staff at the reception are so professional and welcoming. view is unbeatable, spacious room with beautiful building.

One staff member in the breakfast kitchen unfortunately disrupted the serene atmosphere the hotel worked hard to create. While calm music played and the ambiance was designed to be relaxing, this one woman was exceptionally loud, repeatedly yelling in Portuguese without regard for the guests' experience. Unlike the other attentive and courteous staff, she didn’t greet guests and instead engaged in nonstop, loud chatter from the kitchen. It’s a real shame that her behavior diminished the team’s otherwise excellent efforts to create a peaceful dining experience.

Beautiful character building. Yes it’s old, but that’s the whole point. It’s huge inside & just lovely. If you want 5 star clean, stark, no character then this is not for you. The staff were great. Really friendly, very helpful. Cleaners are exceptional. The room was on the 3rd floor but ground floor street level. It was massive! High ceiling! Loved it. Made such a change from these shoebox rooms you get elsewhere. Had good aircon, a massive bathroom & a lovely terrace with table, chairs & a parasol. Easy access to the lake front & walkway. Nice quiet area, you can easily walk in to the main centre of Montreux or get the number 204. Went to a really authentic Italian restaurant called La Fontaine. Highly recommend it. Bit pricey but it is Montreux and I loved the room. Would definitely stay again.

Spacious room with air conditioning unit, small balcony, black-out metal shutter for nighttime, and a lovely view of the lake. Good-sized bathroom. Wide corridors, beautiful sitting room and public areas downstairs. Breakfast tables overlooking lake and good breakfast buffet. Welcoming staff at reception and at breakfast. Hotel lift went down to lake level for excellent lakeside walks.

A little out of town, though there was a local bus every 10 minutes that ran as far as Vevey, and in cooler weather it would have been fine to walk. Air conditioning unit in room was very noisy and had bright blue light that made it hard to sleep. Semi-hospital atmosphere with seemingly convalescent patients from hotel clinic in nearby rooms and nursing staff moving monitors around. Fridge turned off to save electricity and no tea or coffee making facilities in rooms. Dinner waiter gave guests arriving without reservations a hard time despite plenty of empty tables in restaurant. Poor quality coffee at breakfast. Maintenance issues - plumbing and somewhat battered room furniture.

We loved our stay there, the staff were extremely friendly and we communicated everything just well in english. The hotel is pretty old but still in good shape so that didn’t bother us. The room was clean and comfortable. If you are worried about the parking situation in the city keep in mind that you can always park in front of the hotel behind the white lines. You can ask the staff at the reception for a blue clock to put in your windshield, you can stay parked there for 3 hours but you can always change the clock and still remain parked there. If you decide to be away for the whole day ask the staff for a whole day parking ticket which will allow you to leave your car there without changing the blue block, it was only 10 CHF for a day. You got free pool access and an amazing view no matter which room you stay in. You can also always get the breakfast in the morning which had a very big variety like gluten free, vegetarian.. One tip I would give you is if you need more neck support maybe take a tiny pillow from home but that’s about it. Overall it was a very pleasant experience.

We booked a double deluxe room with balcony and oh my word, I did a little happy dance as we opened the door and saw the view from the balcony. Absolutely stunning view of the lake from floor 3. Room was spacious with air conditioning (v welcome in 30 degree heat). Bathroom was modern and clean, the room itself did look a little dated but we knew this from previous reviews and it didn't bother us at all. Would have liked a second pillow but managed with just the one. We used the pool, which is a bit complicated to get to so definitely ask at reception for directions first. The hotel is right on the lake so there's a lovely walk on the doorstep. We visited the Queen museum and realised that we could see Freddie Mercury's penthouse from our balcony as it was only a couple of doors away, so as Queen fans, that was a little exciting! Walk from Montreux station was about 20 minutes, mostly downhill but this obviously means lugging cases uphill when leaving. We opted to get a taxi which cost 14.80 francs (note it would have been 11.80 if we'd paid in cash) but so worth it in 30 degree heat, there is a bus stop outside too. Train network is super easy and efficient. and depending on how far you go, is covered by the Riviera card (ask for this at reception). We didn't eat or get drinks at the hotel so can't comment on that. We visited Lausanne for the day which was only a short train ride away and most of the journey was covered by the Riviera card. Super hotel with friendly and helpful staff, would definitely stay here again.

