EVERYTHING! The hotel describes itself as a simple hotel. There is nothing simple about the beautiful craftmanship of the Japanese room, the attention to details, the humble extra polite staffs, beautiful breakfast arrangement, the little zen garden outside the room .... LOVE EVERYTHING!!! The room is so spacious, bathroom is very well-equipped, the tatami room, the comfy slipper, the 5-star amenities in the room that would make the neighbouring chain hotel ashamed. I mean, for the price point, this is FANTASTIC. The hotel is located right next to the gate of that famous temple in Asakusa, right above a small cute Starbucks. Very very busy area with tons of food and konbini around. But inside the hotel itself is very very quiet. 5 min walk to Asakusa subway station (right in the middle of Haneda and Narita, with direct lines to both, and a direct line to Ginza. Easy to transfer to other areas as well, but I concentrated my stay at eastern Tokyo this time to recuperate from the craziness of western Tokyo). I sent my luggage a day earlier, and when I check in my luggage is waiting for me in my room. Nice! The old sweet couple that runs the ryokan is very polite and helpful, and spoke good English.

NOTHING to dislike about the hotel. If anything, it's the fact that the entry/exit for Asakusa line that has elevator is another 10 min walk from the nearest entry/exit. Not the hotel's fault. Asakusa station is an old station so be prepared to carry your luggage up and down the stairs if you took Asakusa line. There is a nearby exit/entry with elevator for Ginza line, but Ginza line doesn't have a direct train to airport, so you need to transfer to another line, which usually means you will carry your luggage up and down the stairs eventually. Unless you use the luggage transfer company.

The location is right at the gate to the Sensoji Temple and the Asakusa subway/train line is right around the corner and is a direct shot to Haneda Airport Terminal - could not be more convenient! The staff are so friendly and helpful. They let us store our bags for the afternoon before our flight after we had checked out, and let us borrow tools (to attempt) to fix our buggered luggage handle, then agreed to dispose of it when we couldn't fix it. The facilities are super clean and modern, and we felt this was the perfect place to end our trip to Japan. Although it was super busy outside, there was no noise from the crowds up in the room. We stayed in one of the traditional Ryokan rooms with mattresses on the floor which were comfortable enough, but next time would probably opt for the western-style beds. Overall, a great stay in an exciting area of Tokyo - bring an extra bag for the shopping!

We stayed in a traditional room with tatami floors and futons. The entire hotel was immaculate. Our room had a floor level window with views of the gates and pagoda of Sensōji Temple. The other window had a view of the Tokyo Skytree. The room was basically across the street from the Ginza line subway station. It was almost impossible to mess up where you were going because it was the last stop on the line. The staff was amazing and super helpful. They helped me ship my bags so I didn’t have to struggle with them to my next stop. They also helped me find a late night spot to eat. As a big surprise, when I checked out they gave me a gift. Don’t miss out on getting the Japanese breakfast. We had it set up in our room. Not only was the food delicious but the entire presentation was a unique experience.

This gem is an oasis of tranquillity and peace in the middle of bustling, tourist-heavy Tokyo. It’s one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at in Japan - perhaps even the best. It’s not large or overly luxurious, but it’s all about the details. My 24 m² “mini home” for five days was stylish and thoughtfully designed, blending traditional and modern Japanese elements. Everything I needed was there. I loved the art, the small touches, the welcome sweet, the little farewell gift, and the warm, friendly staff.

Everything was well-organized and thoughtfully taken care of. The area is very touristy, which can feel a bit overwhelming at times. While I really appreciated the style of the room, the mattress on the floor wasn’t entirely to my liking.

A wonderful place to relax and to explore Tokyo from. Kaminarimon Ryokan is only 1-2 minutes walk from the Asakusa subway station and is in the heart of the Sensō-ji tourist area. Despite this, as soon as you walk in the door, it feels quiet and restful. I had a single room and there was plenty of space for my luggage (snowboard bag) and a floor chair +table as well as the futon which was very comfortable. There was even a nespresso machine with a few pods for each day. The room was very clean and I was offered fresh towels after my first night (I only stayed 2 nights). The staff were exceptionally helpful and the check-in and out was easy. They were kind enough to store my luggage when I checked out as I had a 9pm flight. There was even a shower I could use (¥500 for half an hr) with towels + soap etc. It saved me trying to get to the airport early and having a shower there. I have stayed in Tokyo many times and I'm not normally one to write a review, but Kaminarimon Ryokan was exceptional. The accommodation, the location, the staff, all of it was amazing. Highly recommend!

