My room was very spacious and the bed was especially comfortable--and I'm "picky" about mattresses. It was nice to have a desk so I could work more easily on my computer in the mornings. The hotel is located close to numerous places to eat and shop and several city attractions. Reception staff was very receptive to questions and helpful in recommending places to eat that weren't too far away (I was dealing with tendinitis in a foot) and helping me chart the quickest routes to places I wanted to see. Breakfast included numerous choices of protein, fruit, cereals, and breads as well as tea, coffee, and juices. It was especially nice when I was tired to be able to simply cross the street to Tarte de Julie for lunch on two occasions and have their excellent quiches and salads.

While the problem was quickly solved, I'm shorter than average, and the safe in my room was considerably higher than I could reach. When I reported this to reception, they put my camera and passport in their safe and called a staff member who came later that morning to relocate the safe at a height I could manage :-). As a person with allergies, I found the honey-scented shower products way too strong for me, though I'm sure others enjoyed them. It would nice if the hotel had some unscented products such as bar soap available for people with allergies.

The 'welcome' or 'accueil' was one of the best we have ever encountered. Laetitia (sp?) and then the next day Laure were outstanding. They should teach hotel school. They made every effort to help us with our stay, parking, places to visit, logistics with leaving luggage and car for additional hours, extremely clear parking instructions, and all with a smile and good will. I cannot say enough good things. The hotel is located in the center of old town Bayonne, walking distance to everything. So stash your car in the parking garage and walk everywhere. Despite the central location, our room was absolutely quiet. Wonderful!

The TL;DR here is that the staff are friendly and helpful, the breakfast is excellent, the location is absolutely outstanding, and the rooms are nice but a bit tight. It appears that various tours know about this hotel, and will book their people into it, or take advantage of the great continental breakfast. The old-school elevator is kind of fun. Our room had a view of the cathedral, which I really enjoyed.

The refrigerator barely worked, but the staff did try to fix it for us. I also broke a light bulb accidentally, and it was fixed immediately with no charge.

The hotel feels a little old-fashioned but it’s smart, everything works well, so great to stay in a traditional hotel that does not try to be like all the others. We loved the old lift.

TERRIBLE - paper cups for use in the bedroom and bathroom - HORRIBLE! We queried at reception and it is apparently Accor Hotel Group policy, a ‘green’ policy, to avoid using plastic. Why? A paper cup full of water, on the bedside table, goes soft - trying picking that up in the dark! These cups were changed daily, what a waste. What’s wrong with glass? The breakfast was not the best. Hot options comprised just scrambled eggs (which looked unpleasant one morning) and bacon. Each morning there were a few small glasses half-filled with freshly squeezed orange juice that had separated out, otherwise it was long life fruit juices that tasted as long life juices do. The selection of cheese and charcuterie was minimal, though small patisseries were good. Good coffee

The location of this hotel is excellent for walking to all the sites. Lots of shops, restaurants and cafes/ bars nearby. If you arrive by car it is difficult to get to as a lot of roads are no entry. I recommend you get clear directions from the hotel in advance. Charming old hotel. Lovely large room and bathroom but bathroom could benefit from converting to a walk in shower. Breakfast good

Room cold as heating wasn’t activated. After asking twice at reception this was resolved successfully. A lot of dust on floor behind pipe by toilet on the floor which could be cleaned by hoover attachment, otherwise the room was very clean.

location and staff were excellent. the hotel shows it’s age. my room was fine and most importantly the bed was very very comfortable and that mattered alot. the breakfast room was very nice and a decent enough buffet spread.

the carpets were dingy and worn as were the upholstery on the couch and chairs in my room but this would not necessarily prevent me from returning.

Laetitia at reception was tremendously kind and helpful. What a lovely person. After we arrived, we saw some other guests being demanding and difficult; she remained professional, kind and courteous despite their unreasonableness. I hope the hotel recognise what a treasure Laetitia is.

The bed of the first room we saw was rather small.

The receptionist was very nice, friendly and very helpful. The hotel is conveniently located. It is quiet. The rooms are quite large and very comfortable. The breakfast is supposed to be very good but due to our long flight we over slept and missed it. For our first time in France, it was perfect.

I absolutely love the breakfast at Le Grand Hotel. I've been coming here for over 15 years, and it has become like a second home. Better than a second home, in fact, because of the breakfast. The floors may be slanted and the elevator is a sight to see. The fact that it is right in the center and steps away from the walkable shopping district, the cathedral and the farmer's market all add to the charm.

Location was excellent. Parking (off-site) was appreciated. Air conditioning worked well. Large bathroom with a big shower and good water pressure. Loved the classic old elevator. Bar area was very nice. Lots of storage for a small room.

It's a classic old hotel so be prepared for a small room (we had the largest room). TV was old...no way to hook up a computer and no availability of Netflix, Amazon, etc.
