We asked for a upper floor room with a view and that’s exactly what we got, the room was a odd shape due to it being in the roof but we liked it, the bed was comfortable, tea making facilities were good. Breakfast was good and well organised, plenty off choice but the sausages were not the best (very very dry)

Swimming pool was freezing cold to the point that my wife couldn’t get in. We found the prices for evening meals a bit high so we ate else were

Staff were so friendly. Especially reception who sorted out a room move for me. Views are incredible. Good quality items at buffet breakfast. Fish and chips were superb. A nice pint of Theakstons!

Room 108 was a bit jaded. Moved to 215 which was much nicer. TV problems! Limited number of channels. This is throughout hotel! New owners I'm told will be changing them. A member of staff told me they only cost £15 each and they have loads of problems! Electrics in both rooms were poor . Ist room had 4 lights out, second room when I put bedside light on it blew! The hotel is going through a big improvement programme and will be wonderful when finished this summer.

Loved the location. Best views of any hotel I've stayed at, just breathtaking. Close to the cinder path and Cleveland way. The new refurbishments in the hotel look really fabulous, so far, loved the reception and restaurant/bar area. Food was excellent, had evening meal which was outstanding and breakfast was very good. Staff were very nice, polite and so smartly dressed. Loved the fact that the hotel is dog friendly.

The ladies toilets downstairs had an unpleasant smell. Our reading lamp in the bedroom was loose and spun round. Very limited complimentary tea and coffee on offer in the room, one packet of biscuits is a bit stingy.

The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. When we left, we were warned about the slippery road after the overnight snow.My wife and I lived in a 2-bed apartment. a room with a sea view for 3 nights in January. It was incredibly warm and cozy. Every morning we stayed at the window for a long time and admired the landscape outside the window. It's unforgettable!

I'm not a prude and I understand what 3 stars are. If you invest a lot of money in the renovation of this hotel, you can probably get a 5+ hotel. But we see a bathroom made of plastic, with very little space to accommodate shaving accessories, showers, and other things...Poor sound insulation (neighbors can be heard from time to time).

Fabulous location for a gig at the open air theatre - only a 20 min drive down into town. The panoramic views are stunning, and the gardens are lovely. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the beds are mega comfy. The buffet style breakfast was plentiful and hot - nice touch to have the tea, coffee & toast brought to the table. Overall, it's a great, historic place to stay. We'll definitely be coming back.

We booked the hotel specifically because it had a pool. Sadly, the new owner has decided not to keep the pool open and we weren't notified in advance of this change, and my bad, I didn't check before the free cancellation date expired, but we know now!

The hotel was amazing. View from the room priceless. I could stay there for hours enjoying coffee or tea. Amazing garden, beautiful place to walk. What impressed me the most was the bible in the room. I love the message that the hotel shares with books like that. Food was fantastic as well. I'm definitely going there again.

The only thing which I cannot say that I didn't like but could be better is check in and check out times, so check in is 15:00 and check ot 10:30 which is a bit early. Most of the hotels at which I've been, check out time was 12:00. This could be improved. But the rest of it was bang on..

Beautiful views of the bay especially from the dining area and our double aspect bedroom. A lovely old building which is very comfortable, gardens are lovely too. Food was absolutely fabulous and really well presented.

Although comfortable a lot of areas especially the communal areas are very dark and dreary which makes it feel a bit soulless tired and in need of updating! staff seemed unhappy just slothing about doing what seems like the bare minimum. One member of staff in particular loudly voicing how he felt about other staff and how little he thinks they do…(because he does everything!) and using language that should not be heard by any guests EVER!

Lovely old hotel, full of charm and in a great location with fantastic views across the sea to Robin Hood Bay. Food excellent in the restaurant and room was specious with a great sea view. Hotel is undergoing modernisation and it does look tired in places but very happy with the value for money in our room. Staff very helpful and everything was clean. Didn’t notice much noise from the workmen on site.

Only small things such as the odd light not working or bath plug missing but nothing that can’t be fixed as the new owners upgrade the hotel

Location of this property is absolutely stunning. Atop the hill at Ravenscar looking directly towards Robin Hoods Bay. Not sure you’ll find a hotel with better views than this. The hotel is in the process of being renovated and does show signs of its age. In our view the price reflected this so didn’t have an issue with this.

Hotel is clearly undergoing renovations, which is clear to see from other reviews and highlighted by the hotel itself. There wasn’t any work ongoing at the time of our visit but clear to see where areas have been prepared for further work.

We have stayed here on many occasions and hoped it would be as good under new ownership. We thought the outside of the hotel looked well kept and the restaurant menu had excellent choices. The biggest plus for us was that we could take our 2 dogs and they were welcome in all areas. There were many dogs staying and all were well behaved. The staff were helpful and our room was comfortable.

It is obvious that the hotel needs some maintenance inside and I hope it is done sympathetically and in keeping with its age and style. However I have my doubts when I heard that it is to be renamed Grand Villa Heights. I cannot think of a more dreary corporate name - a sentiment shared by many friends who have also stayed at Raven Hall many times. The emphasis seemed to be focused on it being a wedding venue with the front lounge dominated by posters and a TV screen advertising this.