No kettle in the room (vital for Brits who need their morning brew!). Instructions for the aircon unit would have come in handy as it seemed to have a mind of its own! The hotel kept messaging me through booking.com asking me to complete a pre check in questionnaire but booking.com remove the links so it is impossible to complete. I did message the property a few times to ask them to email the questionnaire directly but didn't receive anything. All was fine on check in anyway.

The view from the balcony was incredible and made this trip exceptional, the staff were lovely and so helpful. The swimming pool is amazing, lovely comfortable hotel, ten minute walk up to the town with shops and restaurants or you can take the bus free with card provided by hotel. Short distance to the train station for golden pass train and ferry port for the cruise around the area.

The interior of rooms is old style, that is part of the charm of the hotel. There are not tea and coffee facilities in room but coffee in the lobby and a lovely bar with piano playing.

The view from the balcony is fantastic

Bathroom very clean but outdated, looked like a hospital. Carpet in lobbies and furniture in breakfast room should be washed, lots of stains.

Hotel du Grand Lac Excelsior opens onto the lake. You can sit on the beautiful balcony of your oom overlooking the lake, and when you are too hot, take the elevator to the groundfloor in your costume, and within 15 meters you are in the lake. So as far is location this is amazing. It’s also a little bit away from the center but with free bus rides anywhere in the region and bus stop 200 meters from the hotel, it’s perfect. There were a few notes I would like to add, for a 4 star hotel, I would expect a good quality mattress. I had back ache after 3 nights with a very concave mattress in the room sadly, but I did not feel like I wanted to complain and spoil my own time, so I endured it. Minor issues in our room, basin did not drain quickly. Shower head kept flopping so you had to hold it up to get the shower on your head. These can be fixed easily. Each room has aircon but the aircon machine is outside on the balcony and this is noisy. For first 2 nights I could not understand the loud humming sound outside our room even though the lake appeared so still and quiet. I then discovered it was the neighbouring room aircon, as we had not used our room aircon yet. I’m not sure how this could be upgraded but it was a bit disturbing. There were also people smoking on the balcony in rooms below us and the smoke filtered into the room whilst we were trying to sleep. I tried to call reception but could not get through, might be my user error on my part. We absolutely loved our stay here though. The breakfast was a lovely spread, options for vegetarian and vegan. I would not return if the beds had not been upgraded, but if they were upgraded, I would return in a flash. The location is truly spectacular.

It’s a lovely, old hotel just by the lake. The night we stayed was good value for money and we appreciated being able to upgrade to a larger room with a balcony view. So even though we arrived late and left early, we were able to enjoy a glass of wine on the balcony. I’d love to have stayed longer and tried out the pool and other facilities, so I’ll need to come back. It’s a good hotel for those who are travelling light and like walking and getting around the area, as it’s close enough to the station.

It’s an older hotel and I liked the sense of history.

We had a fantastic stay at Hôtel du Grand Lac Excelsior. The first thing that struck us was how helpful and friendly the staff were, nothing was too much trouble for them. The hotel itself was clean, there were areas that possibly could be updated, like the carpets in the corridors, but I'm being picky there really, because it didn't affect our stay, and the overall decoration of the hotel was beautiful. We stayed in a suite and it was perfect for our family of four, it was comfortable, with two bathrooms, a sliding door onto the garden, and It was very cosy. The location is the real drawing point, eating breakfast at a window with views of Lac Léman and mountains was breathtaking, I've never had such a beautiful view when eating before. My 5 year old daughter said it was the 'best day of her life'! High praise from this family!

The only thing that disappointed us was leaving!
