This retreat was spectacular. It felt a little like Icelandic Disneyland and I say that as a compliment. Intentional in every detail, the dining experience was exquisite. They were able to cater to my many dietary needs, and it didn't take away from my husband's unfettered experience. The basalt hot tub was shared between three residences but that didn't take away from the experience. The retreat was located in a great place, close to some geothermal spas and a quick trip up to Þingvellir National Park.

The beds! Oh my gosh the beds were like sleeping on concrete and I was so sad. I don't even typically mind a harder mattress but it just felt like they were missing a soft topper or something. You also couldn't connect to the TV with any external hardware (which wasn't an issue for us bc we didn't want to spend much time in the room itself).

The guest house is in a beautiful location conveniently located for all the golden circle sights. Our room was warm and cosy and we loved the outside hot tub. The breakfasts and the dinners were all delicious and the staff were super friendly and helpful.

The hotel advertised a service to wake us up if there were a chance of seeing the northern lights which we were very keen on and therefore signed up. We were disappointed to find out the next morning that other guests had seen the lights but we hadnt been alerted. We were more proactive after that and downloaded an app to alert us and in fact saw some fabulous lights in Reykjavik the following night.

We loved the setting, the remoteness, the peace, the beauty. Our cottage was warm and stylish and cosy and we LOVED our own natural private heated mini pool. The complimentary mini bar was a man unusual touch. The food in the Torfhus restaurant was EXCEPTIONAL, absolutely divine and the staff were lovely.

Very unique, relaxing and beautiful place to stay. We stayed in a bigger house. The house was beautifully designed. The beds were comfy. The house also had personal hot tub/hot spring. The retreat has amazing restaurant. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. The staff is very friendly and welcoming.

It would have been great if the house had a wardrobe or a closet.

"The way you do anything is the way you do everything", so from the moment you arrive you know you're going to have a great time. The thought put into furnishing the rooms and other interiors, the ideas and great execution of the menu and the pairings, the conversations with folks that work there, everything tells you the entire team that takes care of the place clearly not only knows what they're doing, but they care a lot about this place and you having a great time at The Retreat. We spent 3 nights in August, it was perfect location for the hikes around Golden Ring. Can't wait to come back in the winter.

The service was amazing, rooms / cottages were very private, hot tub was great. The dinner was absolutely fantastic- some of the best meals we’ve ever had. we ended up eating there all 4 nights in a row. Very minimal light pollution that allowed us to see the northern lights 2 nights in a row 1 the courtesy phone calls from the staff advising us the light activity was well appreciated. will definitely be back her again and highly recommend it to all!

It feels remote, yet surrounded by lovely vistas; it is within easy driving distance to the geysers (Geysir) and to the incredible Gulfoss waterfalls, yet sits in an atmosphere of peacefulness - whether you are enjoying one of the private basalt stone hot pools or photographing horses with their new foals close by. We were especially impressed by both the authenticity and quality of woodwork, architecture, furnishings and art in the restaurant/bar areas (and including the traditional Icelandic torfus houses where guests stay) that successfully transport the guest into a time closer to the Viking age. If you care to slow down and appreciate the surroundings here then you might find yourself (as we did) soaking in some of the mystic energy that Icelanders have described over centuries. Additional impressions of true quality related to the food and staff. The food is definitely some of the best on the island (including the breakfast), and the staff are all of a high caliber including the younger staff (who come for the summer season from mainland Europe with impeccable credentials and experience). All in all, each staff go out of their way to make you, as the special guest, warmly welcomed.

In the middle of nature, close to golden circle attractions, peaceful, great food

General sitting area - not warm and welcoming, a small library and fireplace will be great….the whole place lacks a gathering place for guests

There is nothing we didn't love about this resort, from check-in to check-out everything was fabulous. The friendliness of the staff, the quality of the food, the amazing location, the hot pot next to the hut. We loved every minute spent here. A big shout out to the maitre d'h who pulled us away from the dining table to take us outside where the northern lights were dancing, absolutely amazing!

our stay at Torfhus felt like a real retreat, it was quiet and the rooms were beautifully designed and cosy. The outside hot spa was a real treat. staff were very attentive and the chef created a wonderful culinary experience each evening. although it’s priced at the top end it really is a stay we will never forget.
