The location was excellent. A short 10 minute walk from the village. All the locals were very friendly and lots of quaint shops. Like small tardis'. Look small on the outside but go inside and they go very far back. Lots to buy, plenty of eateries. Very pleasant atmosphere outside. Back at the castle, amazing. Beautiful gardens and grounds. Staff amazing. The room we stayed in was absolutely epic. A state room as an anniversary treat was named after the original owner, Queen Margaret. Paperwork in the room with background history on the castle and herself. The interior was stunning. Just what a castle should be but with all mod cons.
There was nothing to dislike at all

It’s a breathtaking property that will truly conquer hearts. The castle has been upkeep wonderfully and the staff is truly there to ensure all your needs are met! It’s a once in a lifetime experience! Kayla is a wonderful staff member who constantly goes above and beyond for the guests! She enhanced the experience and was a pleasure to work with!
Not to the property’s fault, the town is extremely small with nothing to do outside the hotel. It’s truly a hotel to enjoy the amenities. The food is farm to table but the menu is limited. The facility could enhance the experience without altering the facade of the building (which is not permitted). It’s truly a place to relax and do nothing, but don’t count on sightseeing unless you leave the town for a day trip to Bath or Bristol. Shuttles to and from the train station would be nice. There is no AC given the building structure but fans work fine. The person who gave the tour was not knowledgeable on the castle itself, which left a bit to be desired.

We had the most wonderful 2-night stay at the Thornbury Castle Hotel. Everything was incredible, absolutely incredible. If you think that because it is an old castle then you should expect a dusty old place, you couldn’t be more wrong. The room was spotless (Audley room), the level of cleanliness was 10 out of 10, they even offer an evening tidy up of the room which is complimentary. The food was amazing, from breakfast to dinner. Pedro from the terrace bar, Pedro from the restaurant and Jacqueline from reception were so friendly, polite and helpful, they really went out of their way to make our stay as lovely as possible. We will definitely return to this magnificent place.

Unique experience, history, beauty of the place, the quality of the room and facilities, the gardens, the pretty village 5 min walk from the hotel. It is truly amazing!
Not many things to complain about. Maybe the only one - at breakfast they wouldn’t bring hot dishes before continental breakfast is done. They don’t let you know in advance about that. At the table of 4 people I was the only one who had hot dishes and had to wait almost an hour before everyone else finished their continental breakfast. Also for bar food the portions are way too small, like a side of broccoli they bring 4 little tips of very thin broccoli, or like tomato soup was ultra small and so was fish. I understand when they do it for haute cuisine, but this was not.

Truly Immersive Tudor Castle Experience: "Staying within authentic, centuries-old stone walls, exploring historic towers and gardens, and relaxing in grand rooms adorned with magnificent stone fireplaces creates a uniquely atmospheric escape — it genuinely feels like stepping back in time, even in summer." Exceptional, Attentive & Knowledgeable Service: "The staff provide warm, personalized service that anticipates needs. Their genuine pride in the castle’s history and insights into its features enhance the experience, making guests feel welcomed and valued." Delicious Breakfasts Served in Historic Splendour: "Breakfast is a highlight — superb locally-sourced ingredients (like expertly cooked dishes, pastries, and preserves) served in the castle's vaulted dining rooms with attentive table service, setting a luxurious tone for the day."

This place is GORGEOUS! It all just felt so genuine but still with the comforts of a modern hotel. The bed in the Salisbury room was absolute heaven. Breakfast was delicious.
I'm just disappointed I didn't ditch the husband and kids and have the incredible room and 4-poster bed all to myself!! We didn't take advantage of much as I wasn't really sure what was available (outdoor games, library etc) so would have liked more info on that. They said info was in our room but we never discovered it. I would have liked more basic menu items (eg, a bowl of fries) - as the "fancy" menu wasn't something we could feed the kids.

Clearly a special place to stay with history and charm. Good breakfast (but could have been better) and really nice afternoon tea. That said, we booked afternoon tea because of the limited options on the other menus for vegetarians.
Music in the dining room & afternoon tea lounge would have given a more relaxing ambiance. We were shown to our room on check in but a bit of information on the other rooms of interest and history of the castle would certainly have added to the experience of staying in a castle.

Everything was lovely. The room and bathroom were wonderful. All the little touches in the room made everything perfect. Breakfast every morning in the library (because we had a do) was delightful. Dinner at The Thornbury was exceptional as you would expect. Taking a walk around the grounds showed us just how stunning the castle grounds were and the care that went into them. We will be back! Thank you!
Only downside was the mattress - for us, it was just too, too soft - but I am sure some guests would love that. If you are staying a number of nights, the village of Thornbury doesn't offer a huge range of dining experiences. The Swan at Tytherington was wonderful and dog friendly.

Exceptional, Thornbury was everything i wanted it to be. It was a birthday celebration for my girlfriend and it didn't disappoint. From a telephone call to see if we were alright as we hadn't checked in early to buying a hand painted Christmas bauble. It was truly a magical stay. Staff were friendly, considerate, chatty, caring and the location was stunning. Highly recommend staying here for anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing and romantic stay. Bristol and Bath are relatively close and we popped into both. Wonderful.. 💖
There wasn't anything i didn't like...

Thornbury Castle is a mesmerizing masterpiece, where every stone-walled corridor, spiral staircase, and majestic wooden door transports you into a world of timeless grandeur. The exquisitely designed rooms and impeccably manicured gardens only add to its enchantment, while the history woven into every detail—books, art, and architecture—makes this a truly immersive experience. Though we opted for the lounge menu instead of the tasting menu, the Ham and Cheese toasties we savored were nothing short of legendary—the absolute best sandwiches we’ve ever had, no exaggeration!
