This hotel is exquisite. We booked a suite and the decor - the very tasteful blend of the modern and cave structure was very appealing. The room was extremely comfortable - I loved it! The complimentary one hour at the cave spa was very enjoyable as was the massage I had! All the staff were very professional, helpful and friendly, from the reception, housekeeping, breakfast and the restaurant. A couple of weeks before we arrived we requested advice on parking, and the staff recommended a car park in the new town which also had a transfer bus to the hotel. It proved very worthwhile for the price and we were very grateful for their suggestion. We had a wonderful taster menu meal at the restaurant one of the evenings we were there. Breakfast was excellent with a lot of choice including cooked. I had pancakes one morning and an omelette on another occasion. Really good! All in all, the hotel definitely lives up to its five star rating, it is centrally positioned in the beautiful sassi and is well worth a visit! Thank you!

We had an amazing stay at this hotel. We loved our room and facilities – an hour spent in the spa area was a lovely relief from the heat of the day and touring. I also had a massage which was amazing. The staff were also terrific and attentive and they gave us lots of help when we had difficulty finding the car park and they gave us detailed instructions and had a van waiting to take us to the hotel. The breakfast selection was also delicious and generous, and the staff were lovely. This made our stay at magical Matera all the more memorable. Thank you

The air-conditioner in our room seem to struggle with the heat a bit, but it was very hot outside!

The staff was professional, welcoming, and spoke excellent English, making communication easy for my girlfriend. We received an early check-in and a complimentary room upgrade, which was a great touch. The room was stunning, and the wellness center equally impressive, with a beautiful swimming pool and two relaxing saunas. Overall, the atmosphere and service exceeded our expectations.

The only real downside was the indoor wooden blinds in our room, which creaked throughout the night and made it hard to sleep. Another minor issue was our checkout experience. I wasn’t feeling well that morning, and while the receptionist was extremely friendly and enthusiastic, I would have preferred a more straightforward and efficient checkout process rather than an energetic discussion about things to do in Bari, our next destination. In that moment, a simple farewell and well wishes would have been more appropriate.

The location was tricky to get to, but that is not the hotel's fault. They are accessible only by foot due to the way the ancient town was built. I received excellent recommendations from the hotel about parking for our rental car. There is a secure parking building about 15 minutes walk away that cost 20 euro per day, although this is not the only option. The reception staff were excellent and organised for our luggage to be taken to our room - much appreciated considering the cobbled paths around the hotel. The room was large, quiet and well appointed. The included continental breakfast was adequate and the spa facilities were a nice addition.

The only gripe was the water from the shower easily flooded into the wider bathroom area. This could probably be managed better if you knew it would happen however.

This is one of the most unique hotels we have ever stayed in - I would highly recommend Aquatio. You are within 5 minutes walking distance to pretty much anything in Matera and 2-3 minutes walk to the fabulous restaurant Francesca (we dined there twice it was so fantastic). We also used the spa to get a couples massage and my partner used the water therapies. The front desk staff were fantastic before and during our stay - they really helped us to arrange parking, the shuttle to and from the hotel to our parking spot and other requests we had like booking restaurants for us. A true concierge experience! You will thoroughly enjoy your stay. We will be back!

Wow wow wow,this hotel is absolutely beautiful in every way. The whole place shines and gleams, my cave room was so special and it is in the perfect location within the Sassi-as a solo female traveller I was able to walk easily from my doorstep to all the tourist attractions. The service is excellent-room seemed to be turned down 3 times a day. Spa was gorgeous, as were my treatments. Matera is the most beautiful place to stay and explore,a real hidden gem.

Housekeeping staff ignored the fact it was 22:30 at night,I was a lone female traveller and the room opened onto the street-they still knocked on my door asking if I needed towels etc-this was quite disconcerting at night as it could have been anyone knocking,plus I was in bed. They also woke me up by knocking even with the do not disturb sign on the door. Cost of taxi from bus stop to hotel was a lot-was charged €15 on arrival but then €20 on departure by taxi driver-think he ripped me off. Also the restaurant is overpriced so only ate there once-€22 for a tiny tiny mushroom dish wish did not fill me up. I think a one hour free spa slot is too short also,it would be nice for guests to have longer than this included in the price.

Lovely cave room. Enjoyed the spa - better than expected. Staff were really lovely and very helpful with good restaurant recommendations and interesting facts about the hotels. Ask to see the Cistern filling. Hotel has been sympathetically restored and rooms were well fitted out. Security is good. Rooms are laid out over several areas (the nature of the caves) and there will be steps. Car parking recommended was difficult to find (carparks issue, not hotel - it is on opposite side of road).

Breakfast was in a small room (we are in caves) so recommend getting there earlier. Have seen bigger choices but the pastries were really good.

We loved the luxury feel of the hotel and it was an amazing base for a few days to explore Matera. The staff were exceptional, especially Dino and Mary. Breakfast was superb. The spa was stunning. To stay in a cave hotel was really unique and this one was so beautifully designed. Thanks for a great stay.

There weren’t many improvements that we’d suggest. We found the bathroom arrangements quite strange - not much privacy between bed and bathroom facilities- even just a curtain would have been an improvement. While we understand why it’s done like this, it seemed a shane that we were limited to 1 included spa visit per stay - on the day that we visited, we were the only people in there.

It’s one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed. Breakfast & dinner were included. The service was top notch. The staff were very friendly. The facility is so clean. The indoor pool was awesome. I love everything about this cave hotel. Elevator is also available.

The footpath surface doesn’t help because I traveled with a suitcase. It’s difficult to drag the suitcase around. It’s way better to arrive the cave hotel by taxi. I didn’t rent a car, but arrived Matera by bus & walk to the hotel.

Stunning bedroom (we were in a suite…. not cheap but very impressive and unlike anywhere else we have stayed). Super location for a trip to Matera. You are in the heart of everything. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive.

I loved everything about it but just so you know…..you do not need a car here but if you have one, you cannot park at the hotel. Be sure to make arrangements for parking and a shuttle to the hotel as it’s not easy to drag your luggage around.
