel is a bit old and a bit dusty. And I wish the staffs can be responsive to the messages I sent in Booking. But with the price I paid and the location wise, it didn’t bother me.

Our room on the 5th floor was far larger than we expected and with a view across People's Square. The decor is appropriately dated but with modern bathroom facilities. The hotel is very well positioned from a tourism perspective. People's Square Underground Stop is right outside the hotel so getting around the city is super easy and cheap on public transport. Nanjing Rd West (Pedestrian St) is less than 200m from the hotel and this vibrant part of the city is great to walk along both during the day and at night. At the other end of Pedestrian St is the Bund with amazing views across the river (the lights are amazing and a cruise is well worth it, as is a trip up the Shanghai Tower).

Sometimes it was difficult to get online but the front desk staff were helpful in assisting. I suspect our issue may have been interference from having our mobile data on as well as WiFi.

Great location: The hotel located in front of People’s square metro station so carrying luggages have no problem. It’s near Nanjing road and can access on foot. The bed and pillow are so comfortable that I had deep sleep every nights.

My room is in the new building and not accessible by elevator. However, the hotel staff carried all of my luggages to my room. The price is quite different from booking.com. As you need to pay at the hotel counter, the hotel require more money on my check out due to ‘… December’s price has gone up so you need to pay more…’ This reason sounds irrational to me as they have already charged me on my checkin.

Everything! Excellent location. People' square and Metro station is just across the road. From terminal 2 Pudong airport, simply take metro line to and stop at People's Square station. Take Exit 8 and the hotel is across the road. Walking distance to The Bund and malls. There's a halal restaurant and Family Mart just a gew blocks away which is really convenient. Room is clean and with comfortable bed. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Would definately stay here again in future.

This hotel has the BEST location in Shanghai. 2min walk to a metro station (line 2 goes straight to the airport), 5min walk to Nanjing Pedestrian Street (with many many shops, cafes and restaurants) and 20min walk to the Bund. The building is beautiful, staff spoke good English -this is very helpful! Room was very spacious, with a big and super comfortable bed, pillows and nice bed linen. Bathroom was goo too, with all the toiletries. All very clean. Breakfast was decent, with some western options. Definitely recommend this hotel.

I don't understand why this Hotel has a 7.5 rate in Booking. The only thing that can be a bit tricky is that some rooms are located on split floors, with a few set of stairs to reach them (nothing much, there's 2 lifts for whole floors). If you have heavy luggage or any disability, just inform the Hotel.

The Hotel is super well located. Access to the metro station where most lines intersect, just across the street. Facing People's Park and right at the beginning of Nanjing Road. There are lots of restaurants and coffee shops around. The building is very beautiful and old and and it stayed that way. If you are looking for the old charm of a 20s/30s hotel, this is the place. Will definitely stay here again!

It's not really a negative for me, however, you must bear in mind that it is not a contemporary hotel. I really enjoyed it and I chose it exactly because of that but there's an old vibe throughout the whole place. Breakfast is not bad actually but don't expect the full western experience. Also, something that I have read here in the comments before and was kind of expecting it, the hotel charged extra 10% over the booking price (but still cheaper than on their website).

The hotel is in an excellent location, next to a shopping mall that houses the Madame Tussauds museum. The architecture is in an Italian style, making you feel as if you are inside an old aristocratic palace, which is lovely, I would say. The breakfast is not outstanding, but it's great for being in China.

After entering the room, we requested a replacement because the inside of the bathtub was not very clean, and the used toilet paper roll was stained with red (I will limit myself to this!). We called the reception for assistance, but they did not answer. They sent a woman directly to our floor, and after several attempts to explain the situation (using an online translator), we went directly to the reception. English is not their strong suit, unfortunately!

The location was perfect for us, which was the main reason for us to pick the hotel in the first place. The hotel is not one of the new and fancy ones, but one of the outstanding historic buildings of Shanghai. We enjoyed the historic building with a nice entrance and lovely park view of the high-floor rooms. It's fun that people keep taking pictures of the building. It might be better if the rooms were renovated, however. with the current `original` state of the rooms, it gives a time-machine feeling. We didn't stay for breakfast at the hotel, as there are plenty of local options around. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
