Difficult to find the hotel as it is inside the Sassy. Taxi dropped off at a piazza. No concierge to help with suitcases as we had to find and walked down steep stairs (approx 90). Left my husband with suitcases and looked for hotel. Not suitable for young kids and older people. There are more such hotels that are accessible by taxi.

Our room was enormous - No. 24, one of the "cave" suites - and very comfortable. Staff were very friendly and helpful, always ready to help with advice on where to go, restaurant recommendations etc.

The one thing we didn't like - and not the hotel's fault - is that the Google Maps app on our phones tends to direct you, even when walking, down the road that leads to the lower part of the Sasso Caveoso (more or less opposite the big rock church) and then direct you up the pedestrian paths to where the hotel is. There is a much shorter direct route down from the upper part of town, which would have been nice to know when we were lugging suitcases!

My friend and I stayed in the cave suite, which was such a unique experience. The room was perfectly built into the cave with a separate enclave as an atmospheric seating area. The hotel staff were friendly and really helpful in terms of advice on navigating our way around the sites. We even managed to fit in a spa session (sauna & jacuzzi) which was sheer bliss. We had the place to ourselves and spent a relaxing hour unwinding. The hotel’s central location also makes it a perfect base to explore Matera. Cannot thank Dominico and his colleagues enough for such a wonderful stay.

We loved the unique location. The breakfast was spectacular and our spa room was beautiful. They provided local wine and snacks for purchase in the room, which was a very nice touch and all reasonably priced. It was magical!

The location is difficult to find and you can only access it by foot with TONS of steps. You can pay 8euro per bag for bag service and they meet you at your car. You MUST do this! If we go back a second time, I would use a backpack for all my belongings. Pack light! It was all worth it!! One small thing I will mention is it would be helpful if the owners and staff spoke better English or I spoke some Italian. Written directions for the hot tub and room heater would be helpful as well.😊

Unique kind of accommodation! The rate was above our normal practice, but we did it! We booked for one night and had a memorable experience. Once in a lifetime! Unless we ever return to Matera, in which case we will book the same room: #29! We parked the rental car at Rocco Scotellaro parking lot. Antico Convicino is at 270 meters from that parking lot. 7-8 minutes slow pace. We also followed the recommendations and only took from the car the necessary stuff. The projector with Matera related movies was such a special treat.

The suite with terrace is a lovely, spacious room which is beautifully finished. The terrace is fabulous - much larger than we expected and with a fabulous view over the Sassi to the caves on the hillside on the other side of the ravine. We were so pleased that we stayed here. The room was larger than we expected, and has a 'relaxation area' as well as the large shower room. Breakfast was also very good, and all the staff were delightful and very helpful. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is impossible to avoid steps to and from the hotel, so do not choose it if you cannot carry your suitcases up and down those steps. But it was worth it!

Very little storage space in the room for unpacking - the minimalist decor doesn't include a chest of drawers or shelves.

We loved our cave lounge with its bean bag seats and private projection area where we could relax with a film and a glass of wine! Staff were very helpful and friendly. Bed was large and comfy, breakfast was varied, shower was very good.

Location was a bit challenging for us oldies to be honest, at the bottom of lots of steps so not easily accessible with luggage, but the staff/taxi driver kindly arranged a porter for us, who made light work of it!

The hotel is in a great location at the heart of Matera close to the main attractions and restaurants. Made of all old stone, the rooms have a very unique and historical feel. You definitely get the sense that you are having an authentic experience. The staff were very responsive and helpful, they arranged taxi services for me and gave a great overview of Matera at check-in.

The rooms, and especially the bathrooms are very small. You essentially touch the toilet while you are showering and you should prepare for most of the bathroom to get wet when you shower. The room also had no windows (or aircon) so it got a bit stuffy and warm at times and it wasn’t even Summer. If you have more than one small suitcase I HIGHLY suggest making use of the hotel’s luggage service (it was less than 10 euro). It’s “only 40 steps down” to the hotel but it’s steep and windy so it can be challenging. Most of these issues are likely attributed to the historical nature of the place. It’s certainly worth the stay but just good to know going into your visit.

The location in the Sassi district was excellent, close to all the main attractions. The room was charming, with lovely stone walls. The bed was comfy. It had a tiny little fridge, to keep drinks cold which was handy. The staff were lovely and very helpful. They made a great cappuccino on request in the breakfast room.

The only negative was that the room was very small, there was not a lot of room for your suitcase to be opened and easily accessed. Otherwise it was great.

Absolutely beautiful, centrally located, place to stay with wonderful views form the very large balcony. The rooms carved into the limestone are exquisite and beautifully decorated and furnished. The staff was welcoming and the breakfast was delicious, offered in a beautiful setting inside the large limestone breakfast room. I love this place!

I wouldn't change a thing. Just remember not to bring your luggage down the many steps to get to Antico Convicino. Bring the minimum, and enjoy this memorable place!
