Ok, this is a complicated one.... German hostels are the gold standard. It's engrained in the culture, influenced by the Benedictine exhortation to "never ignore the knock of the stranger for it might be the lord" DJH takes that exhortation to heart and you will find a good bed, a relaxing shower and a decent Fruhstuck in a breathtaking setting overlooking "die blaue Donau" The problem is getting there after a day travelling😆 Google Maps will send you on two paths by foot, the first which is partially closed. But if you keep the faith and get checked in, then treat yourself to ein Bier on the terrace of the Oberhausen next door.

Really nice to have breakfast included! In particular I found the receptionist very friendly and was very welcoming upon arrival, thank you so much! :) Was also great that refreshments were available at reception.

Would've perhaps appreciated something cooked for breakfast, but can't complain for a youth hostel, in general it was just great to have breakfast included.

We usually stay at higher priced appartments / hotels but tried the Jugendherberge. It’s furniture is of course simple but the location is so awesome that it’s not important if everything else is a bit simpler. The breakfast is better than in some if not most hotels.

I could imagine that if it’s completely booked things might become crowded.

This was our second stay at this location. We found the view to be outstanding and staying in a historic castle/fort fun. This facility is always in excellent condition and very clean. We appreciated having the option to rent all the beds in the room so our stay was private. Our private bathroom was perfect. The breakfast was well organized, generous, presented in a hygienic manner and delicious. The museum in the adjoining building is really great and well worth a visit. There is a wonderful restaurant available next to the museum with an outstanding panoramic view. We really enjoyed lunch there but they were totally booked for dinner. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time for the evening meal. We took the foot path down to town for dinner (the German restaurant right across the bridge was great) and the return back up the hill wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be.

We were on the 5th floor. Climbing all those stairs to your room with a good size suitcase is challenging, but the view once you arrive makes it worthwhile. Castles/historic forts were never known for elevators though, right? ;)

The facilities were rather basic, but that was to be expected in a youth hostel. The location on top of the mountain in a medieval castle with Roman roots and a view over the city is unique. Museum, restaurant and free parking around the corner.

Please provide a few drinking cups in the bath room.

Fantastic iconic location (once we’ve pushed our bikes up the 22% incline!) Friendly helpful staff, great breakfast and evening meals, good bike parking and washing facilities, relaxed and comfortable

WiFi not wonderful but entirely understandable given it’s a castle!

It is located in an old castle on top of a hill (very steep road if you travel by bike :)) and with a great view of Passau (but not from room!). The room was equipped with basic facilities but was very clean. Towels are not included in the price (small extra charge). The breakfast was excellent (buffet) and, very positively, completely free of plastic waste.

The location is absolutely stunning 🤩 who thought you can sleep in an actual castle! And because we had to do a late check-in, we started our stay with a "treasure hunt" to find the key and the room, which was in the tower of the castle. Wonderful!

We really liked the unique location, the extraordinary view, the very delicious and plentiful breakfast. Free parking at "Rennweg Parkplatz" nearby.

You have to find a place where WiFi sign is available. You have to climb the stairs to the higher levels.
