The hotel dates back to an earlier age! The stained glass windows in the dining room have been retained and are beautiful. The outside appearance is beautiful, as is the reception area.

The decor is a bit tired. The ‘grandeur’ of the exterior is not reflected in the Formica topped tables in the dining room and the utilitarian type chairs. The paintwork is tired and dull. Our room was on the third floor, number 350 I think. It was described as a superior room and was perfectly adequate but poky enough. The approach along narrow, shabby corridors was not an overly pleasant experience. On the whole the staff were friendly, polite and helpful, especially in reception but there was one young man in the dining room who needed a few lessons in social etiquette! ( Unfortunate how one unpleasant experience often leaves a lasting and bad one).

The room had all the facilities you would want with a comfortable bed and the usual tea and coffee provisions. The breakfast was comprehensive with a mix of hot and cold food, cereals, fruit and cold meats all provided for guests with hot food being served from the buffet by a staff member. Free parking is provided at the hotel unlike some others in the area that make a ridiculous charge for overnight parking and whilst not in the centre of town is only a 5 minute walk away from shops and restaurants. The hotel has bags of history with visual reminders of an opulent and splendid past all around you and still generally in good order with regard to the decor. We have stopped here previously and will no doubt stop here again.

Room location at the rear of the hotel not the best with only a view of a blank wall outside the window on this particular occasion but for the price paid can put up with it.

Staff resolved issues quickly - We had two issues with the room when there. First was a loose headboard. It was sorted in a couple of hours. Then there was an issue with hot water in the shower. We went out for the day and when we got back the issue was resolved. The room was basic and dated, but clean, large and comfy. For the location and price it was a steal. Drinks and biscuits topped up daily along with daily housekeeping. Friendly bar staff. Big parking area.

The windows were particularly in need of a good clean - we couldn't see out of our window! I think having a grab rail in the shower/bath would make it safer - I felt I was going to slip when getting out.

Fair value for money - price reflected some imperfections in the hotel, as needing refurbishment in parts but my room was fine from a decorative point of view. Location is great - close to Harrogate town centre.

Process for gaining breakfast could be improved like the provision of some self-service drink machines and avoidance of a line-up for the cooked breakfast. Bedroom was a bit warm - this would be problematic on a very warm or hot summer day. Hotel need to consider installing air conditioning progressively over next 5-10 years as obviously a considerable expense. This is especially pertinent in higher floor rooms where window restrictors are essential for safety reasons. Overflow carpark needs expanding - it is a large hotel but the carparks were still full - nice there is no ANPR / barrier entry though!

Everyone at the hotel was super friendly. All the staff members had a nice, welcoming aura and were very helpful. They made the check in and check out process efficient. The breakfast option was also excellent. Overall, if you’re looking for a cheap stay in Harrogate, then this is the perfect place.

It’s a very old property, and though some people might prefer more of an older property due to the entire “vintage” side of it, I think some things genuinely need changing: the rooms are quite dull, and the lighting didn’t work properly. There was a punch in the wall, and the floorboards creaked a lot. The temperature of the water in the bathroom was also VERY hot, to the point where it burns your skin, so that needs reviewing. But, despite these things, it was a comfortable place to stay in, and these few things just need to be updated so the hotel is even better. Add a bit more light and colour in there and it will definitely seem like a more welcoming place.

I booked very last minute and was pleased to get a room. It was one of the last available, so I was not expecting great things. It was clean, comfortable and en suite. It was all we required, basically a bed for the night. All the staff were all excellent, very pleasant, helpful and they smile! There is a lift as well as a grand staircase to the upper floors. We have stayed here before and we love the space and the elegance that you feel of a bygone age. There are some very beautiful windows to admire. The dining room is very spacious and the food is beautifully served. At breakfast, there is so much choice! There is plenty of public seating throughout the ground floor to enjoy a cosy chat or to meet a circle of friends. The location is good as only a short distance from the town and the valley gardens. It is a bit uphill on returning from town but nothing drastic.Plus it does have its own car parking...fantastic!

The weather and only staying for a couple of nights!

Easy access to town, shops and places to eat. A grand old hotel a little tired in places but this did not spoil our stay. Our room was clean and comfortable with a huge bed. The bathroom was very clean with a bath and shower, we had all we needed. The breakfast was good and plentiful. There was both a bar food menu and a restaurant. There was a large free car park a definite plus in this area. Above all the staff and their customer service were excellent, everyone was courteous and efficient, from the reception to the bar and waiting staff all smartly dressed and service with politeness and a smile. The gardens outside were bright and cheerful and well looked after. We will stay again.

Only one thing, the bed was two singles joined together. A mattress topper would have made the joint in the middle a little more comfortable but it didn't affect our sleep, we slept very well.

Location was great. A very short stroll to the centre of Harrogate. Cairn hotel is in a nice, peaceful location. Hotel is full of charm and character and the staff were all very helpful and friendly - Gaynor (Manager) runs an excellent team. The single room I stayed in was spacious and exceptionally clean with a pleasant rear garden view. Plenty of choice for breakfast and ingredients are locally sourced. I very much enjoyed the sausages and it's a rare treat to see fried bread on the menu! I will definitely return to Cairn hotel next time I'm in Harrogate.

A decent cappucino at breakfast wouldn't have gone amiss.

Short walk into Town centre and walks through Valley Park to RHS Harlow Carr. Town pleasant to walk around. Plenty of eating places. Railway and bus station in Town. Easy drives to local places of interest and walks to local towns if your so minded.

Hotel dated. Have visited many times over the last 30 years or so and have never had a room you could call Superior or deluxe. We were told on many occasion that they were revamping areas of the Hotel but have never seen any real change. The last visit (on first floor) had a window that faced onto an outside wall 6 feet away and extended way upto 2nd floor. The bathroom had no window only mechanical ventilation. The dividing floor had no acoustic properties and when the upper floor room was in use it was noisy and vibrations walking around caused center fitting to rattle. Corridor floor uneven and noisy. Hotel served its purpose as a place to lay the head. Bed comfortable bedding clean and also towels good quality and changed when left on floor before daily service.

The hotel was very grand and a total throw back to old style hotels, even down to the fact the rooms had keys. It is perfectly situated for access to the city centre, 10 minutes at most. The staff were friendly, breakfast was excellent. This is an excellent spot if you want to stay for the night and go out and enjoy Harrogate. The hotel had a great feeling. We sat there and talked about how this place must have been in the past. You can see the grandeur in the hotel.

The hotel would benefit from some modernization but the size and scale of the project would be massive. It would also take away from the feel you get about the hotel.
