What a fabulous hotel in such a spectacular city. We absolutely loved our stay here, staff were friendly and helpful, our room was gorgeous, very spacious with a lovely comfortable bed and plenty of storage space, even a safe. Bathroom worked well and nice fluffy towels. A small fridge, kettle, tea and coffee supplies were included. Breakfast was an absolute highlight, a good selection and what a view from the terrace. Totally recommend! Matera is a beautiful place and having such comfortable accommodation made our experience so enjoyable.

You have to expect lots of stairs, but it's part of the charm of Matera.

This is a lovely cave property, that's been comfortably renovated. As a late addition, we had our son join us - but the room was plenty big enough to accommodate 3 of us - and the staff and hotel were very happy to make this arrangement for us. Antonella contacted us well in advance to give us clear instructions on parking options, and give suggestions of tours and restaurants to book in advance. All this made the stay more seamless and pleasant and we got to tick off a lot in a short space of time. The breakfast is amazing - with heaps of options, and a stunning view over the Sassi.

During our recent extensive travels, we have stayed in some lovely accommodation, but we all agreed this hotel went straight to the top of the list. From the clear and helpful advance advice about parking (and the recommended shuttle to the hotel from the safe parking area), to the warm and Informative welcome from the wonderful Cristina, to the incredible rooms and mind blowing-view, this hotel could not be any better. We occupied one cave ‘deluxe junior suite’ (with the most incredible bathroom), and a beautiful deluxe suite next to reception. They were both different and both exceptional, with extremely comfortable beds, great air conditioning, fantastic showers etc. We loved hearing from Cristina about the history of the rooms and the hotel, and the history of Matera. We enjoyed a drink on the Terrace before following Cristina’s recommendations for good dishes to eat in the Sassi for dinner. A comfortable sleep was followed by a truly delicious and varied breakfast. I can’t speak highly enough of this hotel; our genuine regret was that we stayed only one night. Will definitely be back!

Staying only one night. Matera deserves at least two nights.

The accomodation was well furnished and scrupulously clean. Bed linen and towels were of a very high quality and we appreciated the provision of slippers and dressing gowns. Reception staff were very personable, very helpful and keen to make our stay successful. The location was excellent - overall a fabulous experience.

We thought the bed seemed slightly damp but this could be a consequence of a refurbished cave. Drink making facilities could have been bettered i.e. providing milk and water, and replacing tea sachets that had been used. A warm welcome by the breakfast team would have been appreciated.

Staff were very helpful, at any time (I got lost after dinner and the owner was helping me find my way at 11pm via WhatsApp) - there’s a lift!

- the reception area (including lift) is closed at night/early morning, so it means you need to find the back entrance to the hotel to come/leave. Not easy in the dark or with luggage. - the terrace outside my room was shared with the bar/restaurant and so no privacy if sitting outside your room. - I couldn’t get a table to enjoy the view from the bar/terrace at sunset because it was full. Maybe worth giving priority to hotel guests before visitors

The fabulous breakfast was served on an outdoor patio overlooking the Sassi. The patio outside our room overlooked the Sassi. The room was gorgeously appointed with a 20-foot ceiling, windows everywhere, and one of the most beautifully furnished rooms I've ever experienced. The hostess was even better than all this put together. She was so attentive to all our needs, booking and changing activities for us, recommending where to eat, and even running upstairs to get my husband a Coca Cola Zero. If I ever return to Matera, this is where I would stay. Its location is perfect. If I could give it six smiley faces I would.

This hotel in this city was one of the most spectacular places I have ever been! From the very beginning to the last moment, the staff were exceptionally helpful and so friendly! The cave room was just what we were looking for and it definitely exceeded our expectations! It had a very high end feel with a great historical story to tell. All that, and cozy too! The view outside our room on the terrace was breathtaking! We were close to the bistro and breakfast was included. Great food! Awesome and friendly servers! I will definitely be going back next year for an extended stay. Thank you guys, so much, for such a memorable vacation!

We were completely delighted with our stay in Matera!This boutique hotel was everything we could have wanted. The location was perfect, beautifully decorated and very clean. It was very authentic carved in a cave and close to everything. The view was magnificent! Christina was a great host and made us feel so comfortable The breakfast is freshly made to order with a variety of healthy choices. What stood out for us was the extremely kind and courteous hospitality. The staff went out of their way to help us with anything we needed. We will surely be back, you will not be disappointed!!

We loved everything about it!

From the moment we stepped into the "Sassi" suite at Palazzo Degli Abati, it was clear that this was going to be an unforgettable experience. The suite itself exudes a romantic charm that is perfect for couples, with its spacious layout carved directly into the ancient rocks of Matera. The ambiance is beautifully complemented by a soothing bathroom, featuring a giant walk-in shower and a luxurious bath that beckons for relaxing moments together. Waking up and stepping out of the room, we were greeted by a breathtaking view that can only be described as the very best of Matera. The panoramic vistas from our suite-terrace were uniquely spectacular, making every moment feel like a postcard come to life. The terrace of the suite provided the perfect sanctuary for both morning delights and evening aperitifs. Enjoying breakfast while soaking in the serene views was an absolute joy, and sipping drinks in the evening amidst the ancient city’s glow was equally magical. A special note must be made about the wonderful staff at Palazzo Degli Abati. Cristina and her colleagues were exceptionally accommodating and attentive to all our needs. Their dedication shone brightly when we expressed a desire to have some photos taken to remember our trip. They went above and beyond to arrange an excellent photographer, Simone, who captured our moments beautifully. In conclusion, our stay at Palazzo Degli Abati was nothing short of spectacular. The suite, the views, the service, and the overall ambiance were all perfect. This is a must-visit place that offers a piece of heaven in Matera, ideal for those looking to indulge in a slice of romance and tranquility.

This hotel was absolutely beautiful, offering the most incredible view of Matera! Their rooftop restaurant, where we enjoyed a complimentary breakfast, was a highlight. You can take in the iconic view of the city from a high point without the crowds—such a special experience! The staff was truly exceptional. We had to check out very early, and they thoughtfully prepared breakfast and lunch for us the night before, making us feel like part of the family with this personal gesture. The rooms were spacious and beautifully designed, with thoughtful touches like complimentary toiletry kits, slippers, and everything we could need for a comfortable stay. If I could, I'd give this place a 20 out of 10!
