This backpackers was a perfect stay for my needs. I was traveling alone and met some great people to go and explore dunedin with. Ontop had a great variety of guests, for both young and old travelers to connect with. But with that being said it was a perfect mix of party hostel/chill hostel. As nosie is shut down by 10pm and all the party goers are funneled into the world class poolbar downstairs, where there is cheap drinks and free pool!! (unless it is a friday or saturday night, the pool is only half price, only lol). Ontop is right in the middle of town and it is a perfect location to walk where you need to go, the centre is 2 min away and a big supermarket is 2 blocks away. the hostel was sunny and warm its facilities were clean and easy to use. the staff and owner were lovely and they made my check-in process easy, gave me lots of information on what to do. I will definently be staying here when I come back to dunedin, which wont be long as there is more to see in this charming city.

I like everything about this place! 10/10 good price ! Pool-tables are really good! The bar is great! And the location is amazing, right in the middle of Town with plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from within walking distance ! Our bed was perfect and great size room with a showers / toilet and Tv ! So very happy with this place and will definitely 💯 stay again! This is my 3rd time staying here and I love it! Location is the best in Dunedin! Great price for accommodation! Really nice double bedrooms and nice bar and pool room 10/10

Perfect location for a couple that came on the bus and didn't have their own car. Everything we wanted to do was walking distance, even getting to the beach, bus stop was not even 5 minutes away. Loved the seclusion aswell, felt like we had an air bnb but for half the price.

Nothing major at all, maybe a mini fridge and maybe some hooks for jackets or more coat hangers, but that's just nit picking at this point.

Basic, yet perfectly adequate private room for a one night stay. Towels, some soap & hair wash were provided. Clean showers & toilets. Well equipped kitchen, including tea, coffee & a basic brekkie. Felt safe.

The kitchen was really messy. Lots of people just left their dishes on the side. When I came in early morning to make brekkie, there were dirty pans etc everywhere. This is not the fault of the hostel. It's just rubbish that other guests can be so selfish. Some noise at night & walls very thin. Not too bad.

Maybe it would seem differently when it's busy but it's probably low season now. So it was not crowded and easy to find space in the kitchen. The room is quite big and the hostel is clean.

To go to the bathroom you need to go outside. It's probably not a big issue in summer but it's cold in winter. There is a night toilet to use that you don't have to walk outside at night but it was even colder than outside. Other than that everything was okay.

Quality of room was okay just needed a TV. Loved the sunshine room facing north! Perfect location. Free ☕️ awesome!!!!!! Needs some roof in smoking section, even for just dry table.

Bed needed softer; too loud guests next door to me .....but staff told them....but they started abusing him. I felt quite uncomfortable. Walls were thin.

Good location easy to book in. Staff were helpful and accomodation was comfortable and warm. Plenty of eateries around but has a communal kitchen to use. Check out was easy. Buses were 2 mins away. No children which was nice. Clean and cozy.

Lots of stairs if you have mobility issues it didn't bother us but be aware and parking might be an issue. If you wanted to make a drink you have to use the communal kitchen and no eating or drinking in the room.

The room was comfy, I had a separate room so can’t comment on the dorms, although they looked tidy when I walked past. The free breakfast was good, I didn’t have any as I had my own to get through. Also had free look but didn’t have time to make use of that (gutted)

I would say the staff could be a bit more understanding and helpful. There was a bit of a sense of a “school teacher” vibe with them, strict rules with NO alcohol after 8 (I’m 30, I can have a beer after work), no food in the room and didn’t let me back up stairs to the kitchen after checkout (not even for a cup of my own tea!). I think it was due to the guests being more on the younger side, that said you feel private in your own room.

Great hostel for backpackers !! Very comfy and cosy room, great common areas and free breakfast !! Everything was super clean and the staff is really nice. Would def recommend it as a solo backpacker, I booked the female only 4beds room and was only sharing it with one other girl. Loved it, the location is amazing to go around Dunedin. Don’t hesitate to ask where to park for free they have some tips for you !

the location very central to most tourist enterprises. The most annoying part of the city was the parking. And for the ON TOP backpackers but you did have parking from6 pm until 9 am. Also little known back entrance/exit that eliminated the use of carrying a heavy suitcase the distance. The kitchen was clean but the fridge could have been a little more "organized" and fresher.