Nothing not to like

The staff at Kaminarimon Ryokan were very kind, helpful and attentive. There was always someone at the front desk to greet us and answer our questions. Any services requested like laundry or housekeeping were done well and timely. The traditional tatami mat room was beautiful and a quiet oasis from the very busy streets below. The futon beds were comfortable and everything was very clean. The subway line is conveniently located close by. This area is very popular with tourists with the gate and temples close by, but it was easy for us to get to quieter areas by exploring on foot or subway.

The breakfast was good, especially the fish. However, I do think the price is a little high (perhaps due to city location) when compared to other similar breakfasts at inns around Japan.

It is strategically located near the Thunder Gate of Sensō-ji in Asakusa, just a 3 mins walk from Ginza line Asakusa station. The ambience in the 'ryokan' is very comfortable, you can really feel the zen the moment you step in. The staffs are really friendly, and they remember which room you're staying. The ryokan structure is designed with extra safety, you'll need to tap the room card in the lift to access to your room floor. As the lift to the room floor is located at the reception level, I'll pass by the reception counter every time leaving / coming back and for sure greeted warmly by the staffs. I arrived the ryokan early around 11am, but check-in is only allowed after 3pm. They were kind to keep my luggage and allow me to use the laundry service (at 500 yen including wash & dry). They even folded my clothes and delivered them to my room before i returned to the ryokan in late afternoon. I used the laundry again the 2nd night, and the receptionist was kind enough to call and inform me when the laundry is done so i don't need to keep checking at the laundry room. The room is very spacious. I have opted for a tatami Japanese style bed and it is very comfortable. A traditional snack and some beverages are served in the room upon check-in, while a small souvenir gift were presented upon check-out. They really make you feel appreciated. Bathroom is also big with a full size bath tub. All amenities are refilled on daily basis. A yukata, its belt and socks are available in the cupboard, giving you an extra Japanese-feel. In overall, it is a highly recommended place if budget is not an issue. The price is slightly at a high side.

No direct access to room floor from Level 1. Level 1 lift can only access to Level 3 reception floor, and you'll need to change to another lift. Cleanliness was OK but housekeeping can be further improved. They forgot to replenish my Yukata on final night, but it was rapidly replaced upon my call (although given me a wrong size).

Where both past and present tradition and culture meet in harmony. From the outside, the Kaminarimon Ryokan is an unassuming building amidst the noisy crowd. As soon as you enter, the hustle and bustle noise from the busy street is completely gone. It's like entering into another dimension where everything is tranquil and you're suddenly at peace with everything around you. You will be greeted by friendly accommodating staff. The room is spacious and very traditional and yet, it got all the modern amenities for maximum comfort, very quiet despite of the noise from the street outside. The view is just awesome. Perfect location as it is in the heart of just everything.

Everything is perfect!

The staff was really friendly and helpful. The location of this hotel is very close to Asakusa train station, very easy to get around Tokyo by train. Room was spacious and very clean bathroom. Well equipped as well. I also love the scents of the lobby.

Nothing about the hotel itself. But just a suggestion if you are travelling with lots of luggage, it’s a bit hard to get to this hotel from the train station (many people and stairs, and lifts are sometimes not that easy to find). As this is a major tourist attraction, it’s very very packed outside the hotel. It’s better if you arrive by taxi (if you carry lots of luggage)

The staff were very polite and accommodating. I asked the reception staff where I could store my luggage as I had checked out but still wanted to shop nearby and they offered to store my luggage at the hotel. Another staff member went out of her way to search travel routes to assist me with the next leg of my journey. I stayed in a tatami room and loved it. It was a bit small but very cute and more than big enough for one person. The room was comfortable and clean. Great location next to Kaminarimon gates, Nakamise shopping street and Sensoji temple.

Nothing!
