The kitchen was well-equipped and spotless, with enough space for multiple people to cook at the same time. I really appreciated that the female and male rooms are naturally separated without any extra cost. It truly felt like home. My room was spacious, with a comfortable bed, and during the day I often had it all to myself. The location is perfect, just a ten-minute walk to the historic centre of Dunedin. The building itself is beautiful and full of history. I wish more people would visit during the off-season, as this place truly deserves more recognition. Thank you, I hope to stay again in the future!

I cannot think of anything I wouldn't like.

Very good price. Subcentral location in an atmospheric building with history, wooden stairs and colour carpets. Great staff. Not too overcrowded. A number of common rooms, suitable for quiet remote work with a laptop. Private rooms and doubles are located on another floor from dormitories and have their own kitchen with a terrace, however, it is open for everyone, too. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I can definitely recommend this to anybody who visits Dunedin, in this property all is organised with care and love.

Bathroom: very small and 'decorative' hooks for holding clothes/towel reliably. No small shelves for shampoo/soap inside bath cabins, no other options rather than keeping your staff on the floor.

Good for the budget; no complaints. And the man in charge was happy to do my check-in before reception opened. Hostel is remarkably clean, and hostel runs efficiently with signage to guide residents behavior.

A little bit hard to move around the large dining table. Signage might mean you cannot do laundry at times you want, but that's not a problem as there's a good laundromat about a km up the road in the Mornington suburb.

They are very understanding, flexible, they allowed me to extend my stays and when I had a fall, and made sure I was okay. And they have an awesome music room. I am a musician and I had some fun playing on their instruments. I also made some good friends there as well. Which is amazing. And the staff are awesome. It's a clean place as well. It's also the former Dunedin hospital so it's rich in history and it is a historic place which is awesome.

I can find no fault with the chalet. It's an awesome place and Chris is a great manager and the staff are amazing.

I have never stayed at a backpackers before…. Understandably, I was dubious… what a pleasant surprise. The lovely wee single room was simply perfect. Tucked away on the top floor. The room so very charming; spotlessly clean, warm, quiet and sizeable.

I didn’t explore the hostel options / facilities… I was in and out. However the quaint wee library/ snug next to my room was a delightful wee hamlet along with the balcony on the top floor.

THe staff are so good, just the entire vibe. Im currently staying somewhere else, You guys are much more friendly and "homely". Your staff member "Quintine" ? Awesome, keep getting people like that.

Windows in the taoilets need to be checked, some of them dont open, and it smells bad at times.

It’s an old house which gives it a special charm. I felt very confident and comfortable and I actually felt at home. I really loved it. The rooms were very comfortable and this place is nicely designed and decorated. I extended my stay because I liked it so much.

The rooms are a bit cold in the winter. There is a heater which does good work, but maybe a bigger heater could be better.

The facilities have an old-fashioned vibe. This adds a certain character and charm to the overall experience. Additionally, the friendly and welcoming staff are always on hand to assist with any inquiries. Overall, Chalet Backpackers is a great choice for those who prioritize location and cleanliness, with the added benefit of a nostalgic ambiance.

It was a great experience, nothing to complain about.

Chalet offered everything you'd need from an accomodation, cooking, cleaning and sleeping. Multiple lounge areas, one with a stunning view, multiple bathrooms and shower spaces, free parking outside the building (first come first served) and not a long walk away from tbe hustle of Dunedin.

Cannot put any fault to this accomodation. . . maybe plug sockets at a premium but am really nit picking here

Lord of original features and decor - Friendly staff upon arrival - Good showers - Comfy beds with clean linen - Rooms were a good size - I had a plug socket near my bed, although others didn’t - Loved the music room with pool table - Dining room with lots of board games - TV room and library - Laundry facilities (only one dryer though)

- Wi-Fi was hit-and-miss, depending on where you were in the building - Kitchen was a little too small for the number of guests at peak times - Sofas in TV lounge are pretty grim and stained; need cleaning/replacing - Common rooms locked quite early and not opened again until reception opens - this leaves nowhere to have a private phone call or just sit and chill at night
