The location directly in the old fortress is really amazing. You're above the city, in peace and quiet, and still 5 min walking to the center. The evenings at the fortress were magical... :) Otherwise, the hotel has a good standard - spacious rooms, reasonable beds and good sound isolation. It is not super lux but correct and comfy. Restaurant is really pleasant for dining, the breakfast didn't have that much variety, but ok. Overall excellent price/quality ratio.

We liked the location near the harbour and the center. There was also sufficient space for free parking. The staff was helpful and friendly. The room was clean.

The hotel is a bit retro and outdated, but that is not a problem if your expectations are not too high. The beds were a bit uncomfortable, and for summer, I would prefer a lighter blanket. For breakfast, it would have been nice to have some salad, etc.

The location of the hotel and history of the fort itself is excellent. The room was large and had everything you would need. Had a nice spacious bathroom that was updated. The staff were lovely, very helpful and always wanted to ensure that their guests were taken care of.

Our stay was good, and we have no complaints. Wish there was more information about the fort itself on the property as you walk through.

Very good breakfast with fresh orange juice and warm croissants:), staff (the staff person at the breakfast does really good job!), bathroom, great views, location, space for parking a car. Highly recommended!

We asked for one bed, but unfortunately there was no available room with one bed. The option of 2 beds is quite uncomfortable, even if the beds are connected.

Excellent room and view. Very quiet (our major requirement). Very good breakfast. Very friendly - and helpful - staff. A very nice surprise: music only in the restaurant, well chosen, and not loud. (In the past, I've stayed in Pousadas with music in all spaces - and did complained about this in the evaluation. So this is a plus and other Pousadas should follow this example.) The WiFi worked perfectly.

The lounge/ bar. As a rule, Pousadas have a bar but also other common spaces where guests can relax, read or talk. In this case, there's a single space (bar/ lounge) and not comfortable for said activities. The pool is smaller than expected - but still adequate, given the (small) number of the guests that used it.

One of the best view on the Atlantic Ocean. Ask a room with a view and you won’t regret it. The location, being a fortress, is full of charm. Absolutely amazing! Excellent service and personnel too. Restaurant very good as well. My room was spacious, quiet and clean.

I would suggest providing complementary water every day.

We had a sea view which was excellent. The weather was changeable and so we could see the ocean in its different moods! The room was well appointed and thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis. All the staff we met during our stay were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a treat with a good range of hot and cold food, sweet and savoury and some interesting Azorean bits to try out. The setting was really lovely, the hotel is concealed behind the walls of a 17th century fort and we were able to walk along the walls of the fort - great for pictures. There were two small swimming pools for children and adults and access to the town was a 10-15 minute walk along the sea front. Would thoroughly recommend the experience.

There was very little not to like in this hotel. Perhaps the room with its dark wood floor and ceiling- which was certainly very smart - was just a bit on the dark side despite having patio windows onto a small balcony- on one occasion we had an island-wide power cut which made the room very dark indeed (not the hotel's fault of course!).

I loved the modern feel in a historic Castelo overlooking the ocean, marina, and city. Great lounging area with a pool and smaller sitting pool. Walking around the property offered cool viewpoints and a sense of a different time.

Shower was a bit difficult to get in and out of, could be tricky if you’re sending your older family.

Unique hotel for history fans like our group. It was really neat to stay in a historic fort. We loved the pool and swam in it every day to cool off in the August heat. Be aware that you have to walk up a large hill to get from town to this hotel. Being on high ground is to be expected when you’re staying at an old military fortification that looked out over the town.

Beds were kinda hard

View was fabulous; room was airy and comfortable; breakfast was excellent; location was amazing - not only picturesque but easy walking to town, marina, restaurants. Small swimming pool fit the bill, and walking the walls of the fort was something truly exceptional. We went on a boat trip with the hotel's recommended tour operator to the Goat Islands - a small but safe open boat, marvelous visit inside a cave on the island and swimming in the blue sea.

There are some signs of aging: a little rust on the outdoor chairs, hall carpets getting thin.
